I am trying beech tree seeds I usually plant conckers everywhere all round garden and forget about them and then boom popping up everywhere to annoyance of my dad don't think he realises take hundred years for tree, I germinated plumb seeds but left them too long in fridge IL have another go this year but opening plumb shells difficult , IV got tiny concker bonzi in pot

We all float down here *creepyclownmodeoff* On a serious note, some years the nuts are all empty shells, that's why they float. During a good year, only around half of the shells are empty

you collected so few to start with, try to get the ones with fresh looking casings that just fell off tree, easier to find that way , also Squirrels are very messy eaters and will drop a lot of good ones on the ground

There not going to sink k the minute you put them in. leave them 24 hrs in water. most will have sunk

Can you tell me when is the best time to collect the seed / nut / pod? I have a tremendous and beautiful purple beech at work and there are many on the ground now (July 2020). Not sure if they are too old and dehydrated. I gathered about 30 and they all float.

just check on them right now in Maryland they are falling so its October 12 right now
