He looks like he can maintain order, a Tang bouncer. Glad you got the lots and provided them with good homes, "Always Looking," one of my Updike books on art.

If I said this before, I'm sorry...I just love how you start these personal videos differently than the Bidamount ones. It speaks to your abilities to keep these separate from the " regular " ones. I hope you keep these as a reoccurring tradition, cuz we all love them.

I was watching this video and thought "why not look up "carved Chinese" on my regular auction site". Found a supremely rare and incorrectly described Singaporean altar cabinet for auction - turned out the auction was live and this was one lot away. Somehow I registered and got it on the opening bid.... CHEAPLY. This, mind you, comes from years of studying the area. But damn, if it wasn't for this video, I wouldn't have looked in time.

Peter, this is just wonderful, and for me, one of the best parts, second only to seeing this fascinating Tang bust, was being able to focus on those rabbits in the background…I just love those two💗😁! Thank you for this extra treat this week!

I thought that you would talk about that statue of the Tang lady. What a great condition! It’s extremely rare to see a statue like that with all the pigments remaining almost completely intact! No museum in the world has an example like that in such an incredible condition! Absolutely Unbelievable! I truly hope that you didn’t sell it

Wang Jian's tomb in Chengdu, Sichuan, late Tang, has half-length busts of "pall bearers" supporting his sarcophagus, sunk into the floor. They're more realistic than this (carved to look central Asian, not Chinese), but similar sort of thing.

Peter, this figure is really unusual. All tomb figures that I have seen have been full length. I suppose that the glaze drip on the front was caused by a highly glazed object where the glaze melted onto the kiln shelf. Could this not be a tomb figure, but an early statue of bodhidharma? Legend has it that this monk's arms and legs fell off due to extreme meditation. Might this explain why the lack of any well formed arms and legs on this piece?

Dear Peter, in my opinion, the Bust may be earlier than Tang Dynasty. According to the style of his cap and clothes, he is wearing a typical clothes of North Wei(386-534 AD) of China.
@giellouws84732 жыл бұрын
It could well be Sui dynasty looking at the style. Not sure it was originaly made as a bust, could well be cut from a broken piece.

Hello Giel, I had thought that was possible until it arrived. There is a small bit of amber glaze near the base that ran under the edge of the bottom, had it been cut the glaze obviously wouldn't be there. The bottom is also slightly irregular from the potting and has no aspects that would indicate it was cut from a larger piece.. Best Peter.

I'd buy a temple guardian, but not a tomb guardian. Call me superstitious.

Why is no one buying Tang or Han anymore? It was all the rage in the 1990s.
