Hey Erik, I felt so inclined to comment on the tummy issues conversation because I immediately felt the same way Colleen did, worried. What you were describing is not really normal if it’s happening all the time. ESPECIALLY if you take Tums all the time. It can actually ruin your Microbiome and make everything worse. As someone with chronic health issues, it is possible your body is trying to tell you something. Sure it could just be typical stress from having three little kids and us fresh out of a pandemic trying to still figure life out, blah blah. But also some pretty severe things happened to me over the past couple years, and I wish I was able to get it checked out sooner. You could just be tired of your same old food, and you need some different flavors mixed in with typical stuff, but it might be worth 1- going to the doctor, or 2- looking into food sensitivities or common inflammation foods, like sugar, gluten, seed oils, etc. Hope this is just nothing!

Just an FYI taking Tums all the time isn't bad. My mom has to take 2 Tums before every meal because she's lacking calcium because of dialysis. When a person has chronic kidney disease (CKD) like my mom, it is important that they keep the proper calcium levels in their body. The exact amount should be determined on a case-by-case basis by your doctor. So depending on the case it's not bad but DEFINITELY let your health care provider know your taking it & how often. I'm writing this before Eric is even talking about it. As I'm writing this Colleen is talking about her parrot 🦜 sweatshirt.

Came to say something similar. Not to be catastrophist, but my BIL had frequent indigestion, heartburn, and acid reflux which was a symptom of esophageal cancer. He ignored it for a long time thinking, like you, that it was nothing. Had he gone to a doctor, he may not have passed away. Please get it checked out. What you’re describing is NOT normal.

I have stress-induced IBS that becomes aggravated by lactose & greasy foods. And it’s something that I constantly have to battle with, in every meal, just hoping that my food sits right. Fingers-crossed that’s all it is! Side note, my anxiety is so bad, I have to take Trazodone to sleep at night, & knowing that Erik always has trouble sleeping & eating, I’m still hoping that that’s all it is for him - IBS. Worth speaking to his doc about, ofc

Hi Erik! Your description of your tummy hurting sounded similar to my experience of finding out I'm allergic to gluten. I used to get an upset stomach after breakfast. After years of suffering because I was feeling sick after breakfast, I figured out it was because breakfast was all bread and pancakes and cereal. After I cut out gluten, it was like night and day. For me, it wasn't a lifelong allergy that I discovered because it was just slowly getting worse over the years to the point that I couldn't ignore it. It was disrupting my life, and I had thought it was normal because maybe I had overeaten or not eaten enough. It ended up that I'm actually allergic to the pesticides that are put on wheat, and I had developed an intolerance to them. My body just doesn't break them down anymore. I'm not a doctor, so if you're concerned, check with yours, but narrowing down food groups like wheat, dairy, etc can be a good place to start figuring out what you're potentially sensitive too. Hope you feel better :)

Erik, coming from a nurse I would definitely look in to the stomach issues. Needing to take tums or pepto frequently isn't normal. If you do have something like gastritis or stomach ulcer(s) something like a proton pump inhibitor would do you much more justice and could even allow things to heal so you no longer need anything. It could also be a food intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, or other things. In the mean time avoid alcohol, spicy foods, smoking if you smoke, and highly acidic foods/beverages (the common thing is we think of are fruit juices, but a big one is coffee, especially on an empty stomach, I would avoid though if able as well). But long story short, see your doctor from it. Sincerely a nurse who cares and has seen a lot 😊

A couple things: My mom was very passionate about collecting and still owns some of the McDonald’s toys that were little Madam Alexander dolls that opened and closed their eyes. I know she specifically has a boy in a blue baseball uniform, and a few Wizard of Oz characters. She also was passionate about collecting the Batman glass cups from McDonald’s and still owns them. They also most recently gave out glass authentic Coke glasses in different colors. Of course, my mom still has those too. 😂 I remember the bear beanie babies, I know my mom still had those too! Also with tummy issues, I was in the ER on Super Bowl Sunday with crazy contractions/labor 7/10 abdominal pain, for sure thought I had an ovarian cyst or ovarian torsion. 6 hours later, doc came in and said I had a LARGE bout of constipation and told me that there’s no way to overdose on Miralax, so go home and take 6 doses a day. 💀 I need a crewneck too. Also can think of some collectible spoons and maybe some spinning tops as prizes in cereal in the 2000’s. Lastly, does anyone remember the coupon dispensers (I live in Utah so it was Smith’s/Kroger stores specifically) that would eject coupons that you could stack and save so much money. That was my job to collect as many as I could at the grocery store with my mom.

One of the best things you can do to improve gut health is to avoid coffee before food. It's way too acidic to put on an empty stomach and causes damage to the lining of the gut leading to leaky gut which then causes not only digestive distress but also malabsorption and food sensitivities. Ginger is soothing to the gut and marshmallow root infusion and aloe juice help coat and heal the lining of the stomach. Also, age and stress both decrease stomach acid and digestive enzymes, both of which are needed for good gut health. Using digestive bitters on the tongue before every meal can retrain the stomach to produce adequate amounts of acid and enzymes to improve gut health. 😊 Learned all this the hard way after ending up with lots of digestive issues post gallbladder removal (something the Dr's told tell you is incredibly common) and currently working on healing hubbys gut with the above protocol. Just some thoughts that might help decrease stomach aches and nausea after food. 😊

As we get older new allergies might become more apparent which is the downside of eating badly as a young person or eating too much processed foods. Erik might be developing food allergies or his body just telling him to eat certain foods in moderation (carbs, dairy etc). I can’t eat wheat or gluten products anymore, sad but I learned to live with it now. So maybe use process of elimination to figure out what foods cause the most gas or tummy aches. One day leave out all dairy, see if your tummy is giving trouble, one day leave out all carbs etc. By the way, as a quick fix, a small pinch of fennel after meals prevents bloating and most related minor tummy aches, plus it’s all natural. Research or consult a naturopath dr first before getting unnatural treatments.

Insomnia death comment - umm yes you can die from lack of sleep, but it is not from brain rot. Your body recovers during sleep and if you don’t sleep it puts stress on your organs and can eventually lead to stroke, heart attack etc. The longest document case of insomnia was 11days. So if you do not sleep at all for at MOST 11 days you will likely die. That is also why sleep deprivation is a form of psychological torture.

In the UK arcades are an integral part of the typical British summer holiday. In every seaside town you can find several arcades in a row, and it wouldn’t feel like a holiday if you didn’t visit at least once. There are also arcades for over 18’s only where you win real money. We also have a game show called Tipping Point which is a huge machine like the one which Erik was talking about which pushes the coins off, except it’s big counters where you win money and prizes. Kind of stupid but addictive to watch.

question for erik’s dad (don’t mind that it is completely unrelated to the episode it’s just something i’ve always wondered and nobody knows the answer too): apparently billions are categorised differently in america and the uk, (i think it’s 100 mil in america and a million mil in england). if this is true, then is there 8 million million people in the world or 8 hundred million? it’s obviously different and it’s always confused me! love the podcast and fingers crossed you see this!💗

I believe that it’s 1000 million in a billion 😊 so it goes 999million (999,999,999) then to 1billion (1,000,000,000).. so that would mean that there’s 8,000 million people in the world 😊 surely that’s universal? 😂 although America do other numbers/ measurements very differently so that would make sense 😂
