And while on the topic, the comment "she’s a freaking boss for giving birth to a human!" is still problematic. That’s the kind of implicit statement which makes women who can’t give birth or choose not to, and moms who use a gestational carrier or adopt feel less-than. We need to be inclusive of *all* women when speaking about women and not swing the pendulum to the other side.

The whole “SnapBack” culture does my head in. I was one of the ones that did “snapback” I walked out of the hospital at my old weight because I didn’t gain that much during pregnancy. However, after 7 months of breastfeeding, I gained about 36lb and you get that label of having “let yourself go”.... when behind closed doors I’m a single parent that had to eat to stay awake with clusterfeed etc. It pathetic that our society puts so much pressure on those that are literally producing our future
@jamiebarrientos99694 жыл бұрын
Breastfeeding actually slows down our metabolism because the hormones dont produce due to other hormones. Also the same reason cycles can stop while breastfeeding. But nobody tells us about it and just assume as you said, that we let ourselves go

Thank you for brining up the fact that everyone comments on “snapping back” after birth. I’ve worked out extremely hard postpartum and lost my pregnancy weight, but everyone has had the need to comment on “how good my stomach looks for just having a baby.” I really get the compliment, but don’t appreciate it. I am working out harder than ever because I almost died from eclampsia and HELLP syndrome, and want to feel healthy after that... not because I want to look “cute.”

Medicine and Mascara yes girl! The last time I lost a significant amount of weight was because I was dealing with depression and literally felt too overwhelmed to figure out what to eat. The amount of people that told me how great I looked made me feel so horrible. I was scream crying in the deepest parts of my soul and all people could see was that I was thin, which to them meant I was doing great. I’m now exercising to keep my mental health in order and have started getting some similar comments of how great I’m looking. It completely misses the point. The reasons to exercise are varied and numerous. Thanks for sharing, I relate 💜

Having an emergency c-section was so traumatizing for me, and the first couple weeks after having my baby girl were the hardest for me. I wasn't able to hold her so I couldn't breast feed properly, then on top of that she was underweight so I was told that I have to give her formula, AND because she took a bottle the first couple of days, she wouldn't latch onto my nipple. So now I am not able to breast feed, I occasionally pump. so grateful for my baby, but I think people fail to realize how intense it is to grow a baby, then give birth or have surgery, then recover, deal with depression or anxiety, no sleep ... and on top of all of that, also taking care of a small person. Thank you for this video, I needed this Baby girl is now almost 2 months
@jade73814 жыл бұрын
You are STRONG! Never forget that, becoming a mother is intense and they don't teach you how to do anything...but it gets easier. I had almost the same experience as you, the anxiety also made bonding pretty difficult which was hard. We are now 1 year 10 months in and it is much much easier. Trust yourself - is the only advice i can give...the babycentre app is also a nice place to go to. 😁
@zaydenelliot93394 жыл бұрын
If I may I'd like to share my breastfeeding story with you. I was a young mom and I didn't want to BF my first daughter, but i REALLY wanted to with my second. With having a toddler and a newborn and being so young I just really wanted those special quiet moments that only her and I could share, but I knew almost from day 1 that something was wrong. She never ever seemed satisfied if she even latched at all and nurses were dismissive and said to give it time. We went home and I tried for a full month but she was crying ALL the time, she wasn't sleeping at ALL and she was ALWAYS giving hunger cues. One day for the first time since becoming a mom the first time I had to put her in the crib and walk away for a few moments and I decided that day to give her a bottle of formula and to my amazement she sucked that thing down so fast and she slept for THREE HOURS. I felt so guilty and ashamed that I wasn't able to share that experience with her for a while but I realized eventually that she was happier and I was happier and our bottle feeding time was more special than any moment we shared breastfeeding. It turned out that she had a mild case of a condition that made it hard for her to breathe while using the amount of "sucking force" (i'm sorry i dont know how else to explain that) needed to BF as opposed to sucking from a bottle, which we didn't learn until months later. In the end we were both SO much happier and healthier bottle feeding and that was the most important thing. That little baby girl is an amazing 11 year old now and she is absolute joy and our bond absolutely did not suffer because we didn't share a beautiful experience with breastfeeding. What I'm trying to say is that no matter what you and your babies health and happiness is the most important thing and in the end you're going to get exactly where you need to be as a mother daughter power duo no matter what that journey looks like. Stay strong and enjoy every single moment because when they say that time flies it's a massive understatement. You're rocking it mama!

The part where Colleen talks about being grateful for one thing and still expressing dificulties about said thing made me realize how people are very quick to judge if you 'complain' or 'express dificulties' with certain things, they stamp you as ungrateful and/or ignorant, not just having a baby, if you complain about the dificulties you face in school, a lot of people will be like 'you should be grateful you're in school' or 'many others wants to be in your spot you know' and they don't actually listen to why you're facing dificulties in the first place, which is really sad

about “snapping back”... one scientific fact is that human females typically require a 125 calorie surplus while pregnant (2125 or around there), but DOUBLE the amount when lactating/breastfeeding. legitimately 4000 calories. the extra weight is there for a reason!
@alyssaisawkward68384 жыл бұрын
alot of pregnant women eat double but gotta remember, one of the people is the size of a baby lol. Eating for 2 adults is just an easy way to gain a lot of unnecessary weight

As the nurse and nutritionist I can assure you that it is unnecessary to eat 4000 calories a day while breastfeeding unless you would like to gain a lot of weight. A woman should eat between 1800 and 2200 calories per day while breastfeeding.

Me too... I ended up having hernia surgery when my youngest child was 14 yrs. old. I had what my OB told me was a pregnancy hernia. When I had to have a hysterectomy my GYN informed me that I had a hernia in my stomach. It didnt bother me til 4 years later. My general surgeon told me I had at least 1 hernia and a possible 2nd one, but he wouldn't know until he did the surgery. On surgery day he actually found 3 hernias. Not sure if that's because I had 3 children or not. I warn any woman who has a hernia during pregnancy to keep an eye on it.

The dark line is called “Linea nigra” and it has nothing to do with the separation of the abdominal muscles which is “Diastasis recti”. Everyone has a line that goes down the middle of their stomachs but it is usually invisible. The line appears often on pregnant women because the hormonal shift can cause hyperpigmentation which causes that existing line to darken as well as other areas of the body, like the nipples.

Emma :P Everyone has the line. It is invisible for most people. Some people with darker tones or hyperpigmentation of the skin have visible lines. It’s not a medical condition.
@flurries-lilac4 жыл бұрын
R Strickland not a medical condition if it’s been there your whole life? If you say it’s caused by a hormone shift in pregnant women could it be caused by a hormone imbalance in women who are not pregnant too?
@RS-cn6px4 жыл бұрын
Emma :P The shift in hormones is what causes it for pregnant women. For other people it could just be how their skin pigmentation is. But normal hormonal changes, like puberty, can cause it to darken I’m not only females, but males too. I wouldn’t be concerned by only the appearance on linea nigra. There would be other signs if it were caused by a problematic hormonal imbalance.

It is so gross how society focuses on women’s bodies and achieving perfection in that sense. Men can say that their bodies are looked at too, and sure they are, but it will never ever be on the level that women are forced to deal with. Girls are raised around “the ideal female figure” and it’s so sad. I’ve never met another woman who was completely confident in her body and never experienced body image issues. And then you think of pregnancy and women dealing with all that comes with that along with body image issues? Ugh it just makes me so sad. All women are beautiful, all people are beautiful.

To all future mother's, young and old mother's, I'm a man and I'll never get to know how all of this feels, which emotions are coming up and how the body changes. But I have to tell you, that every single one of you should be so proud of yourself. All of you deserve so much respect for everything, you're going and went through while you're pregnant and afterwards. I want you to know, that no one of you should be ashamed of how your body is changing and that your body is not "perfect" after you've created and gave birth to a little human being. You're beautiful. You're perfect. I really don't want women to feel all this pressure from society. I want women to be proud of themselves, no matter how they're looking after giving birth. Sometimes, our society really sucks.

I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and I’m so so so happy I’m pregnant again but it feels like no one else sees it as a blessing like i do. I know how you feel. I'm 32 weeks, and when I tell people, I just get told I'm so tiny and barely look pregnant. Up until about 28 weeks, I was told I didn't look pregnant at all. It hurts, especially after a miscarriage. And people don't think their comments are harmful, but they really make you feel like you're doing something wrong, or your body isn't doing the whole 'pregnancy thing' correctly. It's horrible and alienating and I wish people would just stop commenting on women's bodies...whether it's their pregnant body or post-partum body. Everyone is different, and every body will present things differently. Hopefully one day society won't be so insensitive. :(

pretending that everything is magical and beautiful is not going to help anyone either though. That just enforces the problem and spreading misinformation, because then you have a bunch of girls growing up thinking that childbirth is just this magical beautiful process glossing over all the real parts and they come out of it like "Why did no one tell me this would hurt like hell and that it would be so messy?!". I believe the idea that Colleen in trying to get across is that we need to NORMALIZE this information, birth is a natural process, periods are natural, breastfeeding is natural....but you are allowed to feel like any/all those things are a bit "gross" or weird too. Like I don't find my period beautiful, I think it can be gross, and that's OK. The idea is that we should make talking about these things normal and not like it is something shameful we should shy away from and never talk about. Birth is amazing and beautiful....its also a bit "gross" (you are not exactly shooting out confetti down there), and that's OK, and you are allowed to feel that way, and we should EMBRACE all the beauty and grossness of life and make it more ok and normal to talk about.

I’m almost 5 mos PP and it’s so hard mentally and physically to feel like yourself again. I had really bad baby blues and put a ton of pressure on myself about breastfeeding, and deal with a lot of mom guilt. It’s harder than actually giving birth and pregnancy and no one prepared you for it. Everyone always asked what I needed in regards to diapers, clothes, etc. but noone asks how your head space is and they talk to the partners about PPD more than the mom. I’m getting a lot better and I’m so glad you are too. Thank you for talking openly! And congratulations!! Addition: I also deal with body dysmorphia and was preparing for a fitness competition when I found out I was pregnant. However I’ve always gained weight quickly and have to work extremely hard to work it off. It’s so hard because I have t lost weight, and I feel a lot of eyes on me because of my previous progress and it’s something I struggle with daily. All you can do is try to involve baby in walks and remember to give yourself time. EXTRA ADDITION! I also deal with OCD! I have had OCD since I was little with counting this and now it formed into keeping things clean around the baby and making sure cleaning chemicals don’t get in her body and stuff. I worry a lot about where my baby is, I work from home and am with her all day every day. So anytime dad takes her with him to the store or to grandparents house to let me have some time alone, sometimes I have to call or text him to reassure me that she’s with him. This is why I don’t go to my gym anymore, I’ve taken her to the daycare and been prettified that someone can just take her, especially when they’re super busy. It takes all my focus off of my training so now I just go on walks with her. I try my hardest to fight these things and it can definitely make your brain hurt, lol. But there is absolutely a way to handle it, whether it’s therapy or friends to help take your mind off of if. The best support is talking about it all and yes, we are all very grateful and blessed, but we can be dealing with our human emotions and issues At the same time. Ok, longest comment I’ve ever left! Thank you Colleen! ❤️ ✌🏻

The line that appears during pregnancy is called Linea Nigra. The specific cause of the linea nigra is unknown, but it is believed to be related to the changing hormones or the imbalance of hormones as a result of your developing baby. One theory is that the melanocyte-stimulating hormone created by the placenta is the main contributing factor. This hormone is also believed to cause the darkening around the nipples. With the splitting of your abdomen muscles is called diastasis recti (or abdominal separation). A bulge may be visible down your midline.

nikeyathepoet .__ commenting on a persons body is uncomfortable. no matter what they look like.
@meganwood93764 жыл бұрын
nikeyathepoet.__ I also “snapped back” quickly after giving birth and it made me uncomfortable when people made that same comment. When I heard that comment it made me feel like if I look normal then shouldn’t I “feel” normal even though I knew it would take time to feel like myself. I always responded with, “Well I certainly feel like I had a baby!”

Omg, when she was talking about odor and deodorant stuff she was like, “i used to be fine, and now...” and then and ad came up and it started with, “i started vaping” Me: colleen vapes? (I wasn’t looking at the screen)

Thank you for this 🙌🏻 I just had my daughter almost 2 months ago and I lost the “baby weight” almost right away. I’ve had people tell me that I look better now than I did before I was pregnant...what?!? People are so insensitive..thank you for being so real and honest!!

I had my son 9 months ago and I didn’t ‘bounce back’ I’m a lot heavier than I was before I got pregnant and it’s ruined my mental health being so upset over this new body that didn’t even feel like mine at first! But learning to love myself while I’m learning all about my gorgeous son! I love the way you talk about subjects like this as I can relate so much! ❤️

You’re one of my favorites. Being a woman who’s newly pregnant, this is something I worry and struggle with and I wish more people were open to this in society and not put such pressure on us.

I was my mother’s last child and she still has her stretch marks. This video is really kind and supporting to mothers. She was always self conscious about her body. I just realized how bad she must have felt Love all you mothers ❤️❤️

I’m so happy you made a video on this topic about body positivity! I’m very self-conscious about my stomach, I am thin but my stomach goes out. I would not eat, but it didn’t help. I now realize that this is my body, and I should take care of it instead of hating it.
@kathleenkelly55914 жыл бұрын
I am skinny and my belly sticks out too. if you are a girl/woman it is most likely because it is your uterus and not having extra weight makes it show more. It is an organ and we should not feel bad for it! 💕 I am still learning and dealing with that ideology

I also have dermatillomania and it’s so nice to finally have someone I look up to that also deals with it. It’s so easy to feel alone with non-mainstream disorders

I developed it while I was pregnant 6 years ago and I still struggle until this day. Thankfully I have slowed down and I catch myself when I begin to go into a trance pretty quickly. Recovery is possible 🙏

This video is really inspiring. I know Colleen has always advocated for body positivity, and her accepting her own body is the first step to that. Knowing that through all of this terrible stuff, she is still so positive and healthy.

I have dermatillomania as well. I’ve dealt with it for years and I know how frustrating it can be to explain to people that you can’t just simply stop picking/ripping at your skin. While it has improved drastically, it’s still something I struggle with, and that’s fine. Thank you for talking about it and doing what you can to normalize and destroy the stigma surrounding it. It’s nice to hear people talk about it in a way that doesn’t make it seem like just a “bad habit”, but as a serious issue that many people struggle with ❤️

Same! I have derm, along with trichotillomania (hair pulling), and my scalp is a battlefield of scabs and thin spots XD Kudos to Colleen for shedding some light on the topic, it definitely makes me feel less alone in the struggle

Regarding the weight thing. Intention is everything. I lost 50lbs on my own (no gym and no dietitian) last year and it was HARD! It was probably the hardest thing I had ever had to do thus far. I want praise/validation for that not because I "look good" but because I put A TON of work in to it. So I say, COMPLIMENT ppl on their weight loss, but make sure you're doing it to congratulate their hard work and dedication, not just how they look.

Hannah Rose Reviews I feel the same! I worked hard to lose 50lbs after my second (and last) baby and I appreciated the compliments. I was not comfortable being that heavy and was not able to run after my kids without being out of breath. Losing the weight gave me energy and confidence and that really helped my mental health:)

Society just makes bigger women feel like crap. Everyone is taught that being skinny and looks are more important than being kind and having values/morals . Every woman is beautiful❤️❤️❤️ Edit: Thank you sooooo much for the likes, I didn’t think this would get that big. I only wanted to say my opinion and it turns out a lot of people felt the same way!

Honestly right, why do people want to be skinny. Not being funny but it’s jsur on the other side of the spectrum. It’s like calling someone fat, calling someone skinny is just as bad. Aim to be healthy like whattt? Agree with what u said completely

Hearing you talk about your OCD that comes in the form of skin picking blew my mind. I've been doing the exact same thing to my fingers for the past year or so and, although I knew it was an issue, never realised it was something that had a name or was a type of OCD. Going to go to my doctors next week about it I think.
