The outside temperature had been getting down to 5*f at night and a mix of rain then snow hit the area. The kitchen area has been cold in the morning but warmed up once the ovens were running. What could possible go wrong?

I made this video about a year ago and since that time this package unit has been replaced and so has the regulator. As I said in the video I had to get the thing running or leave them without heat. This is kind of hackery, but that’s what it is and that’s what I had to do to make her run.

@@gekkedirkie because I ended up adding some expanda foam on top of it for extra insulation, which looked like crap, but I cut that out and regretted doing it. I couldn’t remember at the time whether or not that was in the video

Great Job Rick. Just did the same thing last week on a ground mounted package unit. Stopped by a couple days later and was still working fine. Told the manager that it wasn’t the prettiest fix, she said said I don’t care cause it’s still warm inside the store. Have fun at AHR.

I had to put one of those silver tube combustion motors for a mobile home in a customers oven to warm it up enough to get it to turn. It froze in my van. Sustained -30 degree temperatures you have to "get a little western" out here in rural WY. Thanks for the video/trick and God bless

We just use a torch to thaw the regulator, probably not recommended but don't always have access to hot water on the roof. Of course we go back and replace it.

good catch, probably going to have to replace that regulator but great job for temp fix to get them going. I know some techs would have just said sorry, but regulator is bad going to have to order one. you Sir are one great trouble shooter and Tech. It’s very common in my area that people have natural gas from an actual well in the rural areas and lots of times their water seperator doesn’t work well and the water freezes in the regulator and have had to pour many a bucket of hot water on a regulator. 👍👍

this kind of thing happens all the time on propane forklifts that run in the cold, they typically have coolant lines running to them to heat the valves. along with air brake valves as well, just yesterday i had to thaw out a valve on our tri axle because it wouldnt let you set the brakes.

Just did a job where the main meter/regulator was bad. The customer called out the gas company for a leak ( They come right out ). The tech started to tell me about the electrical problems with the unit, with his years of experience I guess also being a hvac guy. He was embarrassed by the guy sent out to help him.

Hot water works... if you have hot water. :-) I've had to use a microwave to boil some water to unfreeze a water heater. (condensate line) A hair drier or heat gun would also work. (but a heat gun can cause a fire.)

I have been on a roof with a service valve that had a hex key that had water frozen in it….98.6 degree water is all I had on me (in me) that was convenient to thaw the ice so I could pump it down. 🤫😂

taking it off to dump the water out the vent and adjustment port would have likely helped. 🤪 🐒 guessing it was full in the upper part. very dumb placement by installers, ideally run the gas line up and back down, placing the regulator up high (pain to mount/in the way) and at least install it horizontal or some inverted angle where water cannot easily get in the vent port or via the cap, even with a vent tube water can get in and pool on top the diaphragm.

I know working on an outside unit is no fun in inclement winter weather . Just & FYI (I know it’s easy for me from the warmth of my man cave ) you really should be checking those pressures with a manometer (lock up and working). I didn’t notice the model number of the Maxitrol regulator (?) it’s really not recommended to use unprotected tubing for a regulator vent. Maxitrol does make designed rain caps for their regulators . I’m not a big fan of Maxitrol regulators for outdoor use (indoor with limiters 👍, Maxitrol outdoor 👎). Outdoor use for me would be a B42 Itron 👍 (one of the best pounds to inches regulators on the market and this is coming from a gas fitter with 35 years of experience ) . Great job getting them up and running. Regards from STL..
