IMO Rally cars are the worlds true "Super-cars". I love seeing him running such a "stock" looking car with a dam near full interior and a REAL stick, not a sequential box. Looks nothing like a modern WRC car inside and to me, it's way more badass. All Rally is good rally, but I'm glad I was fortunate enough to get to experience both Group B and the Tomi Makkinen/Colin Macrae years first hand.
@extropy18 жыл бұрын
You're both completely correct, I couldn't agree more! For me, rallying started to die when Colin and Richard lost their lives. The cars these days are just so boring and easy compared to the cars of yesteryear
@pulafun7 жыл бұрын
yet they're quite much quicker and more agile than never before - they're also more demanding from the driver physicality also. It was fun with the H shifter, but come on - the quicker shifting and faster driving today - it's bloody ridiculous today compared to yesteryear
@richardkocksworthy84237 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Subaru actually pioneered flappy paddles but Colin often didn't like using them because of reliability issues. Later they were used on Subaru Wrc cars full time.
@SqubaSquid6 жыл бұрын
Nor Wester Nor Wester That's why I love rally and Colin is one of the reasons why I've always loved Subarus. But to me rally drivers are the most skilled racing drivers. Perfect example is Mark Higgins and the incident at the bottom of Bray Hill during the Isle of Man in the 2011 wrx STI. I feel only a rally driver would've been able to make that save after bottoming out in a stock suspension car at 150 mph on a narrow village road. If you make a mistake in rally, that's usually game over. Flying through forests and tiny roads with sheer cliffs on the sides while pushing as hard as possible is why they have all my respect.
@seanpaul935 жыл бұрын
big time, i love f1 but rally is not only putting yourself in danger but your partner too. also obviously both need to know the tracks but if you fuck up on a rally track you're potentially rolling the vehicle over a cliff or running into the crowd

Ok I just heard it from Mr. Grist himself, "Line" is a late apex entry into a corner, "plus" or "minus" is a correction requested by the driver on the fly from an earlier pass on the stage, either faster or slower on that pacenote.
@bossboyritchno12878 жыл бұрын
He's shifting like that because it's a clutchless shift box!!! No need to clutch up or down the gears, you only need the clutch in first to launch the fucker!!! Amazing gearbox and was way more reliable than the paddle shift they eventually put in that car!!! Even In 1998 the car had the new cutting edge triple active diffs with this same gearbox! And on monte 99! RIP Colin McRae

@rendezvous6515 жыл бұрын
Actually it's an H pattern gearbox but it's a dog box which allows you to not to use the clutch while shifting. Only on road sections and 1st gear do they need it. Subaru could've had a sequential gear box but waited until 1999. Then they launched a semi automatic fly by wire one. It's a high pressure system that uses the standard H pattern layout but it uses a paddle shifter. They call it the dogs bollocks.

But these gearboxes are called dog-boxes which allow clutchless shifting as long as you take your foot off the throttle...you dont use the clutch anymore after the moment that you start the stage...just on a few hairpins...and the gear lever is very fast and soft due to the lack of synchros. But you got a point, compared to clutchless, automatic vehicles this is definitely the real deal ;) but rally cars still have clutch pedals nowadays

Tire and fuel issues are a common thing in endurance racing; and it used to be the same in F1 before 1994. Ayrton Senna ran out of fuel, ditto Jim Clark and Jack Brabham, and so on. You don't have inboard sensors in the COT, and strategy is also very dependent on cautions. If the Excel spreadsheet show an average of X amount of cautions at racetrack A, but a fluke occurs and there's X-2 cautions, you than have a problem. Some NASCAR engineers worked in F1 and/or other sports before.
