I think FFVIII's Junction system is deeper then FFVI's Esper system. The system is so deep you can complete the game without using Draw except for getting some GFs that are required like Siren. Siren has Card Mod which lets you convert cards to spells or items. There's also an ability to convert items to magic and vice-versa. Then you Junction all this magic onto your characters to make them super powerful without even levelling up. And since the monster's levels scale with you, it's sometimes a benefit to not level up. The weapon level up system is also tied into all this because you get new weapons by using all those items you used the GF abilities on to convert magic, monsters and cards into. It's all tied together. Fantastic system, fantastic game, an extremely underrated entry in the FF franchise.

I agree. It seems like it might just have to do with where Colin is at in life right now. When he was a kid and had all the time in the world, he loved diving head-first into challenging games and mastering them, but now he doesn't have a lot of time to devote to that kind of thing. Perhaps if he was retired and living out his fantasy of having all the time in the world then he'd be able to get into From's games.

As a gamer who is a bit older than these guys I think they are pretty spot on regarding the classics. However it seems due to their jobs they don't really have the time to appreciate many games that don't give you a classically derived gameplay loop within 5 minutes of playing the game, especially Colin. I have been there, beat that too so rehashing the playground gamer days doesn't do much for me. Also I am a SMB3 > SMW guy since SMW just took what 3 did and made it better but 3 moved Mario forward more than World.

I played Wild Arms on the Vita last year, based partially on Colin's recommendation, and the fact that I like oldschool RPGs...I beat it, but didn't really think it was that good. I've also heard a lot of great things from a friend, and actually bought the first one and the second one on a PSN sale, but I've yet to play them. Colin's talk about it made me more interested in the trying it. Related to how final Fantasy VII cast a shadow over other great jRPGs of the time, made me think of Suikoden 2, so awesome!
