The loan u get against the asset “value” is lower % than investing in avg return of the market, it’s like a guaranteed profit. Can also be handed down after death to family. It’s basically a never ending perpetual interest payment u receive ur whole life. It’s like a money printing machine. This is why people pay crazy $ for art also and many other things. Asking for a card from 2002 that had a print run of only -/50 is going to be a very difficult thing to find. I’d bet at least half are in collections that may never see the light of day. Hell, I have a 2001 or 2002 Ichiro fleet card numbered out of 100 sitting in my collection. If the only way to obtain these hard to find cards is through a bounty, what’s wrong with that? PSA continues to surprise me with their #1 position. In my opinion they are not the best grader, the best authenticator, the best at customer service…it has to be the registry and their guarantees. For autograph authentication I’ve been using JSA more as I’m tired of PSA charging me and returning autographs as questionable. I have a lot of autographs I collected in the 60’s and 70’s that I want authenticated and slabbed. I had 2 Pete Maravich autographs from 1973 returned by PSA as questionable. Just received them back today from JSA, authenticated and graded. With their JSA partnership I plan to start using CGC for slabbing my old autographs.

There are still some reasons to send to Beckett. If you think PSA pop controls which they do, then can send to Beckett and hope to get the 9.5. For example i have a Rickey Henderson RC Psa 9 and a Jordan sticker RC PSA 9. Both went through the pwcc vault and got their top 5% rating. So its worth a try crossing to a Beckett 9.5. If it doesnt, then can send to SGC for either a 9.5 or 10. Either would bring much higher values than a psa 9. On a side note, a Beckett 10 sells for more than a PSA 10 but why doesnt an SGC 10 sell for more than a PSA 10? Since SGC can either grade a card Mint + 9.5 or Gem MT 10, you would think they have another layer to filter the gem mint cards. Some psa 10s are only Mint +...anyway may be a good topic for your channel when grading standards are discussed.

@kingsfan_Tim26 күн бұрын
@JunkWaxHero i was comparing SGC 10 and PSA 10. BGS 10 is pristine so harder to get and should sell more than SGC and PSA 10 which are gem mints. My question was between SGC 10 and PSA 10...It should be harder to get a SGC 10 than a PSA 10 in theory because some Mint + cards are being graded SGC 9.5 already so to get a SGC 10 should be tougher...but I guess people just prefer psa 10s as they feel that is the highest psa can give. I do wonder if i can cross some sgc 10s to psa 10s.
@JunkWaxHero26 күн бұрын
@@kingsfan_Tim SGC has two 10s. The standard one is gem mint like PSA’s. Then they have the “gold” pristine 10, which is way rarer.

@@JunkWaxHeroyes familiar with the gold sgc for pristine but just comparing the sgc gem mint 10 and the psa 10. Anyway its fun discussing the grading scale as the same card can be graded a psa 9 or sgc 9.5 or bgs 9.5 and it has huge impact in prices.

To be pedantic. Bounty is a weird/incorrect term for how people seem to use it in the Hobby in the first place IMO. A "Bounty" when looking for a Criminal is paid for information leading to the arrest/conviction of a person. A "Bounty" in sports cards seems to be just an Open Offer for purchasing the card. A real bounty would be a finders fee for locating the card, maybe conditional based of the card being purchased. Is he willing to pay $400 to locate this card? The value of Beckett is not the number of cards they grade monthly. The value is how many potential cards they could grade monthly plus the value of their subscription lists, loyal customers, trade name and potentially any trade secrets Beckett has that the industry is not privy to plus those million slabs per month is nothing to sneeze at. The amount overall has a lot of gray area and questions and unknowns. But that gives Beckett more leverage than any other method. Topps is horrible. Absolutely horrible. It is not pure coincidence that damaged cards end up in packs. It is not pure coincidence that "hits" in retail are 50% chance of being pulled as damaged. It's higher than 50/50 actually. It has to be. This reminds me of law school and reading about what took down the cigarette industry. The cigarette industry was essentially immune from lawsuits for decades because they did not have to list their ingredients. That's because cigarettes were sold as 'premium' cigarettes. And just like premium whiskey or premium cigars, cigarettes sold as premium did not have to list their ingredients. But because the cigarettes were sold as 'premium' they had to be manufactured as premium. They had to use only the best ingredients and assembly techniques to ensure the cigarettes were manufactured as premium (as compared to lesser quality cigarettes, which of course, there were none). But that all changed one day. Tobacco roles down the assembly line and is assembled with the paper and packaged for sale. But it was discovered that during assembly, some tobacco usually falls off the assembly line and lands in the floor. Also it was discovered that this tobacco on the floor is swept up and put back on the assembly line. I think they called it reconstituted tobacco. Great for not wasting product. But by putting reconstituted tobacco back onto the assembly line, the 'Premium' designation was lost. You don't put tobacco off the floor into premium cigarettes. When you do, you no longer have a premium product and must list your ingredients. That is what essentially opened a whole new avenue to sue cigarette companies and the rest is history. Let's look at the card industry. There were similar issues as the cigarette industry had years ago. The card industry used to sell premium cards back in the mid 1990's. That's how Stadium Club and SP, etc were all advertised. And the quality and quality control was much higher. It had to be or the FTC would get involved. But card companies figured out that they could remove the 'premium' label and not be restricted in what they put in boxes and packs. Suddenly, those dinged cards were able to be in the packs with the others. And even more amazingly, the market didn't change. There was still the demand which was increasing and people didn't seem to notice the premium language removed from the packs and boxes. The price could still be $500 per box or even $2k per box. They still sold. I think someone would probably suggest that the addicted percentage of the market is responsible for some market anomalies. So that kind of takes us to today's market IMO. You see some card companies use the premium language in their product descriptions but they use language very carefully. Otherwise, those $2k boxes of cards are simply standard issue cards with standard issue guarantees and obligations (essentially no guarantees), but a premium issue price which people don't seem to mind. /rant at Topps for today.

I didn’t expect to see the card industry compared to the cigarette industry, but this was a great comment!

@@JunkWaxHero this is how they keep putting damaged cards into packs and getting away with it. It is not pure coincidence that the best card pulled out of a retail blaster or hanger is often damaged. That is the norm, not the exception - like 20 boxes in a row and every single box the best card is damaged. 20 random purchases in a row and the best card in every single box is the only damaged card. Let me put that out one more time - 20 random 2024 Topps retail boxes in a row and the best card is damaged in every single box. Not half the time but every single time. This is the news about the hobby that needs to be told about. It is amazing how card companies can get away with this year after year. This happens in this particular type of market. It is very, very (make that extremely) easy to pull the wool over the eyes of this market. That is why the card market is so hot. Not because of the product. But because of the cluelessness of so many that purchase new cards. That is where the upside is.

Where I do think you are wrong about something was your statement that Topps can't keep adding parallels. They can. Because these card cucks have shown that no matter what bullshit the card companies put out, no matter how many times they screw over collectors...they won't put their money where their mouth is and stop buying. At a second level, even IF they did...breakers still bust so much of the product that the collectors stepping back, while it would be a hit, wouldn't break them at all.
