Learned lots. 1) Great tip on the apolo neck guard. 2) great warning on chemical hand warmers underwater. 3) great idea on the gap for the chest area. Great video!

Oh yes! Smartwool makes some great products. They really last a long time, unlike some other merino products. Great choice!

… These are the best tips for exposure gear in cold water I’ve ever heard by far. You mentioned things that I hadn’t even thought about! That’s for the ikea bag tip!

Thanks for the tips I just got notified that the dry suit I ordered in July just arrived at my LDS today so I am looking forward to learning the ins and outs of diving dry. And also really looking forward to extending the season through the winter months.

Glad I never tried the hand warmers. It had crossed my mind. Makes sense the increased PO2 causes the increased chemical reaction. Thanks for the hints. I never thought I’d dove dry/cold, but your book has peaked my curiosity enough to make the move to dive dry.

@@JillHeinerth I grew up in Bonaire, so I was never a fan of being cold. Anything colder than 79F was no fun 🤣 Lucky for me I’ve got a great cave instructor here in Dallas that’s gona set me up right.

I don't personally dive (at least not yet) but you're a huge inspiration for me, going from such a casual boring job to "diving through the veins of mother earth". Hopefully I'll be able to use these tips one day!

So which is better for a base layer: J2 or a quality Merino base layer? I’m loving your Into the Planet book, excellent read. I have FE Arctics and will be getting the Halo AR when it is released. I live in Oregon, USA so a lot of River, lake, and ocean dives. Thank for any input you can provide.

Hello Jill. What a great video and information. I live in Fairbanks Alaska. I love to Ice dive here and do some Scientific Diving in Homer Alaska. Now that I have my own Drysuit (shell type) and my warm "bunny suit", I am still trying to keep my hands warm. I do have the dry gloves, but after a few mins in Arctic waters they stiffen up and get really cold. I have been looking into the Santi heated gloves (and possible vest) but don't want to deal with all the wires and battery pack. What would be a good solution to this problem?

Hi Dusty, Yes, the Santi heated gloves are great, but the wires and battery pack can be a bit cumbersome. If you wear the right glove liners you may be comfortable enough. I like wearing the Fourth Element undergloves which are essentially a short wristed neoprene glove. If it gets wet, you still have comfort. A wool liner or merino or alpaca add a toasty layer for longer dives. Just stay away from anything with cotton or synthetics. They won't be as warm as good wool.

12:50 absolutely great reminders how temperatures can affect our decompression and DCS risk. Have come across this point in several recent tech diving discussions presented on KZbin about human dive physiology by our industry leaders and subject mater experts. Once again taking every advantage we can to maximize our coexistencein in the underwater aqua sphere. 🤿😀🤙

Your opinion on wrist seals with dry gloves? I'm using silicone wrist seals and thin string under those for equalization purpose, but I'm thinking of cutting the seals to get more warm air moving to my fingers.
@JillHeinerth
@JillHeinerth 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer keeping the seals intact. The consequences of a glove leak can be catastrophic if you have no wrist seals and I find that gloves leaks are rather common.
