in my experience serious wind, say 50mph, will strip off gooseberry flowers and fruit.

I meant to mention that I thought there would be branch damage with high winds and a combination of heavy fruit set! Another good reason to trellis these great plants! Are you saying the wind will strip the leaves and fruit itself? I imagine that's possible! They are heavy berries!
