I am 23 now and I absolutely love Revenge of the Sith, if I could only pick one movie to watch for the rest of my life I would watch Revenge of the Sith. I understand that the movie is a bit of a mess but to me there is no better lore and world then Star Wars at this point in time and I absolutely love it.

This video helped me to understand not just why people form your generation don’t like the prequels but also why my generation don’t like the sequels. It’s all about expectations. You had time to have set expectations on how Vader came to be, I didn’t watch the original trilogy till I saw episode 3. Like wise my generation had time to get excited for what came after episode 6, only to have our expectations squandered. Younger audiences watched the sequels right after watching the other films, they had no time to expect anything else!

It's so sad that there is a connective tissue called Clone Wars Show(CGI one) between Episode II & III and that it was mentioned so little here. Understandable given that they probably haven't seen it, and that they just want to focus on the movie itself and judge it by its own merits. Indeed the movie it's mediocre and has a bunch of padding, but I personally like it! However, The Clone Wars show imo adds a lot of context to the movies and now I see the prequels in a different light, so hopefully one day they'll get to see it!

Your criticism of the prequels is accurate enough, but it's weird how hypocritical you are towards the same critiques towards the original trilogy. It's not even that you don't address them, you just make them out to be the opposite in the original trilogy. How are you going to pretend like 90% of the original trilogy battles aren't also just cannon fodder toys mashing into faceless toys? That said I'm not surprised yall were so harsh on episode 3, despite it being one of my favorites of the series. Episode 3 is a prequel ass movie. There's no hidden potential or hidden paths that they might have alluded to, it's just what it wants to be at face value.

@Dagan, Leia in the original trilogy doesn't know she's adopted. She's Leia Organa when we meet her, the mother she refers to as knowing as a child is the wife of Senator Organa. It's not retconned that she was talking about Padme in the OT, we just don't know in A New Hope that she's actually a Skywalker.
@plo617
@plo617 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, when Luke says "Do you remember your mother?" He emphasizes "Your real mother" right afterwards. However, her remembering Padme could've been (being the offspring of Anakin) some latent Jedi ability to recall the images and feelings that she saw/felt right before Padme died.

There is certainly an age divide between the fans of each trilogy. I feel most of the older crowd will stick with the original trilogy and in 7-8 years from now I'm sure we will see a rise in more sequel trilogy fans. I'm 22 and ROTS has always been my favorite of the saga, and all of my friends who like Star Wars very much love the prequels as well.

One thing people don’t seem to understand about the prequels is Lucas’s intent when it comes to the dialogue and acting. He was trying to replicate the sensibilities common in old Hollywood so the performance styles are more theatrical and the dialogue more melodramatic. Hayden Christianson is going for a James Dean like angst. There’s even shots directly lifted from John Ford films of the era. Not to mention the 50’s diner and teen love story. It makes sense as the original trilogy despite its many influences from pulpy adventure serials was very much steeped in the new Hollywood sensibilities it was born out of. Naturally the prequels would try to reflect something that proceeded that. The look of the prequels is also something I don’t think people view through the right lens to truly appreciate. These movies were leaning into digital artifice. Films like Speed Racer and Sin City would take further advantage of this. It’s the juxtaposition between the very real physical people and the obvious illusion around them that gives the films their own unique aesthetic that makes them distinct from the original trilogy. They’re like a doorway into the past and the future at the same time in terms of their visual and tonal presentation which is appropriate as they were released at the turn of the century, it makes sense then to be looking back and look forward. It’s not rewriting history to act like there’s any merit to the prequels, there’s been plenty of intellectual film critics who’ve written pretty compelling positive work on them. I doubt anyone will be doing that with the sequel trilogy in a decade. The Disney films are functionally cinematic tracing. They give off the facade of competency and while enjoyable on a surface level glance don’t offer anything new. I don’t mean to take away from anyones enjoyment of those but there’s very little heart in them. They’re soulless corporate produces and yes some people involved did care and tried really hard but the surrounding context in which they were made tended to make the execution a failure. I think maybe some kids will grow up and have fond memories of them but they won’t get that same reevaluation because there’s no central artist behind them injecting them with interesting concepts and ideas. There’s frankly just not enough to analyze in those films. They’re exactly what they appear to be on the surface. Even if you still hate the prequels they’re significantly more interesting to talk about.

I know you boys have done your idea of what the sequel trilogy would have been but Colin talking about how Maul should have been the villain for the trilogy made me want this from your two for the prequels too. No worries if you are not feeling that.

I like the prequels since they’re the ones I grew up with, but I fully realize that they’re really not good movies (they have highs but plenty of lows as well). Still, I enjoy them for what they are nonetheless. I think there’s a lesson to be learned for not only Star Wars fans, but fandoms as a whole: you can love something while simultaneously accepting said thing’s flaws. Something I like about the prequels: I think Lucas really nailed the feeling of a Greek tragedy with those 3 films.

Sure the dialogue can be consistently cringe and meme-worthy. But something not touched on here is the subtle displays of character arc from Anakin’s beginning to his end as darth Vader. It’s a miracle that through his entire life he was considered an outcast and dealt with constant loss that was out of his power even though he is told he has the potential to do anything, and still have some sort of light in him even in his fall as Vader. His story alone considering all of the extended lore is always the most outstanding and poetic piece of Star Wars lore to me. I think revenge of the sith and Haden’s role in it can be seen as divisive but I think he had very subtle and convincing ways of showing he’s constantly torn on the inside. When you focus more on his subtle aspects, it gives the film a lot more depth.

Something people don´t seem to notice is that the original STARWARS, the 70´s movie was like., The Never Ending Story or something., was really a kinda childish movie., also was not new, there were several movies like it., and after starwars there were several movies like it., i think the "turning point" was the second movie but that one didn´t had George Lucas as a director., Lucas did American Graffiti and he was very involved with Spielberg, and spielberg also always have that "childish almost Disney" touch to it´s movies even something like Forest Gump has like a touch or filther of "familiy stuff", the "remakes" of the old trilogy that Lucas made in the 90s for example reflects Lucas mind, he always saw Starwars as something like "willow" or something., like a children´s fantasy movie series but in space.,but when other people touched starwars the interpretation was different., in Phantom Menace you can see Lucas making again a children´s movie and of course people didn´t get it., and on the other two he kinda was forced to make it more "serious" and action based so he almost cut Jar jar for example., so at the end of the day, people didn´t get Lucas and had other interpretations of Starwars, maybe new stuff must be made and let starwars be what it really is., an 80s movie series

I didn’t like this movie that much before I saw The Clone Wars (2008 series). But that show fleshed out every single aspect of this movie that once you get to it after watching the show, it just feels like a live-action (well, kinda LOL) finale. Yes there’s still dumb things in the movie but it’s much easier to just laugh at them and move on when the show did all the heavy lifting in terms of story to make this movie actually feel like a meaningful payoff.

I always find the different prequel experiences based on age interesting. I’m 25 and while I remember loving episodes 1-3 on early watches as a kid, I like them progressively less each time I rewatch. I tend to side with Colin where I don’t like many world and character choices, to me even the world design feels plain at times compared to the originals (although mustafar has some great spots). While 3 is undoubtedly the best of the prequels in my eyes I can’t get behind thinking any of them are good movies. Alas, I’m happy there are others out there that enjoy them

There are only 2 legitimately good Star Wars movies (Empire & Jedi), but Revenge of the Sith, to me, is clearly the best of the prequels. I would even put it ahead of A New Hope, from a strictly entertainment perspective. It's the 3rd act of a trilogy. All the important shit happens here: Anakin's turn, Palpatine's reveal, Order 66, the Jedi in exile... Almost nothing of consequence occurs in either 1 or 2, aside from just meeting Anakin. At least 3 gave us SOMETHING to care about, even if it isn't the most well executed. There are still emotional elements here that don't exist with any of the other two.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 really really enhanced this movie for me and makes the payoff of order 66 huge. You really get to see the Jedi for what they truly are in that game. People go on and on about how arrogant and dogmatic they were, but at the end of the day they were really just cowards. I recommend watching "you were afraid" on youtube to see what I'm talking about. You're right that opinions on this movie are a generational divide, but it is more than just that though. As a kid I didn't hate Jar-Jar until I was told to hate him by a lot of the fans of the OT. Looking at them again now as I am older, I dislike Jar-Jar, but love the Gungans. I don't like the Ewoks because jumping back and forth between the death star scenes and the teddy bears ruins the tone for me. I am sure I would feel differently if I watched it when I was a kid. I always had a soft spot for episode I myself, i wish they had carried more over from it into ep 3, especially with the cgi effects that aged horribly, ep1 had a good bit of practically to feel real and nostalgic. Overall it just felt like a part 2 to clones and everything felt crammed in like the harry potter films where they jump from scene to scene but at least with those we have the books to fill in the blanks. In some ways, the best of the prequels, but in more ways, the worst. The production design and art direction in particular are atrocious. Grevious’s ship and some of the planets in the Order 66 montage felt like they were from some tv b-movie. And Dagan said it right when he said it’s like Rise of Skywalker. Before the third movie, there’s still hope that they’ll stick the landing, but it falls way short, and with the most important moments of the story.

I mean surely your not surprised they didn't like it? Did you even watch the previous videos? If not why are you here? Not everyone needs to have the same opinion as you for you to enjoy the content. I love revenge of the sith, it's probably my 1st or 2nd favourite star wars movie. Yet I still like hearing there opinions on it.

Look if can't laugh at them saying it felt 5 hours long then preceding to talk for another 2 hours, I'm not here. Firstly arguing semantics. Colin's turning 38 & Dagan's turning 49, but I couldn't possibly mean their* age at 43.5. So please do tell me I can't say "2 guys in their 40s". Secondly, bro you're assuming heaps about me. I have watched their* previous videos in the series so I'm not surprised. I am very capable of enjoying content I disagree with. I've been a fan of Colin since Podcast Beyond. It appears that you're a bigger Revenge of the Sith fan than me as it's my 4th favourite. So by all means rebuke me in the comment section. You're clearly correct mate, you got me. BTW Adults really should know where there/their* are applicable in sentences. If you're*/your gonna come at me at least do me the courtesy of spelling at a year 5 level. Cheers Deano

@@farmerdean3791 Damn you must be having a bad day, sorry I upset you dude. No one was "coming at you". If you're* going to be one of "those" people, at least check your* own grammar. You know....like your first sentence...."Look if can't laugh at them saying it felt 5 hours long then preceding to talk for another 2 hours, I'm not here". 👈 How does that make any sense? Anyway I hope you're* feeling better. Cheers Truth
