That's what's great about Cold Chisel - they can do anything - ballads, rock and everything in between. They are not a 'same-same' band. You never know what they'll come up with next. Some great ballads - 'Water into Wine' & 'Breakfast at Sweethearts' & Mossy singing 'Georgia' is out of this world good.

Like what you’re saying, but the fault isn’t with the government. The Department of Defense - why do you reckon the previous govt filled the portfolio with ineffectual women they didn’t really want. Those guys are powerful and have their fingers in a lot of pies - they’ve been enabled by their home party, LNP, to do as they wish to keep a clean sheet and encourage youngsters to lye on it. They ark up when they get a Labor govt. and talk a lot of shit about them.

Both these boys are more than capable alone and in combination of giving you a ballad that’ll give you goosebumps or a rock song that’ll have you head banging. Jimmy may have been a backup singer in this but he certainly showed off his vocal range belting and falsetto.. look forward to the rest of the week!

The whole of Circus Animals was superb, a fantastic album. There’s no way Jimmy can be expected to be able to sing at his best for decades, and most live stuff I see of his, especially from later years, you can tell that he’s lost some of the nuance whilst trying to belt out those incredible notes, but you still have to take your hat off to him. Do yourself a favour and have a listen to the studio version as well, it’s absolutely golden. Nice start to the week! Looking forward to the coming days!

Totally agree! These songs were written and performed in the late 70's and early early 80's and should be heard from then. Everything else performed afterwards when they regroup is just gravy.

The Drummer Steve Prestwich wrote this. Not only did they have two great singers everyone in the Band wrote great songs. Their Last album, 20th Century, before they split in the 70s was a great Album too. Underrated a bit by the critics but not the fans.

Must be an oversight. While it was initially saddening when the song got blocked, cutting Aussie Week Three down to just four tracks, the upside is that it has given us a special reminder of the type of talent we can look forward to in the upcoming Aussie Week Four. I've heard When the War is Over many, many times, but never that version. It's just stunning. It probably hits a little differently when one has served as I have, but I'm certain it is none-the-less relatable to myriad circumstance. Musically, this version is a cut above. Vocally, if you get to hear John Farnham's cover, prepare to have your socks blown off. And if you happen to see this comment before watching Farnsey again - you mentioned his range and I did some research into this: it's near on three octaves. He's been recorded from A2 to G5. Belting. Without falsetto. Love your work, fellas.

Ian Moss/Jimmy Barnes, Chisel is probably the only band along with Queen that had 2 genuine front man quality singers who could harmonise like crazy and bring the best out of each other. Plus, these lyrics are crazy good. Whether it the album or a live version, it doesn't matter, it's always the same. Mossy brings this haunting resignation to Prestwidge's words, and Jimmy brings the pain.

Its written about the breakup of a marriage but I believe songs take on their own meaning over time, and so the common belief this is about a returning soldier and his nervous anticipation back to a normal life makes sense...

Great song. A lot of debate has been had about the meaning, from coming back broken from a war, a marriage breakup or even coming home from gaol. All fit beautifully. You know you have a great band when the drummer comes up with a song as good as that. Nice to see him side by side with Mossy at the front of the stage. The also brilliant Bass player Phil Small can't be left out as he wrote one of their biggest hits 'My baby' sung by Moss. If you are gonna write a song for Chisel it better be good. Nice 80's sax in it too by Jo Camilleri (another legend from Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons).

Grew up in the '70's watching all the Pommy classics on our Aussie 'BBC' channel....the 'ABC' with my granparents. The 2 Ronnie's,Dad's Army,Dave Allen,'Carry on',It ain't half hot mum,Danger mouse,Monty Python,Yes Minister,Man about the house,some mother's do have 'em,Dr Who,The Goodies,Sir David Attenborough,Minder,On the buses,Steptoe and son,Porridge,Open all hours,Robin's nest,and on and on!. The Thames intro began all of them right through '80's as well!👍 Have never been to London. Seems to be a few muppets here that somehow think Farnham’s performance of this song is somehow ‘better’. It isn’t. As good as he is he cannot match the strange marriage of voices that is Mossy & Barnes. As good as he is, his version is just a vocal extravaganza, and lacks any of the raw pain and emotion conveyed here. It’s not about a literal war either, it’s about the end of a relationship and moving on.

All 3 recorded 80’s versions are equally brilliant Ian Moss brings so much soul to original. * The original Chisel classic * The Little River Band version underrated brilliant . The songs songwriter Steve Prestwich even playing drums for LRB at this moment in time in 1985 . John Farnham’s vocals are at his strongest also that this moment LRB’s harmonies are pitch perfect . * John Farnham’s solo version more stripped back than the his LRB version but still a great interpretation with so much emotional deliverance .

@@kane29842 The thing about pieces of art, is that different people can derive different meaning from it depending on their personal perspective. Just because the songwriter and/or performer had a particular thought in mind does not mean the listener must also have that perception for them to be correct. It's art. Not an entrance exam. Imaginary Girl by Hunters and Collectors is that way for me. I have a very personal perception of that song which is far different from what the Hunters have said about it. Doesn't make me 'wrong' or 'incorrect'.

When a war has gone on long enough, and a soldier is coming to the end of his tour of duty, he spends time in thought on how he can possibly avoid being injured or dying, before he can get to go home. Then he will have to find a place to heal himself of all the scars, visible or not. He is also thinking no-one will really "get" him after what he has seen and been through. All the best.

This is the greatest love song. Most love songs are about new couples. This is an older couple who have gotten to know all their partner's nuances and bad foibles and they're still there. Cold Chisel version is awesome . But John Farnham takes When The War Is Over to different level. The real reason John Farnham sings When The War Is Over after Cold Chisel originally broke up in 1984 drummer and this songs songwriter Steve Prestwich straight out Cold Chisel joined the Little River Band another classic Australian band . John Farnham was lead singer of the Little River Band at that time . Steve Prestwich didn’t have any new song to contribute for LRB so LRB started to perform When The War Is Over on tour in 1985 . LRB recorded it for the underrated No Reins album in 1986 just before Steve Prestwich and John Farnham left the band . John Farnham recorded When The War Is Over again as a solo artist as an b side for his hit song Age Of Reason 1988 that version is also a bonus track CD version of Age Of Reason album . this is my favourite Chisel song, I love the line....How can I get home and not get blown away...chills, I'm sending your reaction to Jimmy's and Mossy's management. Why they weren't a massive hit in the rest of the world I will never know, However they are still as brilliant live today as they were way back in the beginning so never say never I guess

We always knew that we had world class acts, they were just not well known overseas. Nice to see them getting some recognition outside of Oz, finally. Better late than never. Midnight Oil Cold Chisel Hunters and Collectors Divinyls Inxs Angels (and I guess ACDC) to name but a few world class Australian acts

@@TheThamesmen Wow! Video posted a year ago and still responding to messages. That's dedication! I love the appreciation that you guys have for Australian music, and of course music in general. There are a lot of great singers, and great musicians, but they don't necessarily write good songs. Weddings Parties Anything is another great Aussie band. Basically folk-rock, lots of ballads, but when they rock, they rock. Unfortunately, not a lot of good live footage of them. Written by drummer Steve Prestwich, who died about 7-8 years ago....not sure, my memory for time isn't great, could be more recent. A Liverpudlian by birth, Prestwich wrote a few songs, including the beautiful "Forever Now." Most Chisel tracks were written, or at least part written by keyboardist Don Walker, a brilliant songwriter.
