15:08 to defend Drew Allar we probably have the worst WR room out of all the playoff teams and most of the power 4 conferences. We don’t have a #1 receiver. We have a room full of #2 and #3 receivers. The saving grace has been Tyler Warren.
@seanwoodrow108521 сағат бұрын
Yeah almost every QB state like YPA, completion rate, etc requires 2 guys for every one of those completions to be successful… the guy throwing the ball and the guy catching the ball. If there’s nobody open to catch the ball, then throwaways and desperate throws into covered receivers are going to lower the qbs YPA. We can talk about how Allars YPA drops significantly against good defenses, but is it not possible that against a good secondary, his receivers just can’t get open and don’t win contested catches? while those receivers are somewhat able to out-athlete bad secondaries? No doubt that Josh is right, he does have some issues with mechanics at times, but the list of 20 year old college QBs who look perfect under pressure is quite short. Pretty sure if DA is throwing to osu’s WR room, he’d have significantly higher YPA.

Allar's receivers simply drop catchable balls and difficult catches they should make at this level of competition, that being said, Allar is not errant often.

I think the money is on ND because all the models are pickingND I’ve seen some metrics that have ND as high as -6 most are hovering around ND -3. You guys have the lowest model I’ve seen at ND -1.5. The spread has been right around ND -1.5 to -2.5. ND is also 25.7 in fpi while PSU is 21.3. That’s such a big gap. When you look at the raw stats it doesn’t make since but when you start to get into the advanced stats especially on defense you start to really see the separation between the teams. PSU also miss a ton of tackles which means ND will likely have some huge plays in the run game because of how explosive the ND RBs are.

I love all the prognostication we all put into college football, but more so I love the surprises that we all seem to have when the game is finally played and our speculations may smear egg on our faces. This is why I really hate the whole ranking system..."this can beat any other team any given Saturday on a neutral field" or "this team would have beaten that team 9 times of 10, you just got us on our bad day." This why we play the games! Teams RARELY get multiple chances to play a team twice in a season. You have 1 chance to prove you are the best. If you can't get 'er done, you ain't the best! Shoulda, coulda, woulda...blah, blah, blah. I'm looking forward to this round of games. I actually was excited about most of the CFP games so far...except the rematch of OSU and Oregon. I'm just happy to see all the new match ups that have been decades or never have been.
@tomwillcutts291820 сағат бұрын
For all your criticism of Riley Leonard ... you have ND scoring over 20 and 24. If they're that successful offensively - they probably win. And here is a metric your system appears to overlook - missed tackles. ND (as you saw against Geo) is one of the best on this stat and PSU is pretty bad. ND beat Geo w/o their RBs having good games - if PSU misses tackles against the ND RBs - they take it to the house or near to it. It appears the FB guys like Klatt and Urban Meyer like ND and stats/nerd types like PSU - we'll see, Klatt is well over 60% against the spread this year.

I don't see the elite on the offensive line. Your RG clearly has a significant ankle or lower leg injury and your left tackle is vulnerable to a speed rush, he is talented but he has issues with how he moves his feet on speed rush and he is susceptible to being beaten around the edge by someone capable.

I've got PSU 21-17. My worry as a Penn State fan is Franklin overthinking big moments. But overall, I think Penn State's run game is playing its best at the right time. I suspect Abdul Carter will be spying Leonard when he's in as he's most equipped to stop the QB run and it's a way to try to avoid contact every play with his injury. Love being hurt I think makes a big difference in their run game as well.

If ND were a bit healthier I’d maybe give them the slight edge. But with their multiple DT injuries and Love in a knee brace, I’d say PSU just has more avenues to win. PSU should be able to run the ball, and and Warren are good enough to hit a few explosive pass plays. Maybe Leonard has some success on the ground early. But with the amount of hits he’ll have to take I don’t see it continuing throughout the second half. Psu has a better defense than uga and ND had like 3.8 YPA and 4.2 YPC in that game. Just seems like a game where ND needs a +2 turnover margin to win.

I think something you are missing on your analysis with the ND defense is that they purposefully let you run. Al Golden runs a wonky system that clearly actually works pretty well. If you watch the team play, half of the run snaps you end up with two or three ND lineman four yards in the backfield on a running play, which means that the running back gets past them, and gets good yardage. That is until that one freak time when they tackle you for a four yard loss. And then you are behind the sticks and ND's excellent pass defense gets to have its day. It is a moderately high risk, very high reward style of play that has driven me, as an ND fan, nuts all year. I want my lineman to play gap sound football against the run, and ND just doesn't. They will let you get yards because they would rather try and get you into passing situations. But they do not have to play like that, and it shows in the Georgia game. Georgia could do nothing against the ND defense in the run game. ND has purposefully made themselves a lesser, while still good, but not elite run defense. But they do not have to play that way, and Golden has shown himself to be extremely flexible in how he approaches the defense. If ND loses this game, it will not be because the defense can't stop the run. It will be because the offense can't move the ball.
@josephmoya509819 сағат бұрын
I can see why you all are picking Penn St. But you are wild to pick this game going into the 20s. This game might not even break the teens. My prediction is Notre Dame 13, Penn St. 10. They have learned by leaps and bounds since NIU and have been locked in on stopping the run. Who cares if Miami of Ohio runs the ball well against you when you’re up 28-3? Especially if they’re not scoring points during that… Al Golden has been perfectly content to let teams down multiple scores to run out their own clock. If Penn state plays nd like they did Boise state leonard will show that he's a better quarterback than madsen who threw 300 yards O.O all you have to do is hit the open guy because penn state can't live in cover 1. Notre dame thrives there. 24-16 Irish

One of the reasons your run defense stats for ND are off is because they dramatically improved in the 2nd half of the year. They were authentically not that great stopping the run earlier in the season. Not to say PSU can’t have success running, but ND’s whole season stats are a bit misleading there.

@@lukekrell5665 Only realistic prediction I have seen. I think people predicting this game into the twenties are nutter butters. This is gonna be ugly. Or if you are a connoisseur of defense, like myself, it will be a thing of beauty. Nothing is more boring than two defense that can't fight their way out of a paper bad.

The Penn State offense has became incredibly overrated after running it up against 3 bad defenses in a row. Will be exposed for what they are. ND wins this game if they can break into the 20s

Love the ND hate and that’s okay you either love ND or you hate them.. PSU hasn’t played anybody. Easiest CFP run.. talking down about NDs offense vs Georgia.. they didn’t have to do anything or show anything bc they had the game in control for the entirety of the 60min. Dumb talking heads never give ND credit for anything.. beat IU when everyone said they wouldn’t.. beat the SEC champ who WON the title bc of Stockton NOT bc of Beck(who’s ass btw his draft stock proves that in a poor QB class). When PSU chokes(as you all will call it) we can come back to this conversation. ND is the most injured team in the CFP coming in and even more so now, yet they are still causing havoc and the haters can’t handle NDs success bc they are one of the only team in the nation that can actually survive and succeed as an independent.. 🐸☕️

ND played 12 regular season games. 7/12 were against bottom 30 passing teams in college football. Army (last), Navy (3rd to last), NIU, Stanford, Purdue, Marshall, FSU. NDs passing defense is good but not as good as the numbers suggest.
