In some ways, being more sensitive is a good thing. Understanding the struggles certain groups face, and letting people express their emotions are good things. The problem is that a massive portion of society has taken this way too far. Being insensitive is bad, but so is being oversensitive. Nowadays people get furious and outraged over the tiniest little things, and see evil everywhere. We need the right amount and the right kind of sensitivity. Perfectly balanced. As all things should be.

I'm as liberal as they come, and I love taboo humor about race/gender/sexuality as long as it doesn't come from a place of genuine hatred. Now, you go back to the '80s and listen some of the "jokes" Sam Kinison (a legendary comedian) did about gay people and AIDS...terribly dated. It was cruel, hateful and uneducated. Humor has be allowed to push the boundaries and make people uncomfortable, but it should NEVER punch down at the marginalized of society. The joke that got this guy kicked out was edgy, but also funny, true, and came from a place of empathy, not scorn. He was empathizing with the difficulty black people have in our society, and ridiculing the notion that anyone would choose to be gay given the historical hostility towards them. Even if a white guy (not an Asian) had told the joke, it would still have been valid.

I think it's sad and pathetic that we can't even handle songs that people could handle in the '50s. Baby, It's Cold Outside isn't a date rape song. It's about a guy putting his best (non-rapey) moves on his girl to get her to stay overnight so he can some. He's just trying to convince her. And if you watch the movie where the song originated, it's sung again later by another couple with the roles reversed. And the woman singing Ricardo Montalban's role is much more aggressive with her date. But that's okay because she was a woman, right? That's the usual "logic."

Its very simple. If someone is saying things that promotes or encourages hate toward any group of people then its offensive and shouldn't be tolerated. If its a person just cracking jokes about different groups of people then its either funny or if you don't like it then leave.
Lets look at it from a different stand point. I wouldn’t necessarily say that society is way too sensitive now days, id say that equality has caught up. African Americans have been fighting for equality for decades. Homosexuals the same. We are at a time where both have a strong voice and there’s certain things you can’t say because it offends those communitys and rightly so. So in a way you could say that finally people are standing up for them and stopping the bullshit. Society has always walked the line between sensitivity and normality. To say that society is way too pussified than it ever was however is plain wrong Kristian. There were literally federal rules about things you couldn’t say in the early to mid 20th century, content you couldn’t discuss and consistent legal shutdowns of people that wanted to discuss a particular shutdown or something. None of that is happening right now. People can be reactionary nowadays especially with multiple platforms to fuel their social media gratification for doing so but I think it’s way too easy to blame it on a hypersensitive society that’s always been a vocal minority and existed on both sides. I agree with you on shutting down people’s mics is a bad idea but it’s also a private event so the people in charge can technically do that even though they were wrong. I kinda view this point you’re making in the same lens when Steve Carrell said that current society would not like the office because they’re too sensitive even though the number of people currently watching The Office says otherwise. Just my 2 cents.

If you ban jokes about these kinda of subjects, guess what, you won't get all that much progress in changing society. History has told us time and again, you try to force your values on others while trying to prevent them from giving their own opinion's then your crusade will fail miserably and will probably only end up making things worse. Unfortunately people on the hard left haven't learn't from mistakes of the past and one day they will all be called out on their BS and their worlds will start to crumble around them.
