The one Cold Steel machete I would like to see Joe X test is the Cold Steel Kopis machete - it also has a handle very similar to the "D-Guard" style but it is not completely closed.. and it is a much bigger more robust handle. I have owned my CS Kopis for years now.. it is still brand new.. and I have absolutely NO IDEA how good or bad the hand shock vibrations would be with this handle.. as I never plan to use mine for chopping wood.. or cars.. or bricks.. or Iron rods - My Kopis is reserved for the battlefield.. for when the Apocalypse comes. I dont think GMS is even making the Kopis in 65Mn.. so the only ones available out there are still the old "Made in South Africa" 1055 Carbon Steel Kopis Machetes. I will NOT believe that the handle on the CS Kopis machete is shit.. until Joe X proves that it is! Salute Joe X!

The Kopis Machete grip is very shock absorbant. I've beaten mine on hard woods with 0 issue. If I had one complaint, it would be blade thickness. I wish they had made it out of the thicker stock the Magnum Kukri is made of instead of the thinner stuff.

Quality products at a fair price. Now, because of corporate greed, they are using cheaper materials and cheaper labor. The quality of their products will continue to go downhill, all in an effort to maximize profits. Sure, in the SHORT TERM, they will make more money, but in the LONG TERM, people will realize quality has gone downhill and stop buying their products. Sad to see a great company go this route. Anyway, keep up the good work Joe X. Marlboro!!!

The 0.65% Carbon content means it'll take a little bit more time to sharpen than the 1055 (0.55%) version, but it'll also hold that edge a little longer. And the manganese in the blade will make it more wear resistant. It also means it'll make it more rust resistant. Basically, the switch from 1055 to 65mn just means they switched from a budget utility tool steel to a budget sword steel and that tracks with the design.

TL, DR: Cold Steel Machetes never were the best, just unbreakable, now they compromised. Just went back and watched the original cutlass video. There are 2 things the 65Mn ones do better, edge/tip retention and taking a set, Joe also mentioned less hand-shock, I was wondering about that since the blade is a bit stiffer it should vibrate less. The grip also broke on the original, likely the combination of the hard plastic and vibration. Might not even vibrate less but in a different place, so you feel less but the grip experiences more. The 1055 took a set when fllexing, the 65Mn did not and sprang back to straight (only the tip had a slight bend). Me personally I don't try to cut steel pipe with a machete, so I have to honestly say it's not that bad. Of course it's not the "maximum toughness" Cold Steel advertized for years, but their machetes never were the best allrounders. Their soft steel made them dull much too easily for my taste (compared to Tramontina or Imacasa for example). I primarily bought machete shapes from CS that nobody else offered, but with common style machetes (lating, bolo, sugar cane choppers) you can do much better for a similar price.

Comparing to the Lesher made one (SA), it's a piece of garbage. I'm sure they changed supplier because Lesher doesn't sharpen their machetes. Chinese company makes and sharpens it for the same price or less!

yeah, i did not thought about the sharpening!!! so true!!! most of the SA had this black coating on the edge!!!

@joex I'm sure that was the reason. Lynn Thompson and his crew sharpened everything at their headquarters, in California. No more that. So, now, Cold steel needs their finished product.

He's mad because those S. African tactical machetes are amazing. I got six of them. I LOVE the Kukris. The big Latin machete is sweet too and the chopper and the gladius. No more huh? So it goes.
