PLEASE THUMBS UP SO DAVE CAN SEE!! You don't necessarily have to run from wire guided torps, one good way to avoid wire guided torps and still keep your own wires is to make the enemy loose you on his sonar, so he wont know where to send his torpedo. So slow down just enough to get that passive sensor to compleately loose you (0) and after that you can increase speed just enough so he wont pick you up again (5) and creep away from the enemy torp course, the enemy will keep his torp headed for your last known position , just make sure that you will be out of the seeker cone by the time the torp get close to you. If he has detected you on sonar and fired you must take action to drop his sensors in the signature tab to 0 or bellow to do that! If he is using active to track you give him a lower profile and increase vertical separation or use the layer if you can, same logic, just do whatever you can to get that active at 0 or bellow and then keep it bellow 5 while the torp is in the water, with just enough lateral displacement to avoid the seeker when it goes active near your last known position (and the seeker on the soviet torps aside from the USET 80 are quite trash, so you wont have to get too far from your last known position) (also the USET 80 is NOT wire guided). You must also remember to not go above 5 on his sensors while his torp is searching because if he picks you up again and the torp still has the wire he will start to send it towards you again, but at least the torp will have less fuel and possibly wont reach you if that happens. This is very usefull if you want to avoid the counterfire and still keep your own wires. The AI could also have counter fired blindly a wireguided torp, in this case you wont have to worry about his wire unless you are detected later while his torp is still in the water! ALSO, NOTICE THAT THE DIESEL SUB WIRES NEVER BREAKS FROM EVASIVE ACTION (Thats because in dot mod the wire break speed is 18 or 20 kt I belive, and the angle of the tube is not taken into account, only the speed, since the diesels max speed is often bellow 20, their wire never breaks. And their torps only seams to go dumb because they are blind going flank and cant pick you up on sonar when they go evasive, but in fact the wire is still there). They will only loose the wire when they are sunk.

It'll end if he wins, the campaign does have a definite end. Besides, you really don't want it to never end. Look at the Simpsons and Family Guy and other long-running series and see what happens to something which doesn't ever end, which is not allowed to die with dignity.

Coming back to watch this video just reminded me of how much I despise Tangos. They aren't firing USET-80s at you, they're firing the wire-guided TEST-71M, which is why noisemakers and knuckles don't help, surfacing didn't do anything, etc. It goes 40 knots, so the only things that can outrun it are the Soviet Alfa and Papa, and has an active range of 15km. The Tango also literally can't go fast enough to break wires, so it can continue to target you relentlessly while evading. The TEST-71 family does, however, have a mediocre max depth of 400m, so you likely could have avoided it just by sitting very gently on the bottom. This doesn't work with the USET-80, which can't be outdived by anything except the Soviets' own Mike, but lacks wire guidance. For visual identification - a TEST-71 has a black nose, then a thick red band behind it, followed by 2 white rings and another 2 at the back of the torpedo. A USET-80 has a black nose followed by a yellow ring, then red, white, red, 2 white, and another white at the back of the weapon. Red nose = wire guided hell, but you can outdive it (floor permitting) in anything that isn't a GUPPY IIA/III/Tench, Barbel, Nautilus, Skipjack, George Washington, Oberon, Kobben, Collins, Dolfijn, or Zwaardvis. Due to the way crush depths work in this game, even a Permit, Sturgeon, Narwhal, Los Angeles, Ohio, or Resolution could probably do it, with varying degrees of risk and assuming 100% hull integrity. Yellow nose = wireless self-homing, can't be outrun or outdived but probably can be thrown off with a MOSS and some knuckles.

Theory - The Admiralty chose to send a highly experienced deep water nuke sub, unsupported, to defend from diesel boats near the coast of England herself in shallow water. The Trafalgar would be at distinct multiple disadvantages compared to the diesels. Trafalgar SHOULD have been heavily supported (outside of the game engine of course). The loss would be less the fault of the Captain and more the fault of the Admiralty not properly backing up their few critically needed subs - Heads would roll UPstairs when the Queen found out. Further, being able to get most of the crew out in one piece, more or less, would offset the loss of the sub - Ships are replaceable, a lot faster than trained and, more importantly, experienced crews are. Though one might argue, often the ones needing replacing most are the Admiralty themselves. More than a few ill fated RN ships would agree Id wager. Loving the series, especially the story and world building effort you put in. Keep up the fine work sir! And hello from fellow Commonwealth Canada, eh?

My personal headcanon for this is that this also takes place at about he same time as Wolfpack345's 1984 Narwhal campaign, and with the success of the narwhal, even in shallow water against a wolfpack (heh) of Diesel boats, the british admiralty, wanting not to be outdone by their american counterparts, decided to do the same, but in theoretically safer waters. On paper, HMS Trafalgar was one if the best choices for this, having one of, if not the most, experienced crew, but alas, the Tango was smart, and the crew complacent, and they paid the price.

I checked your first report, and yes Captain Cooke. It seemed your XO, Owen B. who was with you during your first mission back in late December requested to remain by your side despite recent challenges. Either that or your superior officers decided he shared part of the blame for the loss of Trafalgar and lumped him in with you. edit: for reference, kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4ezpWaCmtNjbMk

I've thought of a good explanation for the new sub, Coincidentally, let's say a week or so before the Trafalgar was sunk, the shipyards in Faslane (or somewhere in Cumbria) had just finished making the Tireless. Command decides to give Captain Cook and his crew another chance (a second life if you will) due to their previous records and their impact on the war. Here's hoping the Tireless has a better time than the Trafalgar...

From my understanding, the british sub that sank the uboat had fired a volly of torpedos at varing depths. Also the british were the first to sink a modern warship (well moderately modern) during the falklins war. Oddly enough it was originally a u.s. warship during ww2.

RIP Trafalgar. I think those two torpedoes you somehow avoided used up the last of your luck. In other news, that's the RN down to just 13 nuke and 16 DE boats assuming no other losses. Good thing the war's nearly over. And yes, the RN hold the record for submerged sub on sub kills (HMS Venturer on U-864), for a nuclear attack sub sinking an enemy warship (HMS Conqueror and Belgrano obviously) and for battleships sinking submarines (HMS Dreadnought and U-29).

Another excellent tense episode. Spoilers below: . . . . . . . I had a feeling it was gonna break bad when you got really distracted by the other sub porpoising, cause those torpedoes were still in the water. But you performed valiantly and apparently were able to save most of the crew! So good looking out there! Best of luck on what I'm sure will be another excellent (and probably very tense) epsisode with the Tireless.

Against homing torpedoes, always turn into the weapon's track and dive or climb. You can outmanoeuvre them in the vertical plane. Go shallow or deep but then go quiet (5kts) and wait. The weapons will circle - sometimes they spiral up or down (if set to hunt subs) but you can usually wait them out.

alough the loss of a trafalger class submarine in wartime would probarly get Cpt Cooke fired in reality it is possible due to his sucsess rae in the war the admirality would see it as shooting themselves in the foot if they got rid of cooke so they gave him another command in which to make up for his defeat so bassically the way see it is the fact his sucsess rate was so good there willing to give him one more chance to salvage his career

I've been enjoying your series here immensely, for all the reasons others have said. In this conflict, I remain puzzled as to why you decided intentionally to remain in the area directly above those circling torpedos and not taken a course directly away from them at flank speed. They did not appear to be wire-guided given their circling behaviour.

Scotch or Bourbon? What do you mean "not a drink?" Los Angeles class subs, some had dive planes on the bow instead of the conning tower so that they could punch through ice. If they're on the conning tower they can't do that without breaking them. Also... DotMod 0.4 has the new British subs including Churchill class but it also has maximum launch depths for some torps (Tigerfish being one) and altered max depths for them too (also Tigerfish, it lost that 600m max depth reduced to 420m ish). It's a pain in the butt hunting anything with Tigfish now, they're pretty slow and now can't go deep either (Sierra's outrun and out dive them) and USET-80's are still stupidly annoying and don't sod off when you knuckle or noise maker.

Would a decoy launch have helped ? Were they the pair you had seen earlier? Was slowing down too long for a sonar picture a contributing factor?
@pluemas
@pluemas 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, those torps could have been pulled off the trial by firing a moss while Dave was above them and then scampering away in the opposite direction when they took the bait. He got a bit distracted manoeuvring and sank too low. He also could have blow baffles to dodge. USET 80s are vulnerable to getting distracted and often it's better to go quiet and give them something to chase, rather than to go evasive.
