On summer days, after a drain and filling up freezer fresh - the compressor heat sensor beeping would go off non stop (didnt know they had that!), to touch the outside of freezer, it was burning hot from dissipating heat. Had to run a fan non stop to keep compressor coold. After that, only filled up 3inches of water and then froze it solid like a giant ice cube, then filled with water to melt that ice to get it cool. The freezer compressor will struggle trying to cool ALLLL that water. I got an XL freezer from a restaurant that was 20years old, so that may have been the problem. But make sure your compressor has a fan and freezer has a drain plug! Just tryin to help out others.

I have found that the Tararium JP-025F (420 GPH) for 100-200 gallon tanks and small ponds works very well for less than $40 with no filters to replace. In combination with a very small amount of hot tub chlorine crystals periodically and mine easily lasts two months before I need to change the water. Also I get in clean.

I have a similar setup for years. Family of three. I do not have a filter, just scup out the hair and bits with a small aquarium fish net. I add a 450ml bottle of H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide), it last from 2 to three weeks before I have to change out the water. I like the large aquarium filter idea, may try that to extend the time between cleaning.

Thanks for this video. Great idea on creating an ice bath. I've been doing cold showers for 3 months now, but it's to activate my brown adipose tissue for weight loss purposes. I just built my own chest freezer as well. I am definitely loving having it around. One question, do you find that the fluval aquarium water filter is helpful/effective in keeping your water clean? How long are you finding that you can stretch out your water change out period? One week, one month, etc? I like this simplistic approach to your water filtration. There are definitely other people using much more expensive methods of water treatment (i.e. ozone generators). Id like to avoid the expense if I can get my water changeout period to about a month.

I’m mostly curious if one will run into any problems with your freezer being filled with water and freezing during the winter in cold temps. Say it its 20 degrees for a few weeks straight. Will the water potentially freeze solid and expand and break the freezer? Or does the insulation of the freezer possibly prevent that?

I wish I had an easier way to do ice baths in the summer. Unfortunately, living in an apartment in the hot parts of California makes it difficult as I don’t have much space for a chest freezer and buying ice would get very expensive very fast. Even on the coldest setting, the shower water is around 70 degrees F (21 C). Not low enough to be therapeutic. I could buy a countertop ice maker, but I don’t even have the freezer space to store any ice and it probably wouldn’t produce enough on its own per day.
