I’ve taken a year long break and it was probably one of the best financial decisions I’ve made while collecting. I’ll start buying physical media again, but I don’t need everything. All I want is to curate a collection that means something to me and one day be done. I no longer care about the shiny limited edition box sets for films I’ll probably not even like.

With me, I’ll never be fully “done” because there’s new movies coming out every year that I wanna own. But as far as back catalogue stuff, I pretty much own everything I feel like I need.

I've been collecting for over 30 years, and I'm still loving it. I only buy things that I can afford. And I don't give into FOMO. If I buy a Blu-Ray and then they drop a cool 4K Steelbook, I think "dang it" and move on. And I actually watch the movies I buy. I'm not collecting just to collect. I'm collecting because I love watching movies.

I feel like you should only own what you want to own and what you’ll watch multiple times, you don’t need every new release and if anything you could get many other films you love for the same cost as a new 4K or cheaper. Only invest in what you have and what’s comfortable for you.

I have been collecting for a while. One of my "core" philosophy which worked for me so far is - Do not buy the same movie twice. Here is how i do it - (1) When I buy a movie, I try to buy the best format available for example buy the 4KUHD-Blu Ray combo if available vs. just the Blu Ray or just 4KUHD. Collector set/box set over individual release. (2) Maintain a catalog (i have a Letterboxd list) so I don't buy the same movie again, by mistake. (3) Even if I miss out a release with a slip case and the same movie is later available with an updated slip case or packaging element, I won't touch it.

As somebody that’s been collecting movies since DVDs first came out, I think the best thing to do is to not upgrade especially if you have the Blu-ray just buy new releases. I own roughly 1000 movies 40% of them are DVD another 40% is Blu-ray and 20% 4K Blu-ray. Going forward everything I buy is 4K Blu-ray but in reality I only purchased about 10 movies this year.

@@Talesfromtheshelf yeah, I bought Unforgiven on 4k although owning it on bluray and kinda regretted it afterwards, despite the new release having a nice crisper pic. Also I think the whole collecting aspect is wrong in a sense, in my opinion. When I bought my first dvd back in 2000, I did so, because I wanted to see that particular movie. 24 years forwards it's become: I need this, I need that, fill my shelves.. without even always feeling that "I would like to see this movie."

The best thing I can recommend is to get a good 4K Bluray Player like one of the recent Panasonic players or the Sony UB-X800 Mk2. You'll be absolutely blown away by the picture quality these players squeeze out of DVD's and regular Blurays. And you won't feel any need to "upgrade" your collection to 4k. DVD's and Blurays are dirt cheap when buying second hand right now.

Nor am I interested in rebuying everything I've bought before. I'm not a slip cover fetishist, so I also got left behind when so much more emphasis stated being placed on presentation and packaging. When I first started buying movies, they were on VHS. When DVD came along, I recognized that the upgrade in picture quality and the inclusion of special features was a massive upgrade. (Having never really known anything about LaserDisc, the directors' commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, etc really blew me away.) When Blu-Ray came along, again, I recognized that it was a big upgrade over DVD. Not only was the picture quality clearly better but the Blu-Ray often had additional content that the DVD didn't. When 4K came along, I jumped aboard. I have a 4K player and about 20 4K discs. But it's the first format where I'm not really sure that the improvements are worth it. Many times I find the 4K picture quality to be nearly indistinguishable from Blu-Ray. Honestly, I think we could just stick with 1080p from here on out and I would be content.

Physical media is fun to collect and display, but extra features can only get you so far. It's almost more important to buy physical media of older movies in their original state rather than upgraded quality versions with "extra features." Imagine my surprise when I first saw the Blu-ray version!

Collecting Physical is still fun. It's still enjoyable to get your favourite films or blind buy a movie in a genre you like but perhaps haven't seen that particular title. (Ie; what i do with Giallo films). The only thing I'd say isn't the "fun" part is not having the money to keep up with all these new box sets. Ie; Shaw Brothers boxes, Giallo boxes, TV Series Box sets etc etc. FOMO of the special editions getting sold out before you have the money, and being left with getting the basic edition or having to get scalped by eBay assh*les.

You hit the nail on the head about upgrades. I am 37 years old and I got into collecting standard DVDs in college around 2005 into 2006. Almost immediately, by the end of 2006 and on, I got hit with 2 disc and/or remastered DVD reissues of most of the movies I had owned and I upgraded them like a madman and was often spending tons of my money double dipping these movies. For example, Anchor Bay did this a lot around 2007-2008 when they'd change a release's artwork and add one new special feature. Then, when Blu-ray began taking off, most of the same movies got yet another reissue on that format and I made a decision to stick with the standard DVDs and I still stick with them to this day. Luckily for me, they still release new movies on standard DVD. I initially did this because DVD players were much more plentiful in the late 2000s. They were also in video game systems and computers. You could always find a place to play your DVDs. I also figured that there were always going to be new formats until the end of time and it would be insane to try to keep up with this for the rest of my life. As I get older, I feel like it's best for one's sanity to just find the format you like and stick with it. It saves a lot of money and headaches.

This is the same shit that got me out of physical media in 2010 or so. I had a massive DVD collection I'd been curating for about a decade, and blu ray was starting to pop off, and I was very daunted by the idea of double-dipping on dozens of films. Around that time streaming was becoming a thing, so I was subscribed to Netflix disc service and got streaming, Redbox was a thing, and I stopped buying in favor of renting discs and streaming. I went most of the 2010s not buying very much, just the occasional release of a film I REALLY loved. Got sucked back in the past few years for 4k, but I still have many of my old DVDs from back in the day, and I'm only upgrading them from time to time when I find a good deal. Plus the move from DVD to 4k is a lot more apparent than blu ray to 4k

I have to agree with you on many points because collecting physical media these days no longer has the same effect as it did in the 80s, 90s and 2000s and I have been collecting myself for over 30 years, so I can easily assess how the hobby has developed over time the decades changed. The 4K format doesn't have much appeal for me personally and as you said, 90% of the films released have been available on Bluray for years and are significantly cheaper. In addition, I'm a retro film fan and don't need to see everything ultra sharp because a lot of it loses its charm, which of course is just my opinion. I also realize that nowadays this hobby is purely a collector's market, which is basically only interesting for hardcore collectors who can't pre-order the stuff fast enough because of the "FOMO" effect. Personally, I was always only interested in the film when I bought it physically, but somehow I get the feeling that the film itself is no longer the focus for many collectors like it used to be. Instead, they moan when the standard 4K Blu-ray comes without a slipcover, which I cannot understand, and in the end you are ruining your own hobby if you are only interested in steelbooks, large boxes, and slipcovers 🤦‍♂️ This isn't meant to be hateful, it's just a personal recognition of mine. I still watch films on DVD today because for me it's not necessarily about the best quality, it's the content and what you associate with it that's important. Godspeed 🤘

I am older guy and honestly I agree the prices are getting ridiculous. I love marvel but have not bought most of the last phase releases because the movies aren’t very good and the price is too high for a poor movie. I don’t hate DVDS and actually like some of the old menu interactions and features. What I have started doing to have fun again is hitting second hand stores and picking up older movies I don’t have for a buck or 2 a piece. I actually prefer buying an older movie that way because the older cases are very sturdy and I feel the discs were actually made better. If I order the same thing new off Amazon the case is so flimsy it’s not really protecting the movie. Sometimes the newer releases also have a different soundtrack because of expired rights and such. Going and buying everything in the box store is boring but stoping at a second hand store with no idea what you may stumble across is exciting!

Thank you, Mark for this, honest thoughts, no sugarcoating! I've been collecting movies since my first job after high school. Started with DVDs, progressed to blu-rays and now adding 4Ks. But my collection over several years was very small but it had the movies that mattered to me, ones that I would watch multiple times. Every since I started collecting 4Ks in 2021, it spiraled out of control and now I am in the process of curating and downsizing, which is fun but totally unnecessary if I stuck to collecting my favourites from the beginning. My biggest advice is to collect what matters to you. And do not let FOMO get you. There are several KZbin channels that thrive on purchasing and showing off their physical media courtesy of their subscribers and watch time, they get kickbacks from your purchases, studios send them review copies etc. This does not apply to the common folk. Assess your situation, reflect on the movie and then make the call.

I enjoy the videos like this one where you encourage discussions about movies , or videos like the 'horror movies don't care about Oscars' or the ' watching in the Letterboxd era ' . The idea that a movie I considered bad might be better on a second watch in 4K never made sense to me but I do watch remakes of bad movies hoping they will be better 😄

I'm kind of with you man. I want to make my channel a place to celebrate movies. With very little focus on physical media unless I'm just gushing over the poster artwork. This is what frustrates me with screen factory, not only are they only releasing upgrades but there's no reversal artwork. And maybe one new commentary. I've only upgraded a few movies from scream fracturing and I've ended up keeping the Blu-Ray so I could use the alternate artwork. Now I have upgraded some movies to 4K like Scarface because I had a better transfer. But especially recently I do get tired of everything being a re-release.

@@ronthorn3 ya a couple things I've already decided I'm doing starting now. One is I will no longer be buying the Second Sight collector editions even if it's movies I absolutely love, instead I'm gonna buy the standard 4ks. Reason is I realized how stupid it is to buy the bigger box taking up space that had art cards I never look at, and books I never read, so it makes absolutely 0 sense to keep buying these. I honestly have thought about reselling all my Second Sight CE's and rebuying the standards just to get the extra space back. The 2nd thing is not feeling the want to upgrade all my blurays when a 4k is announced. A good case in point is the recent 4k upgrade of Fright from Kino. I was gonna jump on it but when I read that it doesn't even have HDR added, and it's a movie that I just kinda like OK, it makes no sense to spend money to upgrade it. I will not be buying any non-studio releases on release as those always get cheaper with time too.

Now I really agree with you, it is become a competition to see who has the newest greatest thing. Now that definitely takes the fun out of it. Collecting is not about doing better than our neighbor or having it bigger stack. It’s about enjoying the collection for ourselves and sharing it with our friends and close family. That is become an issue that I definitely agree with a lot of these large KZbin channels make it out to be like a symbol if you will boast about how big their collection is even though they try to act as if they’re not. You know as well as I do some of these big KZbinr, these titles given to them for free to basically advertise for the studio. That isn’t so much fun. I enjoy spending my time on channels that go out and about to thrift stores and garage sales and flea markets and people that just sit in their Mandan like you and just discuss what is really important about our community and what it is that we really enjoy and our passion for collecting.that is why I have subscribed to your channel quite some time ago. But this whole 4k thing / obsession is ridiculous. The fact that you have to buy a whole new 4k disc player in order to even view the film isn't worth it. Stick with your Blu-Ray players or Xboxs / Playstations. That's all you really need IMO. I'm NEVER buying 4k's or a 4k player. Not falling into that scam. Did you not yet have a 4k TV in 2018 when you chose to buy blu only? I've purchased 2 large and expensive 4k TVs so part of my buying is that I have to justify investing in those by building up my 4k library and I do want many titles in the best quality, particularly if I don't own the film on blu at all. As 4k has become more prevalent there are a lot of titles being released I already have blus of that I don't need to upgrade for. But certain ones I do. I probably do own the majority of say, my top 200 films but my collection is much larger than that and I'd like to keep growing it, not infinitely but I want it bigger than it is now. How many titles do you own? I have upgraded a lot of blu to 4k but I don't feel inclined to upgrade every time, it depends on the film, but it's still definitely fun to me. I'm a huge horror/scifi collector and every year we are still getting new to blu or never on disc releases, things I've never owned in good quality, and those are great to see. I dont obsess over having the limited edition versions of everything, most Arrow and Second Sight I'm fine with a cheaper standard but with companies like Vinegar Syndrome who have such nice slips I like to get the full package when possible and I usually wait for their sales to pick those up. Your point about watching a new release once then shelving it for years...I think that's just the reality of collecting for most collectors, I'd say for most titles aren't watched yearly, especially the bigger the collection the less frequently titles are rewatched. I curate a lot and it may take me awhile to revisit certain titles but I like having them on hand when I do want to watch them.

Thanks for another great video. I fully agree that this hobby can sometimes become extremely irritating. Sadly, I started collecting DVDs back in the late 90's. So my DVD library was pretty substantial before I made the leap over to Blu-ray. Around 1000 DVDs in total at the time. So the upgrade was gradual & expensive. Then we get 4k, with this special edition, then that ultimate edition, then the super mega ultra edition. So yeah, only someone who was super looney toonie or is a sadist would continue to play such games IMO. Also, I feel compelled to add. How very irritating I find yt creators who honestly buy every single new release that comes out. Only for show & never to actually watch. It just really bugs me to my core for some reason. I get it, each to their own. But that seems like more of a mental health issue, than an honest collector IMO🤪!!! Thanks again for the awesome video!

After collecting this stuff for a while you get a little tired. I love movies but it's no longer about that. These companies feel the need to load up unnecessary packaging, posters and pieces of cardboard. I just want to own the movies, so I've begun to thrift for DVDs of movies I don't own or buy them used online for cheap. I agree that spending 40-50$ on one release just doesn't make sense anymore, and this is especially true if you already own it on DVD or Blu-Ray. Dead Silence would be a good used DVD purchase. I have moved into more of the boutique market for upgrades because there’s a lot of older stuff being upgraded in the boutique sector. Yes, they’re going to do terminator to 300,000 times and 300,000 different ways and same with the Ghostbusters and all of the big box office stuff they think they’re gonna make money on. But that’s where we get to vote with our already why do we need some sort of big box exclusive if the quality we have we’re satisfied with for instance this new never-ending story yes it came out on 4K but no, I’m not spending $200 for this ridiculous oversized box. I will wait until the price drop like $25-$30 and I’ll upgrade my VHS tape at that point. I’m in no hurry. I’ve had a VHS copy of the never-ending story for at least 25 years. 6:38

I never got into the 4K format, I get blue rays and the DVD if I can't get it on Blue Ray or if it isn't offered any other way, but 4K actually makes me dizzy watching it, so I'm all good with that. I only bought a 4K because I couldn't find the movie I like on Blue Ray and it came with that, I don't even own a 4K player.

Have been buying since VHS but this collector's conundrum has definitely gotten worse, especially with the limited editions. They know there's a subset of the population that will absolutely buy every limited item made. I haven't jumped all the way into 4k yet. I'm actually still replacing all my old DVDs with Blu-ray discs 😂😂

To be honest, blu ray is more than adequate for a large portion of films. 4k discs are not all created equal.

I don't need 4K. Bluray is good enough and the price is right. TBF DVD is good enough if there's no Bluray option.

I pretty much agree with you. You really need to scrutinize the quality of every release because between the studios and the boutique labels, you just dont know what your getting. And its not like these releases are getting any cheaper. Zodiac was disappointing and im thinking of sending the 4k back to Amazon. Its just not worth it. Every movie is different and its worth needs to be judged. But then you have a certain physical media channel telling me that "we are taking it too seriously and we should be happy with what we get."

At the end of the day it’s on us as individuals. We’re all responsible for ourselves and shouldn’t look to others to inform our decisions. We can take advice and from others but ultimately we have to do what’s best for ourselves. If you can collect within your means and still buy everything you feel like you need, then more power to ya. Thank you for watching my video

The age of movie is my main factor when looking at newer formats, what can they do to this 90s movie in 4k that was already done in Blu-ray. The only upgrades I have ever done has been The Lord of the Rings extended because Peter Jackson himself put the effort in to improve, even then I got 4k cheap.

I just upgraded my dvd of Gene Wilder Willy Wonka to a standard blu ray, and I was very underwhelmed and disappointed. Is the 4k worth getting?

No need to upgrade everything, it's just throwing money at stuff because it's new but that doesn't necessarily equal better. I have most movies I want, it's about the movie itself not the format so I'm not letting any new industry fads take over my collection. I have what I have and it's a lot already of endless rows of shelves, the format is almost secondary to me in that regard. Basically, DVD is still fine and Blu-ray's fine, the experience and enjoyment of a favorite movie has to be the essential thing still.

The only reason to buy 4k over streaming is sound. If you own a very good surround system the difference in sound over what you get with streaming is miles apart.

Very sage advice. This is a great video. New sub - I look forward to watching your other content. I actually don’t buy many movies but when I do it’s for odd reasons. I will actually buy a cheap DVD because it’s cheaper, I’m only gonna watch it a few times if that, and the cover art is better in that there’s more of it and it looks cooler. I actually don’t own many 4k movies but I look forward to buying them used. I will buy groups of movies when there are sales. For instance, about a year ago I bought 30 or so Indicator Films on Blu-ray because they were so cheap and they are packed with special features, making it worth the money for me.

480p still can look pretty good, unless you need to show off your TV. Upgrade to 1080p bluray if its a $3 for favorites at a thrift store. 4K for those special ones. Dolby Digital 5.1 and video is still magical on lower DVD specs. Even 6.1 on DTS
