Today I was in Walmart and in the movie section, and I saw “The Fall” on the shelf. Flipped the box over and literally spasmed and squealed right there in the aisle at the picture of Colin on it. I don’t think it’s just you, not at all.

Anybody else notice that interviews where there's a lot of people he's a little more subdued and apprehensive (or quieter) but when he's in an interview like this one where it's more one on one he's a bit more animated and confident?

Looking at body language, I only partially agree: +Notice the DATES which those interviews happen. The newer they are (post-Merlin), the more likely you are going to see calmer, confident body language. +I suspect that somewhere towards the end of Merlin, he was working with an Acting Coach for another role and they taught him to change his body language. Which he has kept working on. +In interviews with other people, usually Merlin cast due to the time frame, he is more subdued and apprehensive/quieter due to his EXTREME submissive body language. +Now, that kind of extreme submissive behavior doesn't come from being a shy person. The kind he used to give off (well, he still gives some of it away, just differently now) is the kind someone has when they've gone through a LOT of trauma as a child. In America, one might suspect long-term child physical child abuse. But since he grew up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles (in Armagh, one of the worst areas).... +It's easy to see how growing up in a constant war zone affected him. Imagine what it's like to keep your head down all your life, for fear that someone will kill you or your family. +In more present day interviews, he has had time to work on that body language and come off as confident. +He actually has an animated personality, which still leaked through in some older interviews (both by himself and with others) and was visible in old Merlin BTS, when he interacted with other cast/crew - despite the overwhelmingly submissive postures. +Now, in the few current interviews with non-Merlin actors, he interacts in a more confident way. You may still see some subdued/refraining from speaking, but that is normal for healthy people when sharing attention with others. Even highly animated Jennifer Lawrence subdues more when she has to share an interview. ++P.S. Upon further review, in this particular interview they have him (literally) backed up against lockers and the camera pretty close to his body! One of those things might be fine, but both pin him in physically. He has no "exit" to escape. If you watch, the camera is low but close. He often makes movements going backwards and up. Either just his head will do that or his entire body will. He does care about what he is saying though, and occasionally leans forward w/ his forehead to the interviewer- driving the point home. +Actually, I did catch a submissive gesture to the interviewer. But overall, he's much better.

Sorry, I was not realizing that I was writting in French in my previous message. One thing you said has touched me: the unconscious behaviour of people under pressure of war, or a similar situation, specially since the childhood. So much fear and maybe suffering in adults and in children. It is sad. And in the case of wellknown people, we see them far away, in the firmament of TV Stars, and we don´t often realize that sometimes, there has been pain, fear and suffering in their lives, behind their beautiful faces.
