To clarify, I am in community college cause I was testing the waters and turns out I definitely want to be an engineer! So now I am in the midst of figuring out either continuing on to a bachelors, or going straight to grad. Any suggestions people? people over value "the paper". i blame recruiters for that, they are inadequate to sift through potential candidates. so, they use paperwork to eliminate candidates. this guy is not even graduated from computer science, eliminate. GPA under 3.0, eliminate etc. etc. john carmack does not even have a degree, but he is one of the legendary programmers. if a potential john carmarck applies a job today, HR will eliminate him because he does not have a degree. The CS job market is really tanking for new comers; three of my recent graduate friends have still not found a job since last year, yet, for some reason, 2 others that had experience found one within 2-3 months after graduating since they had experience. In short, it is still solid for folks with experience based on what I have seen from myself, friends and family. Going for a second degree may not be the best choice depending on your financial situation, especially here in the U.S. an advanced degree aka continuing to get a Masters in the same degree is shorter and looks better on a resume. HR usually asks about the highest level of education, not how many degrees. Take what I said with a grain of salt; it is only based on my bubble.

This video came at such a perfect timing. I’m currently studying CS (second year) and I’m already considering going to another university to study either mech or elec engineering after finishing my CS degree. I don’t like college at all, but I’ve realized that I am genuinely interested in engineering enough to go to university for a second time to study it. Like you said, if you see that you are willing to suffer for something (and in my case, put money into it, because currently I have certain financial benefits that allow me to study basically debt free in my current college) then it’s a good indication that you like it/are interested in it (which applies to a lot more than just a college degrees). I’m still planning on completing my CS degree, just to prove to myself that I can finish something (CS is actually my second attempt at a degree, I’m actually a third year student but second year CS student). I like CS enough to study it, but I’m not much interested in working solely on software or data. Plus, having a degree in both CS and either mech or elec gives you a well-rounded knowledge on certain topics, specifically if you combine cs with elec engineering, or so I’ve read. So maybe completing CS will be a better choice for me. I hope your experience with engineering is much better than that with cs. And let’s see how things go. Anyhow, thank you for thus video and I look forward to further ones (I love this channel).

You are feeling depressed because you’re struggling to find a job that uses your degree, and getting another engineering degree might not actually be the answer. It seems like you are doing it as a way to escape the reality of the job market, even though you already know there’s no guarantee of a job at the end of that path either. I went through something similar. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, finished at the top of my class, and passed the FE exam. Yet, after a year of applications, I couldn’t find work as a mechanical engineer. My backup plan was to pursue software engineering, and thankfully, I found a job in that field. Looking back, I wouldn’t go back to mechanical or any other type of engineering. If you’d like my advice, I would be happy to help. I am sure there are better options for you than going back to college for another degree.

Thank you for the advice, but getting another degree is not my "answer" to not being able to get a job in comp sci. It is just me doing something I should have done fours ago. I am not going to force myself down a path I don't want to take just because "getting another degree is going to take a while and its not going to guarantee me a job." 1. Use your GenEd courses to refine your communication skills. Knowing how to speak, present ideas, and read with understanding is important. You will *always* need to learn more in whatever field you're in, and you likely won't get it at college - as stupid as it sounds, no matter what your major is you'll never learn enough. 2. Everyone learns differently. Watch videos, take notes, record lectures (where allowed), do a little bit of everything until a pattern emerges that works for you - and find more than one method, because one may not be available sometimes. Also, note taking doesn't have to be super organized at the time. Write a number and scribble down an idea or a page number. Don't get caught in the details. Just write down what it will take to remind you of what the concept was. 3. If you are attending a publicly funded school, remember that the school is motivated to see you graduate. Here's the thing most students don't know: if you are stressed or your life has hit a bump - maybe you got sick for several weeks, the school can provide programs to help you. It may delay your graduation (they may move your classes to another term), or they might find funds to help pay for a single semester, or several other things. Life happens, but schools have programs to help - but *you* have to tell your advisor and be willing to work with them. Also, if it's just one course you can try asking an instructor for an extension, but it's often better to ask your advisor. The school will then reach out to your instructor(s) to see if they are willing to work with the school. As an instructor, I prefer for the school's retention coordinator to assist in working with the student. It's sort of like a contract between the school and the student to encourage them to not procrastinate. 4. Ask questions - for the love of everything... I have students who either never ask any questions or wait until a deadline before asking questions. Your instructor hates it when you don't ask questions and despises it when you wait until the last second. Seriously. If you ask me early in the week, I have lots more time then and I can take more time to explain extra things you might be missing. I also cannot read your mind. When I taught CompSci in the classroom I walked around the lab when students were there (I'm old - computers where in labs, or terminals for mainframes were in labs). As I walked around in the lab, I could sometimes see that a student was having a problem by the look on their face. However, I teach online now and am completely dependent on students asking questions. If you work on projects for a classroom on a home computer/laptop I'd still not be able to see your face if I wasn't walking around. 5. Modern CompSci is sometimes taught wrong IMHO. There's no explanation as to what comes *before* you start coding on the keyboard. That's wrong, and far too many schools have brushed that away with RAD tools. Nobody discusses proper GUI development either, or the necessary psychology needed to understand it (even though it'd only take a few minutes to read about some necessary basics in a $5 book on the topic). OK - enough of my rants. I'm not at all sure that getting a second bachelors is worth your money. Most of it will be a recap of GenEd. You'll have around 6-8 courses tied to your engineering degree. You could have taken them separately, unless the GenEd courses were more than five years old. Then you'd likely be required to take them. You might also have been better with certificates covering the same material. Most jobs these days only look to see that you completed some college, then look to see what certificates you have. I'm sure your college didn't tell you that.

Genuine Question: Did you look into going into a Master's Program? Almost no one needs a second bachelors. You perhaps would need to take a pre-req or two but with a degree in Mathematics, a graduate program would have certainly accepted you. Unless of course you specifically don't want a Master's for whatever reason. Truly though there is almost no reason to re-do a 4 year. A Master's would be a higher level degree in the subject matter, that you would achieve in half the time. Once again though not trying to be rude or anything (I've been told I'm not good with tone), but genuinely wondering about the thought process. Hope it all works out.

I'd add: 1. Try to understand which processes you enjoy. It can be easy to get caught up in some end goal you want to achieve, but jobs are mostly you doing something. You may think, "I want to help dogs," but if you don't enjoy the process of helping dogs, you won't like the job. So think back on the things in life you've enjoyed doing and ask yourself which parts of the process of doing them you enjoyed. 2. Try to understand which types of suffering don't bother you as much as others. I struggle with planning, but physical pain has never bothered me that much. I've always been able to work through it. These two things can help narrow down the types of jobs you might want to look for.

hello Maria, you can choose between different paths : - in my mind people with CS degree often pursue in masters and PhD to work in academia (in theoritical CS, Compilation etc but that's another topic...) but i totally understand if it's not your preferred path - with you background in maths (statistics, linear algebra, calculus, analysis) you could get into Data Science/ML/DL but it's up to you to see if it would be a good fit - since you said you were interested into electrical engineering, this can have ties with low level development and critical/embedded systems (C, assembly, unix like kernels, computer/CPU architecture, FPGA), and fourier/signals analysis in maths - there is also web development but I don't advice it to you, since web frameworks change too often. However, if you need to find a freelance job quickly, web dev can be a solution. - ... and also mobile development (java/kotlin + Objective-C/Swift or react native) - ... and many more like network/cloud engineer, sysadmin, devops or ops I might have omitted

If everything you are being taught is dreadfully boring and aggravating and no fun, that may be a good sign that a career path ain’t it, and it’s very likely that there is something else out there that you actually do like learning and would enjoy focusing on. Better to make the change now than wish you did 30 years down the line 🤷

Where I did university, it was possible to combine two degrees in a massive multi-year grind. In my case CS and Engineering. Looking back, there are a lot of people who change careers (Physics into CS, engineering into biological science etc) where the pivot doesn't require a full other degree though.

I’m a CS major and mostly interested in Discrete Math. Eventually I have to take a class called Automata Theory which I hear is more like Discrete Math. So, I’m looking forward to that. I kinda want to just take more theory classes instead. I look at other Engineering majors and what they have to take, and it’s not interesting to me. So, I stick to Computer Science. Anyway, thanks for the reminder how Education is our responsibility. It really is🧐

I'm genuinely curious - can one not instead do a Masters degree in Engineering? I'm British so maybe it works differently over here, but I think it's quite possible to do a Masters degree in Engineering or similar with just a Bachelor in Maths or CS. It only takes 1 year and costs a fraction of the amount. You could literally do a master AND phd in the time it would take to do a second bachelors in the US. My impression too is that the bar is lifting such that many jobs now expect a Masters degree or higher for roles that previously only wanted a Bachelor (whether the job description qdmits this or not...) Good for you for following your heart on something you feel you should have done earlier but I would caution others to consider alternatives.
@3beltwestyАй бұрын
In the usa an ABET accredited engineering degree for say a BS in EE ME CE etc has core courses. If you leapfrog those to get a Masters then there are holes in your education. Ie abet requires semester of static dynamics thermodynamics materials. Often 3 physics semesters. Then if to be a ME machine design. Control systems. graphics. Then often 2 semesters of senior level courses. So like 2 years at least to get a BS So if goober university grants a masters with just 1 year without core courses you really are not an engineer since skipped basic requirements. Means you probably cannot ever be a professional engineer licensed one.. Also getting a masters in engineering in 1 year with no prior engineering courses would look weird on resume. Ie how did they take 2 to 3 years courses in 1 year?
