@gerardblandina98443 ай бұрын
The way that Tom Cruise quickly dispatches the two thugs in the alley, is studied by police. It's a perfect instance of tactical draw. Vincent always shoots center mass, then to make sure the guy stays dead, he shoots in the head. The film points this out multiple times, especially during the train car scene between Max. The door blocked the bullets. Max fires wildly. The lights obscured Max from Vincent. Max got lucky with the lights.
@batbrick39493 ай бұрын
47:41 Note that Vincent’s shots were stopped by the metal door because he shot a tight center-of-mass group. Max, being less skilled, shot more wildly, through the glass, and got a lucky shot into Vincent.

@stefanhuddleston68163 ай бұрын
This scene also highlights some key thematic elements of the two characters. Vincent insulted Max earlier in the film for being a creature of habit and not being more spontaneous and willing to take risks. He suggests Max will never start his limo business because he stuck in a habitual rut. Yet, in the end, Vincent dies because of his own training (habit) of the Mozambique Drill, two to the chest, one to the head (which as you note all hit the center of the door). Meanwhile, Max's spontaneous and risky actions, masquerading as Vincent in the meeting, crashing the cab, shooting wildly in the subway car, are what end up saving the day. It's a brilliant scene.

Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx give two of their best performances of all time in this movie. I would love to see Tom Cruise play more roles as a villain like Vincent. There’s actually great behind-the-scenes features showing Tom Cruise on a shooting range training for this movie, and he is in fact THAT quick and THAT accurate with a gun, the actor who played Daniel (the jazz club target) said and I quote “Tom Cruise is a quick draw, if he had been around in the old west, he would have a lot of notches on his belt”. And Jamie Foxx perfectly portrays one of my favorite archetypes, an ordinary man put in extraordinary circumstances. And seeing his character evolve throughout the movie is absolutely beautiful. You can see why he was nominated for an Oscar for this. He didn’t win for this, but thankfully for playing Ray Charles in the movie Ray, at the exact same Oscar ceremony.

Lovely reaction - Michael Mann is like the Fred Astaire of urban action thrillers; he's famous for his meticulous planning, and yet his films have this giddily breezy quality that looks almost effortless; I think the contrast between Max and Vincent embodies these 2 sides of Mann himself - he had a great run thru the 80s and 90s - Thief; Manhunter; Last of the Mohicans; building up to 2 masterpieces w Heat and Insider - he faltered a bit w Ali, then re-emerged w Collateral, with Mann breaking new ground w the new digital filmmaking - since then he hasn't quite regained his balance - still an incredible record, and that's not even counting his watershed TV work - I think DePalma's Scarface has somehow embedded itself in Mann's DNA, starting w Miami Vice As one might imagine, Mann does the most amazing DVD commentaries - in this one he said Vincent's moments of humanity are actually like cracks in his facade, suggesting that Vincent himself might be starting to crack up in this role he's been playing - Cruise's other great anti-sympathetic performance is in Magnolia, which got him an Oscar nom - another movie w an action star giving a surprisingly great performance as a hitman cracking up is Matador w Pierce Brosnan, who also deserved an Oscar nom

I really enjoy the way LA becomes a character as the night rolls on, with more and more city shots, and the story of the MTA death comes back full circle. Jamie Foxx being over his head in a strange hostage situation isn't a new thing for him (see Held Up, with Sarah Paulson) but I love how he plays it here, starting cool with Jada, getting real scared of Vincent, then conquering his fear to come out on top. And now Annie has a man who had a lengthy interaction with a hitman who directly identified Felix as “the people who hired me”. There are dead bodies with the same bullet hole pattern that clearly ties them all to the same shooter, a dead body on a train, a thumb drive with the information about the targets, and the same man who spent the evening with the hitman literally received the thumb drive from the very person who is being indicted.
