The Phantom Menace was the greatest disappointment since, well, anything, ever.
Peter Serafinowicz voiced Darth Maul in the film. He talks about his experiences, and that moment in the cinema when you realised the film was a total disaster.
This is taken from an interview with Richard Herring from his Leicester Square Theatre Podcast www.comedy.co.uk/podcasts/rich...

And now, after the sequel trilogy..... looking back - the Phantom Menace doesn't seem too bad, lol Not to defend it too much, because it certainly wasn't a patch on the original trilogy, but... At least it joined up, made some sort of sense, and didn't break in-universe "laws of physics" etc. Yeah, there might have been some boring bits about senates and trade disputes, but there were some good bits and I'll definitely take boring over bad.

Only bring them in when needed, be effective and then leave. And as the general rule: show don't tell. In general more they talk (especially about themselves), less menacing they feel. Same actually works with any character. E.g. if someone has seen Clint Eastwoods old westerns where he usually talks very little and is just effective. For people wondering years from now: As a young man in the 1970s, Liam Neeson had a "very dear friend" who was "brutally raped" by a black person. After that he "...went up and down areas with a cosh(stick or pipe), hoping...some ‘black bastard’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something... So that I could … kill him.” Later in the same interview he said "If she had said an Irish, Scot, or a Brit, or a Lithuanian - I know I would have felt the same way. I was trying to show honour and stand up for my dear friend in this terrible medieval fashion … It shocked me when I came down … Luckily, no violence occurred, thanks be to God.” www.theguardian.com/film/2019/feb/05/liam-neeson-says-he-is-not-a-racist-in-wake-of-rape-comments

Peter Serafinowicz is one of the most underrated comic actors of our time. His own sketch show was absolutely brilliant. He's so spot-on and honest, I love that someone is being candid about Lucas and how the guy just CANNOT direct actors. Every film he actually "directs," his actors are totally lost, just 'saying' lines because of the horrible direction - "Um, just bigger, louder," or random, generic direction. Watch the making of Attack of the Clones where he just keep repeating the same direction and the actors kinda shrug their shoulders. I'm glad someone finally put their name to it and was honest, publicly.

@al112v4

+Will Brock I don't hate them neither, I do enjoy the Clone Wars cartoon that came out from those movies, 2D & 3D versions. If we compare them with TFA isn't a fair comparison to be honest, because I remember how people were disappointed by TPM because it wasn't like the original movies, and then we have TFA, a clearly homage to the original Star Wars movie, and yet people complain that it is too similar. People are never happy, that's why I don't listen to certain opinions that really don't say anything but whining and bitching. With that said, TFA is another movie that is clearly far from being flawless and I understand the complains here, I do, like Rogue One wich it tried to be more realistic and it's fine, but characters there are more empty than in TFA, that's for sure, at least for me.

From their release up until around 2015, the general consensus seemed to be that they were bad movies. But then, after the newer ones started to come out, all the kids who grew up with the prequels and were now old enough to make their voices heard online started to reevaluate them with nostalgia goggles, and the overall narrative started to shift.
@BareBandSubscription

@@shelbyvillerules9962 Exactly spot on. In 10 to 15 years time, the discourse will inevitably shift again to elevate the new movies. Try telling a Star Wars fan that, though, and they’ll deny that inevitability all day like it didn’t already happen with the prequels, which are still the worst movies in that series anyway.

@@shelbyvillerules9962 If you only consume garbage you think that that's good. Young people think that Star Wars are supposed to be the bad movies from the prequels and not really well done films. His description of the lead up to the Phantom Menace sounds like the opposite of what happened before a New Hope. Everyone thought the Phantom Menace was going to be incredible, and then came out like crap, whereas the people working on a New Hope thought they were making SciFi garbage (based on the costumes and the sets), but it turned out to be a cultural cornerstone.

What happened to Lucas is the same as what happens to many leaders, business owners, and creative types when they become big and surrounded by sycophants and ass kissers - they lose all ability to judge, or have judged, the worth of their own ideas. They become adverse to any and all criticism and incapable of knowing shit when they see it. Luckily for us, a few people had the balls to stand up to Lucas when he wanted to include a child Han Solo in Episode 3.

+Derke73 People forget that George Lucas really only directed one good Star Wars movie, and that was the first one. Empire and Return were directed by other people and Empire is hands down the best of all six movies. Star Wars movies are better when Lucas isn't directing them, that's why I have so much faith in Episode 7.

+Fedzi "George Lucas really only directed one good Star Wars movie" Two good movies, ROTS being the other. The first one wasn't just good however, it was GREAT. "Empire is hands down the best of all six movies." Hands down? IV, if not on par, is certainly a very, very close second. Also I heard he directed some of the throne room stuff from VI, i.e. that part of the movie that was as good as Empire - but don't quote me on that, just what I've heard.

+Derke73 Well, Lucas, at least, stuck with the lessons he had been given. He wrote about what he knew. He wrote the original trilogy after watching tons of old serials, Kurosawa samurai films and classic Hollywood adventure movies. Later, he spent 15 years negotiating deals for Lucasfilm, and turning ILM into a major SFX company. And he makes a trilogy about trade negotiations.

I think it's true, he was also surrounded by jaleous and envious people who wanted to steal Star Wars away from him, eventually will encourage him with bad ideas instead of warning him. I'm thinking Speilberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Bob Iger. They definitely plotted against him and succeeded in stealing Lucasfilm by lying to him. Now look at the movies they are making, the prequels are masterpieces next to Force Awakens. I'd love to hear Serafinowicz make a review of it.

But yes, Serafinowicz was VERY RIGHT at the time of this interview. Ahmed Best had to deal with a lot of hate and wasn't hired for many other roles... and I believe I read that he had suicidal thoughts on multiple occasions, or at least depression as caused by his involvement in the movie.

Jake Lloyd, yes. A number of star wars actors have said that they disliked being involved with the franchise. Most famously Harrison Ford. While he loved filming the Indiana Jones films and enthusiastically signed up for the new ones, he never really liked Star Wars and agreed to Force Awakens on the condition his character was killed off. Even Ewan McGregor said he didn't much like Phantom Menace, despite previously being a big Star Wars fan going into it.

I remember seeing the internet for the first time. It musta been like 97. I used to help my cousin with his paper round the owners of the shop were two hilarious Pakistani dudes called Shiv and Dill, young guys with a devilish sense of humour. They had just bought a pc and got internet hooked up and showed me the website they were looking at. It was some sorta bestgore type site and it was a video of two humongous sumo wrestlers both duel wielding tiny knives, like about the size of a dorito and shaped almost the same way in a triangle. They were locked together stabbing each other on the love handles, trails of blood coming out, stabbing so fast and furiously yet having little mutual effect. It was so funny because they were too fat their stomachs kept them apart to reach around and hit anything important and it looked like a couple walruses in some sorta ritual. Weird story but true
