Say Heah, Even though I have a Master Hunter in the San Mai III, I bough one in the 3V, WoW what a great bushcraft knife. it's slightly thinner, But what a slicer. Infact, this weekend even though it's going to be a wet one. I'm going Cold Steel. I'm teaming my Recon Scout which I have (2) in the CarbonV. I'm teaming it with my Master Hunter in the 3V and I'm bringing my C. S. Double Edge Machete. Oh, I'm also bringing my Estwing Double Bit Hatchet with my Bind Folding Saw that has a Eye Drop handle. Yeah, I should have alot of practice making fire in the rain. I really got my Master Hunter to parlay with my Fox Bushcraft Parang, which I plan to use as a One Tool Option. But just to make sure I have all my bases covered I got my 3V Master Hunter. But so far the 3V Master Hunter is one nice Slicer/Carver. Seriously, a very good bush craft knife.

I have 2 carbon 5 versions , one SK5 and one San Mai in the CSTM, and a carbon 5 and San Mai CSRS. To quote Ethan Becker who I respect very highly "CARBON V CUTS LIKE A SCREAMING WITCH" LOL! These are excellent hard use knives and beating on any knife is foolisment to me. I have carried collected and used CS knives since 1988. My oldest CSTM is well over 20 years old and was manufactured by HOFFRITZ knives for CS to CS standards of that time. It is an absolute trainwercker. Used properly these are knives you will be able to pass to your great grandchildren.

Enjoyed the video and common sense demonstrated. You can tell that you have knowledge on the subject rather than just spouting nonsense.

Great video. I just ordered one. I have always wanted the trailmaster but wasn't sure about the weight and here in hawaii I don't baton much. Have you considered modifying the knife?

Say Heah Mike, Yeah the Recon Scout is one of my Fav's. I have (2) Both in the CarbonV. I also have a 1990 San Mai 3 Trail Master that has a different ricaso than the new ones. I use one of my Recon Scluts the other one still has the red warning tape on it and in the original Cordura Sheath. It's still a virgin. Cood choice for a knife review.,,. p

Love the channel. I've been carrying a cold steel gurkha kukri in SK5 on my winter outings a few years now. I use a sven saw, and baton as necessary. One or two smaller/lighter blades for finer work. Usually a roach belly, or garuda. I've been totally happy with the SK5 still untreated its stained up a bit but easy to maintain the edge and light oil coat in storage. I'm mostly a cold weather camper, and always question the toughness/brittleness when the temps dip below 0*f. As I stated I baton. Looking forward to seeing how the O1 trailmaster holds up this winter. I think the differences in the kraton molds are just production runs. My new O1 Trailmaster is just as you said complete with a much more aggressive checkering. Willing to bet new Recons match the updated kraton molds. To those that want to carry the weight of an axe or hatchet... by all means carry the weight you want. I'm more weight conscience.

Hi, nice vid! Would you say that the Cold Steel Recon Scout is adequate for dressing/skinning game?

Yes, although a smaller knife would be better, the Recon Scout is perfectly capable of doing the job.

I wonder why they put a swedge on this knife if it is meant to be an outdoor knife. The swedge eats up baton sticks.

Clap Forboobies Swedges are fairly common on blades that follow or are of the clip or modified clip variety. They are bilateral, and are an angled grind of steel from the spine of the blade towards or to the tip of the knife. Some are purely stylistic. Some are there to remove some weight from the blade. Some in fact do form a "false" edge which can be be, or is already sharpened. In this case it is mostly stylistic and helps lighten the blade when you swing it (chop with it).
