You don't even need Abram's recent quotes. Just watch TLJ. It's blatant that Johnson didn't care about EP 7 and was off to do his own thing. He was like a bull in a china shop. It is so baffling how TLJ got made. How was it approved, there was no oversight at all. How does this even happen? It also surprises me when I hear people praise TLJ. Like did we see the same film? I took my (then) almost 11 year old. After the movie, I asked how she liked it. She was pretty ho hum about it. She later admitted that it wasn't great, and I agreed with her. I asked if she wanted to see Solo when it came on Netflix (because neither of us cared to see it in theatres), she said "nah". I asked her recently if she wanted to see Episode 9, and she said "not really". Hell, I even asked if she wanted to see the teaser trailer for Ep 9, and she just shrugged. This is a girl that absolutely LOVED the original trilogy when I showed it to her. Now I can't get her to watch any of them.. TLJ just drained any interest in star wars for her. I would say that maybe her case is unique. But then you look at Merchandise sales for TLJ, and they are way down. So in my day, kids loved Han, Luke, Leia, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, so on and so forth. I knew lots of kids that collected a lot of those figures. Now kids are like "Snoke? Some wrinkly guy in a gold bath robe? Hux, some stupid guy that shouts a lot? Kylo Ren, that dude he waxes his chest and wears high pants, Poe, that guy that's dumb and screws everthing up, Finn, who tries to run away yet again and is completely uninteresting? Phasma, who is supposed to be so bad ass, but gets bested so easily, Luke, who does nothing, then dies? Purple Haired lady, who is just there. Stuttering John, who is a criminal, and then betrays Finn and Rose, and is also uninteresting. Rose.. who cares about Rose. Every character is so uninteresting. Who are you supposed to root for?

I’d love to see George Lucas Outline for what he wrote for Luke.
@EthanLaughs5 жыл бұрын
I agree, J. VIII almost made it a point to crap on every question VII raised. It's not as simple as, "it just didn't go where you wanted it to." It was essentially as if someone that didn't fall in love with the original trilogy and didn't really care about the direction VII appeared to be going, made episode VIII in a contrarian fashion. Even so, I think Kristian is right. I think many fans that don't care for VIII would have probably gone along with it if they had treated Luke's character with respect. Taking the bravest most optimistic character in the universe and turning him into a clown was just too much.

@Sam_T20005 жыл бұрын
1 # - I would disagree, but was there anything at all that was logical about that script?
@HickoryDickory865 жыл бұрын
And what makes it all worse is that they had two different outlines at different times, and followed not a single one of them! At first they had George Lucas' outline for a sequel trilogy. Michael Arndt was brought in to write the first screenplay using that outline. He was made to rewrite it because Luke would overshadow all the new characters every time he was in the scene (as you would expect to happen naturally). But eventually he was let go and his script discarded and J.J. brought on Lawrence Kasdan and they did their own thing. The J.J. provides both Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow an outline for Episodes VIII and IX respectively, to give them an idea of where he planned this story to go. Rian threw out J.J.'s outline in favor of doing his own thing, which then put Colin in a bind and let to him eventually being let go over "creative differences" (from hints dropped by both Colin and mark Hamill, that "creative difference" was apparently whether or not Luke was alive and well in Episode IX). Rian doing this also forced J.J. to change a few things he had planned for the end of Episode VII as well; namely, Rey was to find Luke floating cross-legged in meditation, with rocks and boulders floating around him-meaning he was still very much in connection with the Force. But Rian's direction forced him to change that scene at the last minute in his own movie, despite where he had planned the story to go. So yeah, at different times they had two different outlines to follow, and neither of them were followed. The first fault lies with Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams for not sticking to George Lucas' outline and fleshing that out over the whole trilogy. The second lies with Rian Johnson for not respecting and conforming to the new vision set by J.J.

A lot of fans and critics talk about how the studio should not interfere in a film and give the director and writers etc as much creative freedom as possible. Eventually some studio producers cave in to this flawed logic- particularly Disney and its bought products (the Netflix Marvel shows had the same issue, leading us to the disappointment that was Defenders). In this case, if they don't like it, they just fire the guys and replace them, wasting everyones time; if they do like it, they let them go nuts and make a mess of things. It shouldn't be an either-or thing; it should be perfectly balanced between both sides. But unfortunately, a lot of directors (such as Rian Johnson) prize creative freedom over narrative consistency, and studios think that's what the fans want (which some do, but it isn't always a good idea, especially for big long-term projects, although maybe another concern is that in the age of the internet long-term plans might be leaked so making things up as you go along keeps a lid on that?). That said, they did have a ROUGH idea of where things were going- after all, both TFA and TLJ are basically just rip-offs of the OT, so they do in fact have some kind of template to work off of, just a very lazy one.
@williamQUIQUEREE15 жыл бұрын
Its because as soon as Disney bought LucasFilm they immediately wanted a return on their $4b investment. So they rushed Force Awakens into theatres as soon as they could. What some people seem to forget is that JJ was announced to return BEFORE The Last Jedi came out, so it not like it was a knee-jerk response to the backlash. Plus, I also think that Carrie Fisher's passing is a big reason why Episode 9 got rewritten; she said Leia was supposed to have a bigger role in this movie.

Such a tragedy what has been done to George Lucas' baby and life's work that is the 40 year in the making Star Wars saga story... J.J Abrams should have helmed the entire trilogy if they were going to throw out Lucas' and Arndt's original story treatment. Utter incompetence what they allowed Rian Johnson to do.

"Why are you guys so pissed?" Seriously Roxy? Let's start with the fact that having no overarching narrative for a TRILOGY makes the point of a TRILOGY pointless. You need direction, and focus to tell a coherent story. Die hard Star Wars fans like myself want Star Wars to succeed, but as of now it's struggling because people who don't care about the story are in charge.

Dude, listen to yourself. You're talking about people who comment online, go on forums, etc... Those are hardcore fans. Most of the people on this panel are one the reasons the fan base is so divided. I will try to do my best and translate my frustration with these goons. The fact that this trilogy’s story was not planned isn’t a surprise and shouldn’t really come as one. They try and defend their opinion on the lack of planning of the original trilogy but leave out a lot of important information in what actually happened. Remember folks, the original trilogy didn’t intend to have Leah as Luke’s sister until written in by Kasdan and Lucas in the 80s. They needed Luke to get angry enough to come out of hiding to face his father. This goes for Empire as well. To act like Star Wars in general is planned out is just silly. Anybody who knows Star Wars enjoys The Last Jedi and can agree it has some of the greatest moments in the saga. Luke’s arc from optimistic farm boy to cynical hermit is great and after watching it a dozen more times I really couldn’t see him any other way. It didn’t go as you expected but that’s part of it. The humor didn’t always hit with me (keep in mind some of the jokes are for children) and some of the pacing was weird on Canto Bight but that’s just me nitpicking. What Luke did at the end of Last Jedi was far more remarkable than a light saber fight at the end. Connecting himself back to the force and projected himself across the Galaxy to teach Kylo one last lesson. Also, the score was great. I’m just so sick and tired of people complaining about the Last Jedi and Luke’s death. My dudes, nobody is ever really gone. Get the heck over it. We lost so many great characters down the line. Also, Luke would be able to push the story much further as a force ghost. "Luke wouldn’t try and kill Kylo, that’s his nephew!" He literally almost killed his dad, the guy showed some restraint and grace after he saw that fucker’s future. The thing is Rey saw a different one. So who is right? We will find out!
@pdr3055 жыл бұрын
King of Carrotflowers We are also sick and tired with the reasoning ppl like you use to defend the pos TLJ.... “Luke wouldn’t try and kill Kylo, that’s his nephew! He literally almost killed his dad” How the $@&! do you compare him having a relationship with his nephew which he help raise, train, and guide to his father he never knew, who’s a mass murderer? This is why we’re so divided...some point out the incomprehensible inconsistencies in TLJ while casuals just disregard them

Has anyone else noticed how Roxy does the same thing every show: she sits quietly and listens to the guys points and then always goes the other way. I feel like she’s not savvy enough to form her own opinion and she simply chooses the opposite of whatever they’re saying just so she can add to the conversation. Kristian wasn’t even saying he preferred 7 over 8 at the start of this conversation. He was simply pointing out that the directors didn’t have a shared vision. Which they didn’t. That was it. That was his point. And then she speaks up and says “I prefer Rian Johnson’s vision”. Like huh? If I was in that room I would call her out on that shit and be like “where did that even come from? The first and most obvious clue that there wasn't a plan was the lightsaber over the shoulder toss. That long ending shot of Rey handing the lightsaber to Luke clearly meant JJ planned for it to mean something. I disagree that the last Jedi was split in terms of people who liked it. Critically it was well received but if you look at the audience reviews its abundantly not favorable. My wife is not a huge Star Wars fan, and she didn't like it. A lot of things happened that were redundant. I get it, the director wanted to subvert expectations. George RR Martin does it all the time, and it works, because he knows where and when to flip the narrative. It didn't work for Ep8.

Rey's parentage and the waste of the Snoke character are honestly the least of my concerns with The Last Jedi. I do however think that their biggest mistake was giving Luke an anticlimactic death. They shot themselves in the foot with that decision. Some fans will never forgive or forget that. Gotta play screenwriter right quick sorry... They should've ended the film with Luke lifting his X-Wing out of the water as he couldn't in The Empire Strikes Back.

Also, didn't Disney get George Lucas's outlines for 7-9 as part of the deal? I'm not a fan of the prequels, but in terms of a broad outline, the idea that one guy can manipulate both sides of a war into unwittingly creating a galactic empire is kind of cool. The execution fell flat, but the arc idea itself was interesting on paper. Disney could've taken the 7-9 arc and had each director/writer write their own piece, add their own flavor, etc. as long as it followed the larger arc I just find it hard to believe that Lucas's plan was SO bad that they opted to go with no plan instead
