I agree so much. There was only one negative thing about scottie in the last dance - that he said he'd do it again. I could live with the 1.8 decision, I can even live with the fact he said he'd do it again. I didn't like it, but.. Meh. But calling Phil a racist? It's childish. This is a grown man. Scottie was the great middle-man on the Bulls. He may have gotten a block or steal followed immediately by an assist to Jordan. He kept the flow going down the floor on offense with surprises for the opposing team on defense. He was an all-star player of the game. He was on the "Dream Team." He earned the six rings with MJ. @Not Robot I do not disagree with you about Cornbread Maxwell. But after 1981, the Celtics more than had their hands full. They could not stop Andrew Toney. Danny Ainge had mentioned during an interview that he would lose sleep about guarding Toney. Toney was the only player Ainge truly feared. DJ being that one more defender made a difference with the Celtics winning it all in 1984 & '86. I also heard Bird and Maxwell had a bit of a falling out with each other after the 1985 NBA Finals. Again, you are correct about Maxwell. He was a great Celtic often overlooked during the Celtics dynasty.

For real. I've seen so many people claim that Scottie has the opportunity to be as great as Mike on the offensive end and I am like, what? That's how I know they've only watched the highlights. Scottie was so limited offensively but was great on the defensive end. He was never consistent on the offense which is one of the reasons Phil drew up a play for Kukoc. Scottie had also butchered the previous 2 plays where he came up with nothing with the balls. Scottie may be underappreciated, but he's certainly overrated. Pippen was a GREAT player, but anyone who watched the NBA or The Bulls in the 80's & 90's knows that Pippen was never a closer. The Bulls had a plethora of sharpshooters during that period so if Jordan wasn't open for the last shot, it was usually passed off to one of their sharpshooters but never Pippen. They had players like Craig Hodges, Steve Kerr, Jon Paxson, BJ Armstrong, Toni Kukoc, Ron Harper, these dudes were deadeye shooters & a big part of the reason the Bulls were so deadly as a team. Pippen was never even option 2 on game ending plays, he was like option 4 or 5 every time... for a reason. Pippen was NOT a Closer or a Leader.

@@toddsands6000 I was talking more in the context of last second shots or game winning shots. I remember that game, I wouldn't say he closed it out though. He didn't hit a game winning shot or last second shot to get the win. Pippen was always on display defensively and that game was no different. But the Bulls were winning the whole 4th quarter of that game. Pippen did hit 3 big shots in the last 4 - 5 minutes, but he bricked every shot up until that point in the 4th quarter. Paxson also hit several big shots and Grant actually hit the last shot to close out the win. Jordan had one of the coldest 4th quarters of his career that game and they almost lost that game because of it. I would say that a combination of Paxson, Pippen & Grant is what closed out the game for the win. Been saying that for a couple decades. I came across it by accident, an old magazine had top 50 players and I folded the page to try an guess the names just by stats.....it became obvious one set of numbers just didn't belong in the top 50, it was pippenz so than I jumped on good old windows 95 and researched the h3ll out of pippen and realized he was just a good player with a history of bad decisions. Winning and mj absorbed a lot of it for him. He wasn't a cancer, but he was cancerous on any team Mike wasn't a part of. And his stats were always just meteocre.

I think he might have been saying it made him better than he otherwise would have been. Not many overrate him. Most fairly rate him as one of the best of all time. But he wouldn't have been that without playing next to MJ.

100% I mean if we just look at 1 aspect - passing. MJ is a better passer than Pippen. Yep. Clear as day. Did Ouppen average more assists than MJ at times? Yes..... I wonder how....... if I were passing the ball to fucking Michael Jordan i would average a few assists too!! Pippen was a good player a terrific defender but there’s a reason why he is referred to as “the best number 2 all time” because he wasn’t a number 1 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

This was a good interview and Sam Smith knows the Bulls - certainly the early 1990s Bulls - very well. And much of his analysis of Pip is spot on. He also makes some cogent comments about the Last Dance - especially the part in which Jordan insisted he wanted to run it back again. It was well documented at the time that he said he was done. Phil was going to have hip replacement surgery and said he needed at least a year off do it. And the Bulls weren't going to give Pip a mega deal because he was past his prime and on the decline. So there is quite a bit of revisionist history in the LD. Agree that the organization should have handled it better and Krause should have known that it would be next to impossible to recruit star players if the perception was that they ran the GOAT out of town. But the depiction in the LD of how it ended was one sided - predictably - and Krause, of course, was not around to defend himself. Also, I would like to have seen more about the 1993/94 Bulls season, which was the first year without MJ. They played so well and that was Pip's finest season. His leadership on full display - the good and the bad (mostly good, though). That team defied expectations even if it came up short. But the Last Dance was produced by Michael and was going to reflect how he saw things. And Pip had ample opportunity to address the 1.8 seconds, but instead he insisted he would sit out again. He also signed a bad contract - a contract that the Bulls told him not to sign, but he insisted. Yet, another self inflicted wound. So I understand his frustration boiling over these days because the exposure has laid bare many of the missed opportunities for Pip. But his behaviour is so sad because the selfishness on display is the exact opposite of the characteristics that everyone who played significant time with Pip said made him a special teammate.

For me, Pippen's career and legacy are what they are because of the Bulls and Jordan. Unfortunately for Scottie, that situation was a real source of aggravation for him at the same time. But I find it difficult to imagine a better team situation for someone of Pippen's skillset. Wallace missed 6 of the 13 consecutive misses that Portland had to help the Lakers storm a comeback in game 7. Had Portland won this game, Scottie makes the finals without MJ and with a team of no superstars, demoralizing Shaq's sole MVP year. Bad coaching in the second half by Portland. Why Wallace kept shooting and furthermore not benched is a mystery. Many players crumbled that second half. Pippen was still doing the all-around things he's good at, but the team was simply choking.

To Scottie's defense also, he was the main reason Portland crawled out of a 1-3 deficit against the Lakers. There are some great points on this board. I definitely agree that Scottie was a great player with a special skill set in his era. I have also thought he was somewhat overrated in a large scope(top 50 all-time, dreamteam). I think his skill set fit perfectly for the system that Phil ran, and to play alongside MJ. I think MJ was so great that once he a true #2 all star to play with that he would have eventually won chips. There is a question of would it have worked well enough to win 6 like with Scottie. I think the last dance did prove that without Pippen as a co-leader to balance MJ's abrasive leadership style things may have been different. He may have been the perfect player to pair with MJ. The 93-94 season proved that Pip was a great player and leader. The most disappointed I have ever been with Scottie is when he played for the Blazers in the 2000 wcf vs the Lakers. The Blazers had a 15 point lead going into the 4th qtr and Pip failed to lead the team. I'm not talking about scoring, but from a 6-time champ to calm the team down and show them how to finish. It always made me question if he would carry a legacy of greatness if not for playing with MJ and Phil.

People don't remember, but Scottie shot only 32.6% from 3P and 70.4% FT. He never shot 40% from 3P ever in his career. Even in his "Top 3 MVP candidate" season, he shot just 32% 3P and a terrible 66% FT. That's similar splits to Giannis. The Bulls did so well that year largely because BJ Armstrong and Horace Grant played their asses off and overachieved, with both having career years and both making the All-Star team for the only time in their careers.
@richardplantan4375
@richardplantan4375 2 жыл бұрын
Shooting 33% from 3 point range is equivalent to shooting 50% from 2 point range. Example. If you attempted 12 3 point shots and made 4 of them 33% you would score 12 points. If you took 12 2 pointers and made 6, 50% you would score 12 points. Shooting 33% from 3 point range is actually an excellent percentage. I believe Ray Alan shot 40% for his career and to expect Pippen to do that is unrealistic.
@back2back379
@back2back379 2 жыл бұрын
@@richardplantan4375 First of all, you're not taking into account actually taking enough 3P shots for the effectiveness of the eFG% to actually kick in. Scottie made 0.8 3 pointers/g for his career, so it's more like he attempted 2.5 3 point shots and made 0.8, not like he attempted 12 3 point shots like Steph Curry. Also, ranking whether you're a good 3P shooter or not is relative to other NBA players and other shooters and what they shoot from 3P, so no, 32.6% from 3 point range is not even close to being an excellent percentage. Scottie also was below league average in 3P% in 15 out of his 17 seasons, so no, there's nothing excellent about his career 32.6% from 3P.

If Scottie didn't play next to Michael Jordan, we would be talking about Pippen as much as we talk about Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, and every other really good player from the 90s. Which is barely at all. You can't play in the shadow of greatness and complain you're not getting enough light. Scottie had a chance to break out on his own and what did he do? played the entitled brat because he wasn't chosen to take a game winning shot, then he went to Portland where he didn't make a finals, and went to Houston where he didn't make a finals. You're a top 50 player in the league, hall of famer, etc. etc. and he's still whining about not getting enough attention.

Never liked him, he's two-faced. Notice the jealous look on his face whenever Jordan takes the limelight of hitting winning shots. He got his chance to be a star in Houston, didn't blend well, because he tried to be in a position of leadership that's two-faced in nature. He took snipes on Jordan when Lebron is discussed. Pippen burned bridges and thankfully he did it on his own. Same thing happened to Kobe with regards to Shaq. But Kobe led the Lakers legit and end up getting well with Shaq in his post years. Pippen overestimated himself, overrated. Prime healthy Kobe Bryant, Grant Hill ate his ass alive. And he was not even the top dog of the second 'dream team', that was, if he believed Jordan was #1 and he was #2 overall those times. He's furious The Last Dance unmasked his two-face persona.

I agree with everything said in this interview except one thing. Scottie Pippen was always going to be a top 50 player wherever he went. I’m glad they mentioned he was a towel guy his freshman year and rose to top 5 pick. That says all I need to know about Scottie Pippen right there. The notion that Jordan made Pippen is a false notion. Pippen made Pippen and Jordan and Pippen were never close enough for either to make the other. They functioned at a high level and they were very fortunate to play with each other with that chemistry amd we were very fortunate to have witnessed it. No matter how this shakes up these guys made my childhood and I think both Micheal and Scottie were the Chicago Bulls everything else was interchangeable except them.
