I originally built it using a 100 gallon galvanized tub. That works great but the condensation made it sweat and soak my floor so I decided to move that one. After moving it to a few new spots I felt I needed to experiment with different tub materials.
In this video I show you the new spots and also the different types of tubs you can use.
Enjoy!

This is the exact same rubbermaid tub that I have had for about a year. For those without a chiller and use frozen water bottles or ice, the rubber doesnt hold the cold as long as desired. That is the reason that I'm switching over to the 2x4x2 galvanized tub. Great video.

If you’re curious, then look up dew point. If there’s a enough humidity in the air and then hits a cold enough surface, it will sweat. Since you can’t control the temp or humidity outside, then only way to avoid would be to reduce the tub’s outside surface temperature by insulating around the tub. The lower your water temp, the more insulation you will need. The more humidity around, then more insulation needed. Air is like a sponge, warmer means it can hold more humidity. Another way would be to isolate the tub’s outer surface from the environment, so make it like a double wall structure (like a vacuum thermos). Though the air space btwn walls would need to be high enough to insulate. 6 inches? Air sealing the gaps with caulk will improve the insulation effect.

Hi Dave, I'm in Pittsburgh and using a 150gal Rubbermaid on the back patio, which is concrete. I like having it outside because of the natural cooling, and because after it rains, the water's high and I splash it out anyway. To combat the water on the floor, I'll put it on a raised, slatted wooden platform and just let it drain. I need to insulate it so it doesn't freeze in a few weeks. I ordered a packet of emergency Mylar blankets and a roll of silver HVAC tape. It's more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than spray-foam insulation and such. I've thought I'll reuse sheets of styrofoam packaging, but since last year, people moved away from it and toward engineered cardboard, so that source seems to be gone. The Mylar is a slicker solution because it's a water barrier as well. I'll build a ventilated wooden enclosure to make it look nice, and I'll make a Mylar-insulated lid (because leaves, it's clean dirt but still ;-). Insulating it will help me turn it into a hot tub, too, which is what my husband likes. I'm the only one doing the cold plunge, but we can plan on a hot tub day every so often and an immersion heater heats the tub to 97F in maybe 5 hours. It will be faster with Mylar. I do drop in 1/4 cup of bleach twice a week, that keeps the water nice and clean but not too chlorinated (YMMV depending on climate.)

This is awesome!! My newer videos show i did something similar with the wooden slat deck. Works like a charm!

It's the due point that's causing "sweat" any material will sweat. The air cannot hold as much moisture when it gets colder. 60 degrees is the dew point. You'll start getting moisture on anything (including grass) at 60 degrees and below.

Thanks for taking the time experimenting and documenting what you discover....you're saving us alot of time and money. Wondering if you could cover the tub with flex seal to insulate than enclose the tub in ceramic tile or terra cotta tile to keep it from sweating?

As you discovered, if the surface temp falls below the dew point, condensate will form on the surface. Install all the fittings, then take the tub to a quality spray foam applicator. 2" of closed cell foam, then coated in polyurea (think rhinoliner) and not only will it not sweat, it'll stay colder and use less energy. I used a foamed 100gal tank for a game cooler and it kept my elk nice and cold for 5 days till I could get it to the processor. My company makes the chemical, I'm happy to put you in touch with a quality foamer.

So I have the Cold Plunge with that chiller which is used in our wellness center and I can tall you that when the plunge is tipped over you can see that its sprayed with a TON of insulation foam between the outwall and inner wall. I would prob look into building a wood frame around the rubber one you are using now. Then spray insulation foam in between them (inside the cavity) or maybe see if you could pack the cavity with some sort of styrofoam to lessen the sweating.

Have you considered insulating the outside, (like many have suggested) and then place the tub on a shallow tray (like for water heaters) and drain the condensate outside. It may work. Best of luck.

I've been thinking in something similar that consists of picking 2 tubs, one a bit smaller than the other so you can put it inside of the bigger one. Then filling the space between the walls with foam insulation adding some spacers between walls so isolation thickness is consistent. That way not only you prevent sweating, you also will save a ton of energy. I would recomend a lid too! Let me know what do you think!
@DavidMausJr
@DavidMausJr Жыл бұрын
@@LuisRL i thought of that at first but then i was like, do i spend the time and money on trying to make my own insulated tub or do i just move it outside where it doesnt matter if water gets on the floor, so i did that. No i have too many options. lol I have the edge which doesnt sweat at all, the ice barrel that stays super clean and sweats a little and teh polar monkey that sweats a little but it is my favorite setup of all.

it is not the material that sweats, it's the moisture in the air that is condensing on any cold surface (hot air holds more moisture aka RH relative humidity) what you want is an isolated tub for farm animals drinking water (or a tub for fish transport on ice)

I see you have the tub a few inches away from the grass. You could keep the tub at a slight angle and let gravity do the work by letting the sweat drip outside into the grass. Idt you’d even feel the slight angle when you jump in.
