Join me on a really nice winter hike and camp in the mountains. Finally got to see some proper snow on this one!! For this camp I am using a new tent, the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 that my incredible wife got me for Christmas. It was really nice to have a bit of extra space in this tent compared to my other one-man tents that I normally use. As usual, after setting up camp and enjoying the views I sit down to make a nice meal cooked using my ultralight cook kit. After dinner I share some tips I use to stay warm when the temperatures are really cold in winter. If anyone else has any others please leave them down in the comments for everyone. It’s always great to share this kind of information so that more people are not afraid to get out and enjoy camping in the winter! I really enjoyed this camp and I hope you do too. Please leave any questions or comments down below and I’ll see you on the next one! Thanks for Watching

The realisation that you are hiking to your campsite while walking back and fourth moving your camera along the way to share your journey hit me while watching. Your editing skills are truly amazing , I feel like I, too, have been on a journey. And then if the hiking and camp set up is not already a feat in itself you then cook a meal Gordon Ramsey would be amazed by 😂. Thanks for sharing! Watching from South Island, NZ

Great video. Beautiful raw nature scenery. Might be worth mentioning that only the US uses the old Fahrenheit temperature system and the rest of the world use Centigrade. So to understand what you mean by “cold”, 12 degrees needs converting to -11 Degrees Centigrade (eleven degrees below freezing point) for the rest of the world to understand you. We watch your videos all around the world mate and need to know these things :-)

Winter camping in the snow is one of my all time favorite times to camp. Aside from being beautiful, the silence you get when everything is covered in snow is something special. Great vid but a few observations. Need a cozy on the nalgene as temp will freeze the water, and trekking poles would aid safety by ensuring you dont take a step into a sinkhole! Otherwise great location 👍🏻

Thanks. I agree trekking poles are definitely a must in the snow! When I’m not pointing the camera I actually have my tripod in hand and use it as a trekking pole. It’s carbon fiber and pretty beefy. I use it quite frequently to test stream crossings and test for frozen boggy spots. Works well but I never really get to show that. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment! It’s the fourth quarter. Thirty seconds to go. My wife is yelling at the TV. She’s excitedly contributing a combination of advice, exasperation, enthusiasm, and encouragement. We’re watching “goin.solo” as he cooks in his tent on youtube. She’s yelling “add more cheese……, don’t stir too much, foil on now, …. more cheese…., more cheese …. Thank goodness! Phew, he did it…. Yes this was the keb 72. Around 34-35lbs which is definitely the top end of what I would carry on a trip like this. Fortunately the carry system of the Keb pack makes it very comfortable 👍. This winter I did a camp in Snowdonia with an updated sleep system which is significantly warmer and I only needed a 45L pack. The Enan is a fantastic tent 👍

The trangia stove is my all time favorite but the Xboil stove is also fantastic. Especially when lighting it in cold weather. It’s extremely easy. Curious why you would use that alcohol stove with foil instead of one of the trangia traingle stoves with the spirit burner that has the lid to control the flame. You certainly have a lot of stoves to choose from... and a lot of Hilleberg tents...lol

This stove is extremely easy to light in cold temperatures and I was able to carry two of them at the same weight of one trangia. I was just trying a different setup with two stoves going at once to help cook things a bit faster. It worked ok. The trangia does have much better temperature control while cooking though 👍. I do have many tents. It’s a weakness 😅. I LOVE tents!

Hey mate, fabulous trip and cooking. How do you keep any spatter off the tent? 🤔
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Ай бұрын
For the most part if you are cooking at the right temperature it doesn’t spatter too much. Typically never enough to get on the tent fly. Occasionally I may get a bit just on the tent footprint. And that will just get wiped after cooking and further cleaned when I get home.

One think I liked about my nammatj compared to my Nallo was that if you pitch the rear into the wind, the rear of the roof does not flatten with wind reducing living space like it does with the nallo. With the nammatj though , my head was always touching the inner, not so though with the nallo near the entrance. The nammatj is the best tunnel imho.

Hi Chris, I’m a fan of your channel! I would absolutely recommend the Nammatj 2. It’s a Hilleberg so as you’d expect it’s a quality tent. It’s easy to pitch and I have been really impressed at how well it handles the wind and the space inside is absolutely fantastic. Before I got this I would normally camp in the Enan and the Soulo, so the extra space is a real treat on those long winter nights. You do of course pay a little bit of a weight penalty and it definitely takes up more room in your pack compared to the Soulo but I have found it to still worth it. ATB man!

Great video, great drone footage!! Thanks for that. Q: Are your Keen insulated? How do you deal with cold in your feet while walking? On the other hand, had it been better to use micro spikes or no need? I thought the orange side of the sleeping pad should go towards the ground. Amazing cook, btw. Thanks again for these videos!!

I have a pair of insulated boots but on this trip I just wore wool socks with my keens. I only used micro spikes towards the end of the hike on the way down the mountain the next morning. A few rocky areas had iced over. I think I may have said crampons in the video but I meant micro spikes 👍. The orange side of the pad you sleep on and the silver side of the pad goes towards the ground according to Nemo. I just follow the manufacturer instructions since they are the ones who designed the pad. I believe Thermarest designs their closed cell foam pads to be slept on in the opposite orientation(silver side up). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! ATB

Amazing how you managed to travel with so much gear! drone, camera and tripod, proper food, 4 season tent and all that warm weather gear! This is my dream but i thought i would be limited to a 1 person tent in these conditions as i am putting my gear list together for winter. Can i ask what your total pack weight was for this trip and how far you would be prepared to hike with it?
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I don’t remember the exact pack weight but I believe it was around 31lbs which is the top weight I would carry. I never break the 20% rule and that’s including food and camera gear. However, I do remember this feeling surprisingly more comfortable than normal. This pack has an incredible suspension system so it made it feel lighter than it actually was. On this trip I hiked a total of six miles. For a heavier load out like this I would keep it to an overnight trip. I’d probably limit it to a round trip distance of 15miles. Anything more than that I would start changing out gear. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

I am deciding between the soulo bl and the Nammatj 2. What would you recommend for a one man winter wild camp.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Жыл бұрын
That’s a tough one, since they are nearly the same weight. When I purchased my Soulo it only came in the red label so it was an easier choice. I went with the Soulo first. If space is your biggest concern though, I’d go with the Nammatj, as it’s a palace for one and can sleep two if you ever want company. However, if space is not a big deal to you, I think the Soulo is plenty large enough for one but it is a bit more versatile because it is a completely free standing tent and it has a smaller footprint. I’ve even pitched it on a stone pebble beach. There is a reason the Soulo is so popular! If you only plan on getting one Hilleberg and camping by yourself, I’d go with the Soulo. But if you ever think there is a possibility you will buy another I’d actually go with a red label Soulo as it’s still crazy strong but you will save over a pound in weight. I’ve been in some pretty nasty conditions with mine and it’s been solid. You can actually also purchase 10 mm black label poles to increase its strength at a later date if you feel it’s necessary. Sorry for the ramble. I love talking Hilleberg tents. I hope that helps. Either way, both are absolutely fantastic tents, so you really can’t make a bad decision! I ditch my fjallraven gear in winter as it’s just not warm enough and just gets wet. Synthetic gear for uk winter.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Жыл бұрын
👍I totally agree! You should always wear synthetics or wool in the winter. As the saying goes cotton kills. Interested, what Fjallraven gear do you have? I am wearing a synthetic base layer, wool mid layer, and a down jacket (at camp) and use the Keb jacket as breathable shell. Also wearing the Keb trousers with synthetic long john’s underneath (at camp). The Keb series is great because the majority of it is synthetic with G1000 panels which I will wax. They also has a zips that you can open to keep you cool so that you don’t sweat. When properly waxed I will even wear this Jacket instead of my waterproof jacket if it’s not a downpour as it’s more breathable and will keep me dry! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Have a great weekend!
@RaP22
@RaP22 Жыл бұрын
@@GoingSoloOutdoors I’ve have the same trousers but a different jacket. No matter how well you wax g1000 it will never be 100% waterproof. Once wet stay wet. Definitely 👍 in the base layers. Also if I’m up mountains I’m all for weight saving so each to their own as I couldn’t be arsed hauling a big heavy hillie or heavy rucksack up tops. As much as I love my fjallraven gear just not for me during winter climbs. Not shitting on you as I really enjoyed your video. Couple of things I do like.. flat cap and the Hestra gloves.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@RaP22 Yeah no worries 😀👍. It’s definitely not 100% waterproof. It’s interesting because I did a camp not too long ago where I had both my Keb jacket and my waterproof jacket. I was trying to test just how water resistant I could get it. I expected it to soak through eventually, but I was bummed that even my waterproof wetted out on me also. I do find that it dries fast however if you keep it on your body. Totally not trying to be disagreeable btw! I just absolutely LOVE talking about outdoor gear!! I also agree about the weight. I try to follow the 20% rule and I’ll never carry above 20% my body weight. This was definitely at that limit. Luckily, this bag, even though it’s heavy, has an amazing carry system. I was going to actually carry all this gear in my ultralight Z-Paks rucksack to try to offset some of the extra weight of the hilly. In total it would’ve only weighed 25 pounds. However, once I put it on my back, it wasn’t nearly as comfortable (and oddly felt heavier) so i decided to go with the heavier rucksack. Shocked the difference the carry system made. I’m even now considering getting the Keb 52 to start using instead of my normal Friluft 45. It was just a dream on the back. Glad you like my lucky cap. It’s been with me through a lot. Hestra gloves are 👌 amazing! OK sorry to keep rambling. Like I said, I just love talking about gear. ATB and thanks for the chat!

I loved it, thank you so much, by the way if you hook up with Murray from “ Scottish Mountains a steaming boots film production, you won’t be sorry, he is such an incredible wise and beautiful soul, he has a 360 degree camera go pro and a Drone, that can capture not only the stars at night so vividly but also different types of clouds at night in this beautiful concave aperture, that really shows what you would like us to see, I’m sure 100% that Murray would let you know the make and model of his equipment ; So next time you do the awesome winter wild camp, you won’t be disappointed that you couldn’t capture the moment, both for yourself and for your followers, if you ever get the chance and I’m sure Murray wouldn’t mind taking you along, he’s that kind of guy, a bit of a legend to all of us who still can, and those of us that cannot anymore, get up and out there with you all. It seems as well that you like your solitude in these spiritual moments to yourself, Murray’s the same, he places Scottish poetry and stanzas on his most emotive experiences .Sadly there are not many who are up for this kind of extreme wild camping, he often goes with R/S Gerry or Mark I’m sure they would love to meet a young winter snow camper such as yourself, but be careful he may try to make you eat a Scots Egg 😂 ( He would laugh if he saw my crack about the Scots egg) you can comment on Murray’s KZbin Channel asking him which make and model of the equipment Re: The drone and 360 degree go pro, he is ever so approachable and we love him over here, you couldn’t ask a nicer person. If you get on his channel you’ll see what I mean and Gerry, Gerry ! Knows the name of every mountain and Monroe in the highlands, from wherever he’s standing, If I were you I would get in touch with these reluctant hero’s, if you want a big experience. ! Blessings to you Old Owl 🦉 an 80s and 90 s and turn of the century, climber hill and mountain Walker, female pushing 60 who had an accident and now am thrilled to live vicariously through yours and other peoples channels. Climb every hill every Monroe and mountain, as if it were your last, dig peat, cross a burn, and feel and hear every crunch of snow beneath your feet, the sound of water trickling or gushing that 😮😅has been finding new ways throughout time to pass unto the sea, for the call of the whole is felt, when you follow your raw beating heart up and into the wilds of The Scottish Mother Earth. Thanks! Good tip. Oddly enough the metal pegs were fine to get out. It was the plastic delta pegs that had really become anchored. Hey man cool video. Thanks. I am curious for these types of tents when you stake the tent pegs you are just securing them into snow correct? You aren't pushing though tne snow to reach ground? It doesn't seem like they woukd hold secure in just snow but i have never done it myself so needed to ask. Ps. -5or 6 isn't cold. Here in Winnipeg Canada it hits -40 celcius.every year not including wind chill😂😂😂. Its insane. One time it hit -52 celcius and was the coldest place on earth that day. To survive that we would need like a ridiculous amount of gear haha. But its cool to test yourself. Going to try some winter camping this year but need to get myself a tent like this. What i like most about hillebergs is how easy they are to set up. No one wants to dick around withour gloves in -25.
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors 10 ай бұрын
Depending on the temps before the snow fell and how quickly it came down the ground may not be frozen. In this case underneath the snow, I was able to push the pegs into the ground and then pack snow down on top of it which froze overnight. Otherwise I would need to use snow anchors. I agree it’s not that cold. Back when I lived in the US it definitely got much colder in the winter there than it does here. Didn’t get down to -52 where I lived though! That is cold 🥶. Completely agree. Hillberg’s are extremely easy to set up, even in terrible conditions and they are definitely the most reliable tents I’ve ever used. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. ATB

Great video! I could comment on a lot of things, such as I also use that tent and love it. However, what's interesting to me is how much you can fit in your winter pack. It's interesting how little actually even fits in a large pack during a winter trip. I wonder what the R-value would be on an 8 R-value inflatable pad that had a hole in it...which might be why everyone brings redundancy. Would it be an R-value of 1? 2? Has anyone tried it? I imagine it would be cold, but how cold?
@GoingSoloOutdoors
@GoingSoloOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I could definitely fit much more in this 72L pack if I leave out the closed cell foam sleeping pad. I only actually put it inside because this bag is so large it can actually fit. But if I strapped it to the outside, I would have heaps of room left inside. I imagine you would be nearly spot on with your R value estimates. Most of these insulated inflated pads work because the crossed mylar layers, separate the warm air from you body and the cold air from the ground. Without that you’re basically just sleeping on a sheet of Mylar which I’ve done before and it’s nowhere close to being as warm as an inflated pad 👍. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment! All the best.

I had packed for a snow camp but didn't quite trust myself at the last moment - I'd not solo camped in snow before and was put off by the length of the night... also had a 3 season tent (Lanshan 2) so I think not staying up on my own was probably the right call. So very well done. Another hill and climbing challenge so tastefully communicated for others to share in. Winter hills hike and camp - one of the Earth's great rewards. As super luxureous the Nammatji I think I would get all afraid about heating such a large space with body heat, but the freedom to truely move around in a tent as you say .... And thank you for ending with your LNT messaging - makes me feel good every time a channel does. Respects.
@GoingSoloOutdoors

I agree with the size of the Nammatj. The space is a real luxury but it makes much more sense for your body heat to warm a one man tent in the winter instead of a two man tent! I was plenty warm before bed but definitely a trade off when you’re in a small space for so many hours. With seeing people leave litter in the Peak District and all the drama in Dartmoor it’s more important than ever to promote LNT. Us wild campers want to hike up to a pristine spot more than anyone! We need to protect these places for everyone to enjoy! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! All the best
