I can attest to them seeding easily. I had planted them in a few planters last year and this year was not sure I'd be able to buy plants for the planters... until I noticed all these new plants coming up. I kept watching them and pretty soon realized they were petunias and I actually had to thin them. But I never just thin-- I always transplant if possible. By the time I was finished one flower box and two planters gave me 3 beds of petunias! Plus, the planters were still full to overflowing. So, yes, they reseed very easily. And I hadn't really stored them over the winter, either. I just removed the old plants, put the planters in a corner of my porch and covered them with a plastic tarp. That was it. In the spring I re-hydrated the planters with plans to buy new planting. But the plants came up before I had a chance to do that. :) By the way, everyone says to put seeds in a paper bag but I put them in envelopes (the smaller, letter envelope), mark it, then put them in the fridge which is a nice cool, dark and dry place. By the end of fall I have a whole shelf of envelopes! I get strange looks from my kids when they visit but it works. LOL!

Thank you for the info. I live in the desert region of W.TX and I have taken great care to cultivate/prep the soil for planting. I planted Petunias I bought at Wal-Mart thinking "if anything they'll be nice for a little while" but to my surprise, they have been blooming almost all year around right along side my dianthus for the past 2yrs. High heat, rain, snow, frost, doesn't seem to phase them so its nice to see there is a way to seed them to other planters I have in the yard.

Thank you for the demonstration. Putting down the Hite paper was a good idea and helped me to see the seeds.

You are right about them growing where they want to. I had one seed travel via the rain or wind down to the dumpster and there it grew in a crack in the pavement! I brought it back to the garden where it belonged.

short and sweet! Thanks! My wife hates that I pay 4 bucks for a packet of 12 seeds at the store. I had no idea so many seeds come from one pod!

Do the seeds need to be put in cold storage. I've collected seeds and planted them and they do not grow. The variety I have has been on my property for about 40 yrs. They reseed prolifically naturally but not with the seeds I collect...?

Hi Jane. Do the seeds produce plants similar to the parent plant? People tell me it won't be the same..smaller, different color, or other variation.

You can plant them outdoors in early spring or you can plant them indoors in late winter for transplanting.

its pretty cool out and still no seeds on teh petunias, the morning glory seeds are still green. if it gets cold adn they go dormant will I lose my seeds or can you take the plant turn it upside down the nursery and wait for them to turn brown? it's warmer in there?

I plant petunias in the same big pot every year and I never got them to come back I didn't even know they could came back, I'm so happy to know I can reseed them. Do you know why they never come back in the really large pot? Thank you Marlyne.

You just have to put them were you want to grow, eithier in pots or the ground and sprinkle them. Wet them a bit and you are good to go.

Probably, but there are hundreds of seeds in one pod.

It may be that your petunias are sterile. I use the "Wave" petunia. It produces more flowers and costs more than other petunias.
