I tell people that watch enthusiasts are basically like a cross between car collectors and art enthusiasts. We're nuts, we know we're nuts, we don't need you to explain why we're nuts.

I've been there and car and art collecting are far nutsier. There's a certain pathetic moderate quaintness to us watchies compared to many alternatives.

You are buying a watch cause you like it. It reflects your personality and style; you love how it catches the light. You do not care about the resale value. You are keeping it for life. You will pass on to your children. Suddenly, since you bought it, you notice more people's wrists. On the last health check, you were okay, with no mental problems. You do not care about resale value. In a month, you start hearing voices in your head whispering... Open Chrono 24. No, you are not mad. You have just successfully been initiated into the watch world.

I have the money, and desperately tried to convince myself to buy a Daytona because that’s what many people told me to buy, but no, I just couldn’t like that watch. I ended up buying a Moser Endeavour and a VC 1921 because that’s what I truly love.

Well met name sake. Why I would refuse to buy a Rolex is not for the cash value. Rather my values. Rolex used to be an aspirational watch for the blue collar man, symbol of hard work and achievement. Now it is a icon of elitist Peacocks. Feel free to enjoy any watch you want. Keep your Daytona but I'll be wearing a watch with more meaning than the Nike swoosh.

A couple of years ago I spent a massive $400 on a Casio Oceanus that's been accurate to the second ever since. Should have stopped then. More recently I bought a Longines Chronograph that runs very accurately for a mechanical movement. Should have stopped then. You know where this is going...

Get a Casio F-91W and be done with it..... maybe add an A168 for those other occasions..... possibly a G-Shock for when the going gets rough..... maybe a mechanical watch as it doesn't need a battery and perish the thought maybe won't get fried by an EMP from doctor evil. Oh dear... I just read my comment... that explains why watch collections grow, we find reasons from out of thin air to get another watch. Now where did I put my F-91W... oh it's sitting right next to my backup F-91W. I'll get my coat.

I have 14 watches and the itch returned! I didn't want to spend thousands to scratch it so I bought a couple of antique pocket watches. Both are over a hundred years old and cost a hell of a lot less than my cheapest luxury watch . I don't feel the itch so I think I have a temporary fix. (I often wear 3 piece suits so I can actually use them.)

agreed haha. plus if I need to time something, I would rather just use my phone's stop watch. I don't think a majority of Daytona owners even use their chronographs, since you would have to unscrew them first before using it. By then most of what they time might already have passed by then.

Every watch addict should watch this video. Because it is a kind of addiction. I just bought two watches in the last two weeks. They’re really affordable Orients because my rationalisation was ditch the small expensive collection for more watches I just like. But I don’t need 6 chronos, 3 divers, and 2 dress watches. Plus my casios.

I have a couple friends who like watches and we discuss our watches when we get together. Apart from that not a single person has ever commented on what I have on my wrist. I buy watches for my own enjoyment, it is purely personal. I rotate wearing them every few weeks and it is like falling in love again. I can sit and stare at my watch for minutes on end, lost in thought, admiring the beauty and appreciating the amazing commitment to mechanical perfection that went into its construction. Same thing when driving my cars (yes, I have a collection of those too), I appreciate their physical beauty and the amazing engineering to generate that performance from igniting an explosive chemical.

I had 16 Watches mostly Swiss, one German and all big Brands from Japan. I mainly gave them away because if you did not use them, they broke over time. Now I'm close to 75 years old and have only 4 watches left. However, the Watch I use the most is a simple Fossil Pathfinder (SOLAR similar to ECO DRIVE) It is convenient no need to shake a Watch or Watch winding.

😅 this is all soo true- I would argue that buying a homage perhaps is a great way to scratch the itch should you chose to go for the real deal. I bought a Moonwatch for this very reason and now own a lovely second hand speedy caliber 1861. Banged it on a Bond nato and I’m as happy as a pig in mud. I think the watch obsession is very different for everyone. I look at the Daytona and just go meh…… I appreciate it. I appreciate lots about big but I’ve never warmed to it at all. All I know is, my wife and friends think I’m odd for my “ enthusiasm “ towards watches. I love it and it makes me happy. Some collect stamps, coins…. Fridge magnets! Buying a watch is not a logical or practical decision, as much as I try to make it to be. It’s largely an emotional decision. I don’t want to pull the trigger unless I’ve fallen in love with a watch. If you're on the fence with a purchase, blue ball yourself - you can always buy more watches or window shop for that last watch box slot, but can't always return them. Yes you could sell your watch, (likely at a loss) but I think to most of us it's too much of an inconvenience than if you waited to truly decide if you want to buy - plus if you can wait long enough for a sale then it's a bonus and if it becomes unavailable then it wasn't meant to be.

As someone who's owned one, the Daytona is a curious proposition. It looks and feels gorgeous on the wrist; I'm not sure I've ever worn a watch that looked and felt better or more solid (and I've worn some very high-end pieces). But it's practically unusable as a watch. It's extremely hard to read - especially if you have old eyes - and damned near impossible to use in bright sunlight. It's more jewelry than watch.
What You NEED To Know BEFORE Buying These Hot Watches!
