Huge bonus of three wheels. I used to very rarely ride my dual sport when it was somewhat slushy but I was young enough to catch a slide like a flat tracker, now there's just no way I could do that. The thing on two wheels though, ice is ice, unless you have studded tires, you will slide. Cold is just a matter of gear and now heated gear is so good, it's almost a non issue, but it's the ice patches that go with it. If you've never tried an electric vest and electric gloves, it's a luxury worth having since you are riding year round up there. The issue, even when very well sealed off is that from sitting still the heat eventually leeches out and you can wind up hypothermic without even realizing it. A means to generate a positive heat input to make up for that loss rate is very nice to have. I like your videos, nice job.

Thanks so much! I’m going to get through this winter without heated gear and see how it goes. My rides in cold weather are never for prolonged periods. Depending on how things go, I may add heated gear for next winter.

According to my phone app weather looks good in Tampa. 😎It was good to see just how well the Spyder handles in those wintery conditions. As long as you keep the speed down and light on the throttle I think you could get around most places. 🥶

You are a brave man to go out in those conditions! My wife got caught in a hail storm last year & said it wasn’t nice ! Ride safe , regards Stephen Alberta Canada.

Hail would be unimaginably bad on a motorcycle. I can’t imagine.

I would love to go riding my Sea to Sky on a day like this but, in Western PA the streets are fully salted. It’s a no go.

Thanks for sharing your ride in the cold. Looks like the Spyder does pretty well in winter weather. Have you found an under carriage washer yet?

No, I’m doing my best with a simple hose nozzle.

My guess on temperature is that it is slow to respond and the temperature in your garage was the starting point. When traffic lights are out the intersection becomes a 4 way stop. In high school I rode motorbike (100 cc) 3 miles round trip all year. To keep bike up would straddle with feet on the ground. Good video. Made me feel cold. How do heated seats and grips help with the ride?
@SpyderChrisYT2 күн бұрын
The heated grips are great, but the outside of the hand still gets cold. I did a video a while back about rigging handlebar muffs, like snowmobiles and adventure bikes use, but I need hand guards to get them to work. Something I’ll look into more closely at some point. The seat is great, too hot on high.

Do you wear anything in particular to avoid getting yourself dirty from the road sand and slush? I'm impressed on how you're making it work in winter! Cheers Chris!
@SpyderChrisYT2 күн бұрын
No special clothing for this ride, but there wasn’t really any slush to speak of. On another ride I wore ski pants, and on another I’ve worn rain gear, to keep my clothes in decent shape.

Do you worry about the long term impact of road salt on your ride? Or do they only use sand?
@SpyderChrisYT2 күн бұрын
It’s my biggest worry, as I’ve mentioned before. I’ll do my best to keep it clean, but I know I’ll have problems as the winter worsens.

Please start stopping at those intersections where the signals are not working so that you don't get hit by cross traffic that doesn't know they should stop. We want you to be around for a while! For this kind of weather, you are fortunate that you live in a flat place with straight roads. Even so, based on my experience going out on a Fall day with lots of wet leaves to experiment with the resulting significant lack of traction (something I would never do on my two wheel motorcycle), I was good as long as i could use the smooth throttle/brake/steering inputs that you emphasized. But if I had ever needed to make any sort of sudden correction in direction or speed, I would have been in trouble. Be careful out there. If your roads aren't salted, how is it that you had water on the road rather than ice? At those temps, I'd be worried about finding a section where that water had frozen into black ice. Regarding the thermometer. I agree with your thoughts that it should be hidden from view since it isn't the ambient air temp that we feel. It is the temp of the air going into the engine as measured near the engine and seems to be affected by the Spyder's engine and speed. The only time I might want to know about it, is when it approaching 120+ degrees because at something a little above that (maybe 122-124 - nobody has ever given a definite answer), the machine can allegedly shut down because the computer can't correctly calculate the air/fuel ratio needed for continued operation. Of course, given that it reads several degrees higher than the ambient air temp, that would mean I'm riding in somewhere around 115 degrees. Been there, done that, won't do it again. All of which to say is ignore the Spyder's thermometer. Or, on a normal riding day, just subtract 7-8 degrees from what it reads and assume you are close. Even then, remember that because of its location, it will not respond to rapid changes in actual air temp. Sorry for the long paragraph. I've ranted about this many times. Hide it. Or maybe change it to a gauge of some sort like the water temp. And then give us a real thermometer for the ambient air temp like on 4 wheel vehicles and other touring motorcycles like a Gold Wing have. And as mentioned before, even a phone or GPS air temp (at least on my Garmin Zumo 395) are only as good as the last location/city from which they can get a reading. That could be a long ways from where I currently am riding. End of rant. Thanks for the video. Keep 'em coming.
