Amazing review brother, very thorough. Super glad Stan was able to send you some of his amazing citrus, I wanted to tell you i agree with the dunstan being better than store bought grapefruit and i don’t care much for store grapefruit either. I agree The dunstan and us852 are definitely winners and should be in every back yard 🍊🍋 the citremon belongs in a grocery store for sure

Thanks a lot! Stan really is super generous with his offerings and pricing, I'm happy I got to meet him this Summer finally. That's interesting that you agree about the Dunstan! I knew once my wife liked it for fresh eating that it was a winner - she hates grapefruit! I think US-852 and it's offspring have a lot of potential. It's already a great juicing fruit and I believe we could eventually get one or more F2 plants that produce fruit which are even more acceptable for fresh eating!

@@themulberries absolutely, just growing out lots of seedlings you could find one that has mutations that are better, larger leaves, larger fruit, increased sweet, etc. I’m super excited all the new varieties and variations that will be coming over the next few years. I should have some fruit from a US852 seedling F2 in the next few days to do a taste test review between the 2. Looking forward to seeing if there is a difference

@@toughcitrus can't wait to watch that one! I have an F2 Tai Tri seedling from Virginia Fruit Grower which has signs of polyploidy. This could have an interesting effect on its hardiness/fruit as well as possibly creating a seedless hybrid if I cross it with another diploid hardy citrus in the future.

I think it's best to think of these "cold-hardy citrus" as analogous to peppers. You're not gonna eat a habanero raw... You experience the flavor best, by diluting it to a smaller proportion within a sauce. Similarly, these "bitter, sour" etc fruits can still be a decent beverage flavor, or be mixed in moderation to a salad or pie.

This is a good point! Just because they are sour or bitter does not make them inedible, they actually provide a lot of complex flavors and aromas which can be complimentary in many dishes and drinks. In a colder growing zone I much rather have these than no citrus at all! They also seem to grow effortlessly in zones 7/8.

I got a few live plants from you a little while ago. Sacaton and Dunstan Citrumelo. They're doing quite well for Northern Michigan (6b)! I also grabbed a few seeds from @toughcitrus, who also sent me some C-35 seeds as a bonus. It'll be fun to see what survives the tundra.

@@LobotomyTC That's awesome you got those from us! Our Dunstan was a limited batch too. Super cool you're growing them in a colder zone! I'm hoping in the future we can provide more, hardier varieties for our zone 6 friends to experiment with.

@@themulberries ah, my mistake, I actually got Swingle and Sacaton from you. I ordered Dunstan seeds from TC. I feel like all I need now are some true citrus as indoor plants, and we might see an interesting extra few varieties in the world!

@@LobotomyTC I can definitely recommend Calamondin as an indoor plant, it's been our least susceptible to spider mites and stresses of indoor growing in general. A lot of the other quats can do well too but for some reason Calamondin has been the healthiest for us.

Great video on the topic. I found in tasting the Dunstan to have much more of a grapefruit bitterness than the others I compared it to. More like a grapefruit and not so much like a slightly bitter lemon substitute like swingle. The fact that these are 50/50 means the possibility for great tasting cold hardy 1/4 trifoliate hybrids is very attainable!
@themulberries
@themulberries 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! I've heard Swingle is more lemon-like and look forward to trying it one day. I agree! They're already pretty good for how hardy they are, so I have plans to cross the best of them with a tetraploid Tai Tri to hopefully obtain high quality, seedless, 1/4 trifoliate hybrids.

Thanks G! I'm excited to make more videos on this topic - both growing and reviewing these fruit. I appreciate the feedback! I thought the trifoliate influence might be a good addition because it gives another metric for describing these fruits to people who haven't had them yet.

Juice was decent, quite sour, but it made a nice citrus-aide when mixed with water and sugar! The rind still had some funkiness…but I prefer the juice anyway. Definitely worth having. I just put some seeds in ziplock to sprout…hopefully some take. Good luck with yours!

@@quinnmores1007 Glad you liked the citrus-ade! A lot of these hybrids are quite sour indeed, and the rinds tend to be too funky/bitter to use. I made an "orange" syrup out of the US-852 rinds which was good and slightly bitter. Good luck with your seeds too!
