I often get asked how I stay warm when diving in Arctic areas like Norway, Iceland & Finland. In this video I quickly run through some tips I've learned over the past few years as I transitioned from a tropical Australian diver to a frozen European diver.

Here's another good tip from us crazy Danes that like to dive when the water approaches freezing temps: 10 minutes before you go in, wash your hands in the cold water, and splash some on your face as well. Then do a couple of good jumpingjacks or similar fullbody exercises to get the blood rolling. This helps with circulation in the peripheries in my experience. Water is now 3 degrees celsius here, just shot myself a nice cod for dinner yesterday :)

Dan thank you for all that you do for the sport of spearfishing and freediving! I truly enjoy watching your videos from the Great Lakes of Michigan. Right now my dive buddy and I are going to order our first Polo Sub suit based on your recommendations. Our water temps in the winter are 0-2 on average. Would you say the 9.5mm would be best or go up to the 11.5mm? Thank you for any guidance you can offer. We will be using them for spearfishing here in the winter months.

Being from norway and being used to diving in 0-2°C i must say that the gloves should be put inside the arms of your suit. Same goes for socks, i couldn't see how you'd done those. With a 3mm singlet, 3mm suit, 5mm 5-finger gloves and 7mm socks i do icediving for 1-2hours during winter before getting cold ;) - socks and gloves on the inside of the suit og i wear the singlet under the pants-waist.

Diving in Northern New England is always cold. Hypothermia tends to sneak up on you since its gradual. If your fingers stop moving like they should and or you start to get leg cramps, it is time to get out of the water.

You kinda hit it with the warm engine water but bringing hot water to poor in your suit before diving is a great trick to beat the cold. This way the first water to enter your suit is hot instead of freezing cold.

Does not sound good quality with your 9.5 wetsuit if you need some extra in 6 degree though. I got 7mm wetsuit, 5mm gloves and 7mm socks. It holds more than 2.5 hours in 1-2 degrees water. When i feel cold after that, i come up and use a bag of warm water to flush through my wet suit inside, take a rest and there could be another 1.5 hours.
@DanielMann
@DanielMann 5 жыл бұрын
Just extra on the socks and gloves as they are only 5mm. I dived alongside some icebergs in salt water around 0°C two weeks ago with my 9.5mm and no problems at all.
@Jayd3z
@Jayd3z 2 жыл бұрын
hey man, random question: I have a 7mm wetsuit and wearing 5mm socks for colder water. Should I wear the socks over the wetsuit or under? I didn't want to stretch out the foot holes of the wetsuit so I wore the socks over the wetsuit especially since the socks are pretty thick, but i kept getting water in the socks. Also do you wear the gloves over or under the wetsuit? Thanks!
@DanielMann
@DanielMann 2 жыл бұрын
I always wear socks under the wetsuit legs. When you swim forward they will fill up with water like you say. Not as important with the gloves and I find it really had to do with thicker suits. Also I often take my gloves on and off picking up cameras etc so impractical to do it all day.

You said to put a vest under your suit, does that make your suit overly tight? I was just wondering because I was looking into a 3mm vest to put under my well fitting 7mm suit and I didn’t want to spend the money if it’s probably going to constrict me.

I am diving in temps, 0 to 2 by celcius for years, i have a vest, i dont feel any difference with it, a proper suit does, new 7mm works for a year, 9mm for 3 years, wetsuits age fast, preasure reduse the thicness in time. Gloves 7mm and socks 9mm helps a lot :)

Depends on where you’re staying and where you fly from. I’ve done two trips from London and one was £600 the other cost me £1000. I’ve always brought along non perishable food from the U.K. as well to keep costs down as groceries tend to be pretty punchy in Scandinavia, especially in the Arctic circle where vegetables are grown in massive green houses.

Living in England obviously means I’m not going to be diving in Australia, 24hr flight and £700! I love diving all these new places in Europe. I’ve learnt so much and done things many people will never get the chance to do. If I was in Australia I’d be shooting the same fish as always and not learning new things. Australians often tell me to come home because the diving is better. Better is all relative. I’d rather shoot one halibut than one hundred Spanish mackerel because I’ve done that before. Each to their own!

@DanielMann

With a proper fitting wetsuit a thin layer of water will get in between your skin and the opencell, very thin. The body warms up this using the insulation of the neoprene and you stay warm. When you introduce more water say a pint from a big piss into the suit it sloshes around and removes heat from the body. My custom made suits let in very little water and that’s why they are warm.
