Going Solo

2 жыл бұрын

Join me back in Wales as I hike into the clouds and camp on one of Snowdonia’s beautiful mountains. This was actually the trip I had intended to take last time I was in Wales, but unfortunately because the weather I camped in a different location. Once on top of the mountain, I find a relatively flat campsite using my GPS with the intent of having a nice view in the morning if the clouds lift. After camp is setup, I get water and the cooking begins. For this trip, I make a couple traditional Philly cheesesteaks with homemade waffle fries! I was really happy with how this meal turned out! Then I have a couple beers, chat with the camera and its off to bed. In the morning, I am treated with some really nice views from the campsite that was selected in poor visibility and boy did I pick a nice spot. Because most of the hike the previous day was shrouded in the cloud, I decided to film the hike down the mountain to share the breathtaking scenery! It was nice to capture the mountain with something other than my GoPro like I had intended the last time I was in Wales! Really hope you enjoy watching this trip. If you have any questions or just want to say hi, please leave me a message in the comments. Thanks for Watching!!

I live in an urban apartment in the pacific northwest US...I enjoy the calm, somehow I get the solitude...I am too old to go and its been years since I've been out, and I never did it with your brand of class. You do this really well....from production, to location, to foodstuffs, to even some of the misadventures...take care of your children as you take care of this hobby turned almost a personal obligation, I am sure I am just one of many who truly enjoy your efforts...My patio porch terrace is about 44 inches wide and about ten foot long, its about the size of a good two man tent...I have it empty and sometimes consider setting up a pitch right there. But instead, I enjoy the product of your efforts. This note is my way of saying thank you, heartily. I cannot send cash, I just can't spare it, but you deserve the sponsorship. I only just discovered your site, so, lots to check out, wishing you well, good health and prosperity you and yours...Peace!

Thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot! I originally started this channel as a way to give back to a community I have enjoyed watch myself over the years. When I am very busy working or with my family and I can’t get out for a camp myself, I rely on watching camps here on KZbin to escape vicariously through them. To hear that others are enjoying my videos in the same way really makes me happy! Back when I lived in a city I actually would setup my one man tent on my little patio sometimes. I also would often just brew a coffee out there with my camp stove as well 👍. Thank you so much for this comment. It really made my day! All the best 😀

Very happy to hear that you are enjoying the videos. One of the reasons I wanted to start this channel is because I also watch many outdoor channels, when I’m unable to get out and camp myself. It’s nice to be able to contribute to this kind of content on KZbin 👍. Really appreciate the comment! ATB

It started with one vlog, then jump in to another one. I found that solo camping or solo backpacking is a pain relief and anti stress invest, busy with work and city traffic, watching your video is soo calm and relaxing my mind, spiritual and body. You know sometimes I should go for a solo camping, get intimate with nature. Great Job my friend.

Great scenery shots on the way back. You did the philly cheeseteak justice by using shaved ribeye and sauteed onions like Gino's in Philadelphia. Except he uses the infamous cheese wiz. I prefer a more robust cheese like you used. Another great excursion. Take care.

I love how proper wild campers pace up and down a small area to see if it’s a suitable pitch, like a cat or dog settling onto a blanket. I’ve got a very experienced mate who does exactly the same! Beautiful stuff all round once again sir. I can see you hitting silly subs before very long, and well deserved as you seem to approach this KZbin thing in just the right way. Oh, by the way, a good potential mod for the Soulo (which may help with pitching on less than perfect terrain) is to have a few extra inches of Dynema with a tension adjuster on the 6 flysheet rings so that you aren’t having to put the peg in where the rings dictate - you can place them in a multitude of places nearby. Cinching them down also really gives an extra bit of tension in high winds too. I’ve done it on mine recently and it really helps. Keep them coming! Cheers. Rich 👍 PS From some angles, with your beanie on, you have a look of Benelux Cumberland-Sausage out of The Doctor Strange. Has anyone ever pointed this out? 😜
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I really look forward to your comments Rich. Always well thought out. Love the dog and cat analogy! Haha, but it’s almost comical that my feet managed to miss every large rock on this spot when doing so. It was fine once my sleeping pad was inflated, but a bit bumpy until. Really surprised lately how many people have been watching the videos. It’s been fun to get to talk to so many people or get great tips like the one you mentioned. I’m going to try that tip on my Enan if it ever arrives! As for the Benedict Cumberbatch comparison …. 😂 yes my students would make that comparison quite often. Especially if I would grow any facial hair, I would get called Dr. Strange. Ugh children haha. ATB

@@GoingSoloOutdoors Ooh an Enan… My OTHER Hille is also an Enan - a fine choice. Fingers crossed it arrives in time for spring! I think you’ll love it - noticeably less sitting up space than the Soulo but a bigger vestibule for that lovely cooking you do. Looking forward to it already Sherlock! 👍 😉

@@maggi666 well I’m glad the extra talking isn’t annoying. I just don’t want anyone to think I’m stating the obvious because I just don’t know what everyone’s experiences are. As for the price of gear, I think there’s a lot of great gear out there that’s relatively cheap and of great quality. The first thing that comes to mind are my Mora knives. They are some of the best and most reliable knives and they also happen to be my cheapest. In my experience gear that keeps you warm and dry tends to cost the most money. And the lighter it is the more expensive it gets. So if it boils down to my safety I’m willing to pay more. I also always try to buy things on sale though. And if I’m interested in something I’ll typically look it up on KZbin first. It’s nice because you can usually find lots of video reviews!

Same. Only clothing and backpacks! We buy cheaper versions of cookware etc and our Vango Cairngorm is cheap yet absolutely excellent and stands up to storms and wind! We only use cheap mats too, with a silver roll underneath! In fact we have two brilliant Vango tents!

It's nice to know you have that bulletproof shelter that you can count on when Mother Nature is in one of her moods. Pushing your pegs into soft ground is't something I've ever done because here in the Western part of America the ground is rock hard & pegs need to be pounded into the ground. I'm actually somewhat envious of all the running streams that seem almost everywhere. Sadly, here in Western America way too many streams are all dried up, & ponds are almost non-existent. Never take the beauty & sound of running water for granted. Having limited visibility because of fog is almost unheard of. A dust storm is what we most likely will have to contend with when visibility is limited & that means lots of strong gusty winds. I, too, always unroll my tent from the foot end which will be facing into the wind direction after its pitched. Not a lot of daylight hours during this time of year is definitely something to keep in mind so you can set up camp while there is still daylight. I enjoy going along with your real-life outdoor adventures vicariously although my tent is a Hilleberg Enan instead of your Soulo. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A. P.S. I see you're still driving on the wrong side of the road. :)

As a kid, I spent summers traveling out west to visit my Grandmother during the summers! I really like Nevada, however we would travel often to Colorado to hike many of the 14ers. Most of my camping hiking life though has been spent in the Northeastern US. Lots of streams, animals and trees. I’ve really come to love the treeless Fell‘s in the UK. I will be a Enan owner as well at some point. I’ve been waiting for almost a year for it. And I just received a message from Hilleberg last week saying they’re still experiencing some delays getting it shipped to me. Oh well. I’m looking forward to a lighter Hilleberg though for some longer treks. As for driving on the wrong side of the road. I’ve become so used to driving on the left these last couple years that when I visited the states it felt incredibly wrong driving there haha! It’s incredible how quickly the brain becomes use to something! Thanks for watching and the comments! ATB

What a lovely and unpretentious journal. Thanks for sharing. Love this route and have done it a few times. You seem to be a fan of fjallraven. I’m thinking of upgrading to Hilleberg for a 4 season. Is Soulo heavy? I’ve MSR Hubba which is great for 3 seasons

Thanks! It’s a beautiful route! Haha yeah, I really like the durability and weather resistance of Fjallraven’s g1000 material and their clothing has become the go to gift for me, from family members. Not complaining though! The Soulo isn’t light, but it’s my preferred shelter if I go somewhere where the weather might be unpredictable! All in, with all the stuff sacks it’s 5lbs 5oz. I’ve gotten use to the weight and don’t really think about it anymore. I just love the dual inner/outer pitch design and trust it in fowl weather! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Have a great day!

@@GoingSoloOutdoors For sure! I am trying to go super light for my Appalachian Trail thru-hike in 2022, but man, I could save a whole lot of restaurant bills by bringing a small fry pan and hiking in some occasional fresh whole food. I am sure it is a morale booster on those cold windy nights to have a meal. BTW Great footage! I enjoy all of your videos. You hike to the most gorgeous spots. I have friends in the UK and in Scotland. I hope to make it to Europe someday. *knock on wood

That’s exciting! Good luck with your thru hike! Having grown up on the East Coast, it’s always been a dream of mine to hike the AT. I’ve hiked and camped along many sections but now with a family I won’t be hiking anything that distance for a while. I do however want to hike the Coast to Coast in England or the Cape Wrath Trail in Scotland as they do not require months! There are plenty of foods you can prepare without a frying pan. Although my snow peak titanium plate which I use as a fry pan is incredibly light! I’m sure you will come up with all kinds of yummy meals that don’t require cooking! Glad you are enjoying the videos. I’ve really really grown to love the landscape here. There’s something magical about the Fells and UK Woodlands! I really appreciate the continued support and the comments! ATB
