As someone who grows a lot of food I try to really maximize the time my plants can stay in the ground, which will hopefully lead to a longer production cycle. But in some cases it also can lead to some fun and tasty creations. In the past whenever one of my leaf producing brassicas (collards, kale, cabbage, etc) had gone to seed and begun flowering I would pull it out to give room for the next crop. This normally makes sense because when a brassica begins flowering the leaves never get quite as big as they once did and the production will inevitably drop off. But I really didn't have any new plants to put in at the time, so I decided to leave my flowering collards in for the time being. And I am so glad I did! I decided to cut some of the flowers and stems off to allow more energy focussed on the leaves but was then left with a hand full of these florets. That is when I thought I would try taking them inside and steaming them like I would broccoli rabe. They were delicious, so much so that Dr Miller and I have been cutting florets almost every day to enjoy with our lunch or dinner. So if you have some collard or kale plants that are starting to flower, give this a shot and let me know what you think!

Hi Gabriel! My mom and I have been trying to find collard greens for her garden and we came across this video! To my understanding there are so many types of collard greens, yours is the closest to what my mom is looking for. By chance can you share what type of collard greens are those in the videos? And if you sell seeds?

@@PlantBasedGabriel Oh don't make me come down there. I may never want to come home. I love ur garden and green house. When I watch ur videos I feel like I've been on vacation; a to to ur neck of the woods would add another element to the experience. Ha ha.

I've been eating the flower heads from my curly kale, it starting flowering already in March! They are super tender but you do need to look close at the flower heads, I was shocked to find a cluster of aphids in there!

Yes! We have been eating some kale florets too, just not as much as I have been trimming them down to focus on pumping out leaves.

I've never grew collard before. But mines are past the florets, they are pretty tall yellow flowers. But I will cut them off now

Hi, I am new to gardening just noticed one stalk of my collards is sprouting a thick stem with heart shaped leaves and yellow bulbs in the middle. The others look like your standard collard leaves. Should the leaves look heart shaped? Also, will this larger stalk overwhelm my window box? Thank you

Depends on how hot of a spring we have. But normally when temps get in the 70's during day.
