Driving Sweets. Back in the day when seatbelt enforcement was just becoming a thing my grandparents were stopped in a queue as the police were doing spot checks. My granddad was eating a liquorice sherbert dip and simultaneously trying to put his seatbelt on. As he twisted around the sherbert went everywhere and he was covered in it. The policeman was in hysterics and told him to just go.

The budget cap is great. Mercedes did a bad job designing their car and shouldn't be forgiven just because they have money. In the Mercedes domination 2014-2016, Ferrari were spending crazy money and it didn't help them in those seasons so the budget cap isn't the problem. We just need to give them time, these regulations will be more effective the longer they stay stable. It's changing the regulations again that will make the Redbull car even stronger..

For an F1 season where one team is completely dominant, it was the most exciting it could possibly have been. Ignore the two cars that disappeared off in front and it was an incredible race.

I studied in Holland back in the 90s and I was in accommodation very close to the High speed police force head quarters in a place called Driebergen, where the Dutch traffic police used Porsche 911 Targas.. What a site it was to see them on the motorway.. No point trying to get away from them! The reason they opted for Targas was so they could gesture more easily to lorry drivers.. Dream job!! Brilliant podcast!!

I have a similar feeling about Piastri like I did with Vandoorne. Vandoorne was really quick in the junior racing series, and then he got handed one of the worst McLarens ever, and was left out on his own by the team next to one of the best drivers in history, then exiled to Formula E. Right now, Piastri is in a ghastly McLaren next to a faster teammate and will probably be left out to dry. It's very concerning for his future through no fault of his own.

I used to sell SD1's in my first Motor Industry guise. I drove them a lot and loved them dearly, but they were shit to be honest. The Police liked them to drive, but they were even worse than the Triumph 2.5 pi's they replaced (another 70's iconic Police car, along with the 60's Wolseley 6/110's). The car that the Police seem to remain most fond of (along with the Senator) is the T5 850 Volvo, which covered huge mileages. Glad to see the backing for the Cult's 'She sells Sanctuary'! I recommended that in episode 5. Fantastic episode again...I look forward to this every Friday.

A great episode gents. Haribo fangs and sour sparks all over the place here in Riyadh (and Switzerland where I was previously). Best munched whilst listening to ZZTop. Saudis have a sweet tooth… Liked the police car bit, I remember police protection units having unmarked Jetta VR6’s back in the day (boot good for weapon boxes). Best Jam Sandwich’s - the Droop Snoot RS2000, P6, Mk2 Jag and the SD1 #childhoodmemories Two car garage: Racing car - An Aston db5 lightweight race prepped; road car - A 1987 V8 Vantage (keep it in the family).

Another thoroughly entertaining episode. Always enjoy the variety of topics, the honest discussions and the broad knowledge of the eclectic team. The F1 discussion confirmed my suspicion this season will be a Red Bull walkover, sadly, lets hope the midfield puts on an entertaining show... The section on travel sweets was enlightening as someone who lives in Asia we just don’t see the Haribo selection available in Europe. Was really surprised no one mentioned Simpkins tinned travel sweets. For me as a child travelling in the 60’s in the back of my Dads Morris 1100 traveller (a design ahead of its time?) I always looked forward to reaching into the tin to select a sugar dusted fruit sweet.

Whilst us Brits have sampled haribos, barley sugars, fox's glacier mints, we thoroughly recommend 'Kopiko'. A dark sweet made from real coffee - rather than the usual chemical concoction - all the way from Thailand. These have kept us focussed on long drives for many years and are now available in the UK from large oriental supermarkets.

F1 - Really pleased for Alonso and would like to see him back on top and perhaps even another World Championship to his resume. 🏆 Police Cars - I'm a kid of the 80's, so for me the coolest Police cars were seeing Volvo T5's and the occasional Subaru Impreza Turbo from around my regions in the 90's. In the early 90's the Senator 3.0. 24v and Granada Scorpio's were popular on the motorways! Then in the 2000's and more recently seeing the Skoda Octavia vRS and BMW 330d and 530d's were pretty cool.🚔 Travel Sweets - Lemon Sherbets, a proper classic. And then those boiled sweets in a metal tin my Dad used to keep in the glove box. £350k 2 car garage - A 992 GTS for everyday and road trips and a 992 GT3 specifically for track days!

Great podcast as always, part of my Friday morning schedule now! On the subject of F1 I think you're spot on with the race last weekend in that it's Max's championship again. I've been an F1 fan since 2005 when I was 5 and Alonso has been my favourite driver ever since, so last weekend's race was brilliant for me, but if it wasn't for Fernando being back where he belongs I would have thought it was another dreary race with so little action at the front of the field it's embarrassing. This leads me to my question: do any of you watch IndyCar? I started watching IndyCar properly in 2017 and I was just mad that I hadn't started sooner, because it's without a doubt more exciting and enjoyable than F1 in every possible way. The IndyCar season kicked off last weekend also and I was on the edge of my seat the whole race, it was absolutely brilliant. More action in one race than there will be in this whole F1 season honestly, which is usually the case. I'd love to hear your views on this and if any of you watch it I'd love to hear some conversation on it. I think any motorsport fan should be watching it because you'll thank yourself and wonder how you've been missing it!! Cheers.

Two years ago a BMW X5 police car stopped outside my house and a policeman knocked on my door. When I opened the door, he politely introduced himself, saying he was from the Armed Response Unit. He stressed there was no issue what-so-ever and that he simply wanted to look at and ask about my Volvo V60 Polestar (parked outside), as he said the UK police loved their fast Volvos! True story - I still have the CCTV footage 😊

7:25 Piastri's "decision" that you guys keep referring to was not between an Alpine seat and a McLaren seat - when he made the call it was between "Maybe we'll put you in Williams for a couple years then recall you to Alpine, but there's no contract for that yet" and the McLaren seat. The Alpine seat was never contractually offered to Piastri until well after the McLaren deal was done. DeVries got shafted by not getting a stop so he was on old tires, and let's not forget Yuki is not a bad driver at all - certainly a more proven talent than Latifi whose the only other teammate reference we've had for Nyck. The AT looks a bit of a dog this year so I'm not really sure how much more we could expect from him with how the strategy played out.

What sort of person looks forward to listening on Sunday mornings (which is when I get through the podcast each week, before, after and occasionally just a little bit during church) to five middle-aged men go on about travel sweets for many minutes at a time? Me sort of person it turns out. Harris says “m’learned colleagues” as a joke but in fact that’s exactly what they are: learned in petrol-head topics, learned in language and raconteurage, and learned in being real men, full human beings open to all sorts of experience and emotion. For this Yank, it’s like flying from today’s America to Ireland from the east coast: a quick easy trip to a place inhabited by sane adults.

When I was living in Belgium, (I’m English) I organised a golfing Roadtrip to Kent. I gave a lift to a good friend who originated from Texas. When we arrived at Eurotunnel to his glee he found a liquorice selection, a kilo box. We waited to get on the train, travelled across and found our hotel in Kent, by which time he had consumed the entire box, didn’t offer me a single piece. He made my day when he announced his delight at finding liquorice at Eurotunnel and said, “I haven’t had it in years, I used to be addicted to it.” OMG.

@ChrisHarris...the coroner stated it was crankshaft bearing failure that ultimately caused the catastrophic engine failure and subsequent oil dump and engine fire therefore loss of control at over 100mph. Whether bearing starvation was caused by an overheating turbo carbonising oil and clogging oil ways I don't know but apparently from 2014 to 2017, five to seven crankshaft bearing failures had occurred in each month in UK police vehicles.

In about 1969, at 2 a.m. I was driving my 1293 cc Downton Cooper S, near Royal Holloway College on the A30, and obeying the speed limit. I was pulled over by a Police Panda Austin 1300, blue light rotating away on the roof. We were pointing up a fairly steep hill. (This is quite important). As a completely sober 19 year old, I was given full roadside interrogation. Is this your car, have you been drinking, driving licence. Tyre check, the lot. I noticed whilst this prolonged interview was taking place, that the blue light was slowing down and eventually came to a standstill. I was given permission to leave the “scene”, as I did I realised the Panda headlights had gone out. Panda pointing uphill with a completely flat battery.

I think it was Patrick Head who once complimented Adrian Newey as one of the few people who could look at a race car holistically - he just had an innate understanding about a car from the front to rear. Apparently, that's a challenge especially in a understanding aero.

As an Alonso fan, it'll be exciting to see how the rest of the season play's out. I don't realistically think the Aston will be able to get multiple wins this season, but they will be the team to watch over the course of the year. As for Mercedes/Hamilton not being competitive....I hold the view that its almost similar to what was happening in the NBA between 2015-2019 where the Golden State Warriors were almost a write in to win the Championship year in, year out. Mercedes not running away with everything makes the sport a little more interesting and while Red Bull had dominated the championship last year I don't think they will see the same amount of dominance that we saw over the last eight year with Mercedes with the introduction of the cost -cap, Red Bull's cost cap penalties being applied this year and the new technical regulations.
@JamesCairney

A title fight would be nice to see. The problem I see with Red Bull is Adrian Newey. In his spare time he designed a "sucker car" that used very similar style venturi tunnels, and the aston Valhalla and Varkyrie use very similar ground effect venturi tunnels. It looks to me that Red Bull have already done their homework on the new aerodynamics and everyone else will take a while to catch up. I don't think funding caps will stop the Red Bull dominance. Im not a Red Bull fan either, I'd like to see a title fight.
@parthlad

@@JamesCairney Full respect to Adrian and his team, they had the regulations down to pat and the fruits of their labour is really on display so far. Regarding the F1 conversation, Red Bull have the season stitched up (I'd rather they hadn't) Ferrari will struggle for second, Aston Martin seem to have came from nowhere, whether they keep pace all season I don't know but it would be good to see, Mercedes are still slow and Mclaren who? Red Bull will take first and second in the drivers championship. It may be another dull season on the front row. Alonso fighting the Ferraris will be the interesting battle.
