My aunt was dating a guy with schizophrenia and yeah, when he was on his meds, he was fine. But then he would decide he didn't need them any more and quit taking them and start acting out again. He would do things like throw all my aunts belongings in the dumpster for no reason or go to church with my grandparents and growl at people. a very close friend of mine went through the same thing. paranoid schizophrenia is horrifying. they really, truly believe that their lives are at risk & that the world is out to get them, including doctors. I tried to get him help, even getting him in contact with his long-disowned family & getting him a place to stay when he was homeless, but ultimately all they did was send him to church, exacerbating his symptoms & causing him to believe unspeakable & truly horrifying things. I haven't spoken to him in a long time because of the emotional toll it all took on me, just from the few years where he started going downhill, and he deleted all social media out of fear, so I have no way of reaching him anymore. god, I hope he's okay.

I’m diagnosed with schizophrenia and have researched it a bunch. If you kill someone, even if you have schizophrenia or anything else, I genuinely believe you should not be allowed out of professional supervision, best case in a facility or group home. You should be held accountable for what you did no matter what one way or another as well. If that’s what you’re capable of off your meds, you need to have someone make sure you are taking your medication, WATCHING you take it and checking after you didn’t hide it under your tongue or something. Also, keep in mind the average age of onset for schizophrenia is around 18, and can hit you like a truck out of nowhere with nothing but maybe a history of depression and mood swings. Psychosis also usually doesn’t just hit and last for a few hours then go away, it’s more like it lessens or worsens at times, and it can be made a lot worse in response to stress. Though it IS possible, I don’t believe it’s the norm for people like me unless some severe stress or anxiety hit you at that time. It’s entirely possible for him to have been in psychosis even earlier and not premeditated in a sane mind, or it could have been even going on for weeks unnoticed until that night. Schizophrenia can go undiagnosed very easily because it can be easily masked or just passed off as someone being a bit odd, my parents had no idea and I had been hearing and seeing things (on a lesser scale until it really hit me years later) as young as kindergarten from what I remember, but I thought it was normal because I wasn’t necessarily “hearing voices” like you see depicted in media. It was more like stuff most people would say is paranormal or explain away as ghosts. Whispers, someone calling your name when no one is there, shadows in the corner of your eyes etc. Also just want to note that people with schizophrenia are statistically more likely to be victims than perpetrators. We’re more likely more scared of others than anything. TLDR schizophrenia is not what the media says, if you kill someone in psychosis you shouldn’t be allowed unsupervised, GIVE THERAPY AND BETTER TREATMENT TO VICTIMS WTF IS WRONG WITH THE COURT like shit yeah we need help but if you hurt someone THEY NEED IT MORE. If you want to learn more about schizophrenia and what it’s really like I recommend Living Well With Schizophrenia, the KZbin channel. Amazing people 💕
@teodorasavoiu46642 жыл бұрын
Thanks for making all these points explicit. If we were to believe the media, movies and how a lot of mass murderers are talked about, we'd think it's the mental illness causing the violence. But that's completely false and in majority of cases mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of violence. In my opinion this guy was pretty leniently judged by the court, possibly because of his father's status and connections. And I'm pretty sure the police officers themselves would have been far more violent while apprehending if he were a random mentally ill dude and not his father's son. Had he been a random citizen with schizophrenia, perhaps a person of colour, he probably wouldn't even be alive to stand trial, or he'd be kept in prison indefinitely. But from an outside perspective, for a certain category of people the mental illness and schizophrenia card seem to be played to give them more freedom. This perpetuates the false idea that people who suffer from schizophrenia are inherently potentially dangerous, when in reality they're very much the opposite.

April 14 is my birthday and 2014 was a rough year...So terrifying how completely unprovoked and unforeseen this was. My heart to these students' souls and their loved ones. Glad he still at least went to trial, and the parents aren't justifying it at all. Peace to them as well...

can the public not rally against this and keep him locked up or supervised? i would be terrified not knowing that a murderer of 5 walked freely among me
@heatherlynn46522 жыл бұрын
I know it's less appropriate to empathize with a murder's family... but just imagine you think you've raised a perfect little family. And then out of nowhere, at least to you, your child murders someone and your entire world is turned upside down. I would be so confused and lost. Obviously it's not the same as your child being gone forever, that's much worse, but it is life destroying

i think it’s reasonable to sympathize with a family who was completely unaware of their child’s metal state or violent capabilities. i feel conflicted about this family though because they knew something was off and knew he needed help but at the same time i don’t think they came to the conclusion that he was a danger to anyone but himself. regardless, knowing that the kid you raised took other peoples lives and suffers from psychotic episodes is always going to be a hard pill to swallow. it’s 50/50 on this one for me.

Being completely honest, I had a psychotic break when I was still using. It was then that I understood how terrifying schizophrenia could be. I was talking to my vents thinking it was connected to one of my friends and they were spying on me, talking about me. I HAD MY MOM COME UP TO THE VENT AND LISTEN TO IT. She screamed at me and said to get off the drugs. I sat there shocked she didn’t hear it. I saw someone in my closet telling me to help them to get out of there. A full human being in my closet, that I was speaking to. No one was in my closets or my vents. I didn’t understand what was happening and that was the scariest part of it all. A lot led up to that moment, so I’m happy he didn’t get put in prison. He needed that help, he needed that understanding of what happened to him. I still looked back on that with a huge pit in my stomach. It sucks it really sucks. I regret it all. I presume he feels the same way. I don’t think he should be let out or have unsupervised visit. But I seen nothing wrong with supervised visits in access to the Internet, and things like that. I’m so sorry for the family’s who had to suffer through this, and they still don’t deserve their children’s killer walking around freely.

This is such an interesting topic especially taking the focus on rehabilitation for inmates and those who have committed major crimes. While it could be considered social change, which it should be important for governing bodies to focus on a rehabilitation for inmates, it is also important to consider the circumstances. While he may have been in a manic psychosis episode there’s no way to really assess his capacity to be compliant once released. Living in a group home there is only so much that staff can do but also who is to say the capacity for him to be rehabilitated isn’t there? I think more research and better understanding for these topics is really needed before decisions can be made. I would likely think that he would need immense monitoring due to the nature of his crime and how severe it was. He may be medicated and doing well but he is also mandated to do so while living in a mental institution. I appreciate your content so much Hailey!! Love the thought provoking questions at the end especially for tough cases such as this

You should check out the case of Matthew Hoffman who in 2010 killed two women and a child, cut them up, stuffed them in trash bags and put them in the hollow of a tree. It happened in Mount Vernon Ohio which is about 45 minutes from where I live. One of the ladies names was Tina and my daughter worked with her mom up until a couple months ago. My best friend used to babysit both of her kids and was very close to the family. It's a horrendous case and you should look into it

It is totally heartbreaking when you have a loved one with squizoprenia. Like watching the old movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," that young man or woman you have come to adore has their mind kidnapped by evil forced unseen. Some will become paranoid of others and many many other's end their own lives before they are able to get the help they so desperate deserve. It's the saddest thing ever to watch the quick progression of and the alienation of friends and family. They themselves are oftentimes so overwhelmed that they will push away those they love the most when they need them the most. Only with prayer, determination, fortitude, and lots of luck a sick person will seek out help with the help of an educated society. If the society is not educated than many sick people can stay sick and even die or others may die. A person going through psychosis, as long as they haven't hurt anyone does not need jail at all, but needs to go to a hospital. Hope this helps anyone going through this. Everyone deserves a chance at a life of Peace and Happiness.
