Couldn't agree more. I've had mine for around half a year at this point and haven't bought another fixed blade since. The handle and grip is perfect for my medium-sized hands, and the SK5 steel is RIDICULOUSLY shock-absorbent. Nearly zero vibration or bounce when I chop into a branch or whatnot. Feels like an extension of the arm. Keep up the great reviews my man, been watching for a while but haven't dropped a comment in a good minute. 👍🫡

@talisikid1618, Kabar simply lacks the variety of steels, blade geometry, and folders to be placed in the category of Cold Steel as a brand. Kabar has specialized in one market niche.

i have several of the "newer" SRK's in various steels and grinds, but they are essentially collectors items. My real-use SRK is over thirty years old, and has been used for just about anything a knife of that size can be used for. 80% of the texturing on the handle has been worn smooth. The original nylon sheath has seen better days, having had its belt loop worn almost all the way through. (I've repaired it and modified it so it still works as well as it ever did.) This knife has performed all of the tasks you mentioned, as well as being used as an impromptu light-entrenching tool. For a period of about 12 years it was worn at least 250 days per year. It was made in America of Carbon V steel. I carried it during hundreds of hours of fresh water boasting. Constant use and regular light oiling has kept it rust-free. I'm well into retirement age, and no longer do the possibly crazy things I used to, but am still fairly active. This original SRK is still my general purpose go-to knife. I am a bit skeptical about the long-term durability of Cold Steel's modern SRK's, but the original can't be beat.

I own most of the knives listed above (including several SRKs) and can honestly say that the ESEE 6 is the best choice for the money and what you’ve described it will be used for. If you want to save a little, Ontario’s RAT-7 is another great option. Of course, the fit and finish isn’t quite up to ESEE specs, and the sheath is a soft nylon/cordura blend. However, it’s a tough, full tang 7 inch blade (with Micarta scales) that can be purchased for around $75-80. Good luck in your search..

Definatly a great knife for the price. If your looking to keep it USA I'd suggest Kabar, Tops,or Esee all have 1095 which is very similar to Sk5 (which is similar to 1084 steel) and are available in a variety of sizes. Bark River and Bradford are more expensive options but offer better steel choices such as 3V or Magnacut. Condor also makes inexpensive fixed blades in carvbon steel as well. Your going to be hard pressed though to find the price vs performance value of the Cold Steel ones in other knives. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

My first recommendation, if you can find one, is the Buck GCK with a spear point (or tanto if you like). Fantastic design with 5160 spring steel and a great factory sheath. After that Honestly, it sounds kind of redundant and obvious, but at your stated budget, I don’t know if you can do much better than a ESEE 6. I think that you should definitely set a standard of having a true full tang with bolt on scales, on your next edc fixer. Lastly, if you went with a smaller 4” blade, I personally switch back and forth with my ESEE 4 and my Tops SH4 with modified sheath, as my edc’s. Enjoy the excitement of the quest to find your new blade 🤙🏼

I have one of Survival Lilly’s knives, which is designed to emulate the SRK. I had never had a knife before that is that rugged. I have a Buck Personal knife for food and game prep, and light camp chores. But, when the going gets rough, the survival knife gets the jobs done. I think the SRK is a good example of a survival knife. Actually, I also whittled out a couple pairs of carrying handles for canoes with the Lilly knife. I came to appreciate the full handle. The SRK should perform very similarly. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Good review. I completely agree wth all you say about the SRK, and you describe its features very well. You didn't mention why the snap on the sheath broke. My only criticism is all the sun flsre on the right hand side of your video. This does change by the end, but moving the camera a little would have lost all the flare, and I wonder why you didn't. But other than that, good video. I agree it's such a great knife to handle and use, and for the price is probably the best knife for your buck. Like you use mine all the time.

What's the highest temperature and you have taken it to? Let me clarify I live in Arizona. Rubber grips on any utility tool seem to wear out a lot quicker. I have to change the grips out on my Honda XR650R Every year. I don't have the same death grip that I did in the sixties when I started riding. But that he can turn things into mush out here sometimes. Last year wasn't too bad we only had 14 days above 115 degrees.

I do a lot of field work near Las Cruces and White Sands New Mexico, so similar summertime temperatures. 100+ degrees is the norm with occasional peaks around 115. @grepora
@grepora 11 ай бұрын
It might be possible to fix the loose handles using slow set epoxy and injecting it with a needle syringe where the blade joins the handle. If the handle is still good and the blade is still good, why replace it? The rust spots you showed are nothing that can't be treated with a dab of vinegar or phosphoric acid. For the price, weight, and performance the CS SRK will be hard to beat. Maybe a Ka-Bar BK-6 or BK-16 or BK-18, but definitely not the over promoted/hyped BK-2 (a 16 ounce pry bar is just too much for me). For a big blade, I like the BK-21 -- it just takes some getting used to. For general purpose/survival, I like the ESEE Laser Strike (4.75" blade with 4.5 cutting edge). For lower cost blades the Mora Kansbol or Mora Companion HD (although I find the regular Companion handle to be more comfortable for my hand) or Condor Terrasaur are great. For a folding knife, the Cold Steel Voyager XL or Raja II (you gotta love Cold Steel's crazy looking folders, especially the Spartan or the Espada XL). Sorry this message is 6 months late, but this video just showed up on my view list. At first glance, I thought you were gideonstactical.

I’d say you still have a ton of life left in it. Midway has a sale right now and every once in a while. I just grabbed the 3v one for 109 and the sk5 one is 35. Also recently got the 3v recon scout for 199 from them. As far as a user goes that you can care less about what happens to it. Look into the Esee 6. Doesn’t matter what happens to it they will replace it if something goes wrong. The steel is similar so it will feel normal to you as well. The mh version will feel similar in shape to the srk as well. Not exact but similar. Those are my recommendations anyway

There is another economical knife that Coldsteel makes that just as good if not better, its the Recon Tanto! It's a better batoning and chopping knife. The 7"+ blade gives more length to enable a better swing. I have the SK5 and the VG10 version but wish they still make the 3V. Try it out, its under $40 at Midway for the SK5, and $80 for the VG10! To be honest, if you love SRK so much & are willing to spend upwards of $200.. get the 3V version. Alternatively.. look in to ESEE Knives.. like the ESEE 5 maybe. They have the best lifetime warranty in the knife industry. They will replace a broken knife, no matter what. Even of you don't have proof of purchase.. even if you buy it used. Even of you tell them you were using it chip away at slag on welds (they appreciate people telling them how they broke their product - but they will will replace it no matter whay). You can read about their Lifetime Warranty & see picture of knives they replaced over the years. I've used the warranty for a broken ESEE 3 that I was using wrong as a prybar because I didn't have the "correct tool" with me in the moment. So I can confirm their Lifetime Warranty in legitimate.

I had to save this to "watch later," but have a question. Cold Steel has changed ownership. I'm interested in the SRK and SRK compact but have heard quality has gone down since the ownership change and some of these knives have manufacturing/quality issues. Can you comment on the quality of their knives now? 6/6/24

Yes. I bought a recent SRK a few months ago. I have another whole video about that, if you're interested. I'll link it. I know this was months ago but my suggestion none the less is Utica UTK11UTKS4 stealth IV fixed blade. They also make a 3”, 6”, and a 7”. I recommend the 4” it is the best of everything. Utica makes a amazing knife. I carry the neck knife everyday. The knife I recommend is incredible I just can’t carry a belt knife in the city I’m stuck in right now. My 2 other knives I use all the time the mora Garberg an the BPS adventurer. I like the scandi for wilderness activity. The Utica will do anything those knives will do and I always have my Utica neck knife but neck knives are a acquired taste. Also when I bought my UTKN2 they only cost $40 now they are $80. I still feel it’s a deal but I can’t speak for everyone. At $40 it was unbelievable. Really hard to beat a SRK if I was you I would just buy the 3v version. Why look for something when you have what you like. I was taught skills Trump equipment. If you can do everything with your SRK why change. I personally don’t buy expensive knives they never do anything the cheap ones can’t. Usually the expensive knives will fail before a cheap knife. What many don’t understand is why Lynn Thomson made coldsteel. He is a martial artist and hunter. He couldn’t find knives that were made and designed for real world stuff. Coldsteel really changed everything. Affordable real knives that are capable of the task they were designed for. If you look nowadays we have knives designed by everyone but must are just gimmicks. Regardless of how people feel about Lynn he changed everything. I have no problem carrying anything he designed. Just my opinion I’m a ex army Ranger and martial artist myself. I study Filipino martial arts for the last 10 years so I have a good idea on knives.

I really love my SRK, but my biggest complaint is the sheath. My sheath is extremely tight on the knife, and it's pretty much impossible to draw with one hand. Even trying to push it out with my thumb is very difficult. Does anybody else have this problem?
@gideonsstuff

I haven't had that problem exactly. However, I got a new SRK that is a little tighter in the sheath than my old one. I also got a Demko Freereign that is almost impossible to draw one handed, and it's sheath is similar to the SRK. I've tried rubbing mineral oil on the spot where the sheath locks the knife in and it helps a bit. Thanks for watching!

That tends to happen in video reviews. Talking is a great way to share information. For example, I'm sure if you listened to your elementary school teachers when you were young you would know how to construct a sentence in a way that doesn't result in you sounding like a chromosome deficient Neanderthal. First, you need a sentence subject. You must also capitalize the first word of a sentence and put punctuation on the end of the sentence. Further, you used the wrong form of "too." Your sentence should say : "You talk too much."
