You’re close! Initially when they were younger, she was running late for their meeting, so she left the note saying I’ll be there, don’t give up on me, wait for me. So then years later, when she dies, he’s not rereading the letter, he’s telling her to wait for him, as she said to him years ago. I’ve still got a few more things to do here on earth, but don’t give up on me, I’ll be there soon enough. This song has always made me cry, I love love, and the pure true love across many years is so very endearing and something we all wish we could have.

First Collin Raye reaction I've ever heard. Glad you did this. The songs a real tearjerker, but it was always one of my favorites ever since it came out in 1991.

Collin Raye is in my top 5 and I’ve seen him in concert twice. Once in Anchorage, Alaska in 1994 just as I was really getting into Country and again in 2019 in Arlington, Texas. I loved both concerts and what sucks is that we don’t have concert ticket stubs anymore as momentos. I still have my one from 1994 in my collection. I wish we still had those. Collin Raye’s music was the soundtrack of my 20s and his music is timeless. My favorites from this 90s Country crooner are Little Rock; That Was a River; If I Were You; Not That Different; Love Remains; In This Life; Man of My Word; Love, Me; Somebody Else’s Moon; Every Second; What the Heart Wants; I Volunteer; Heart Full of Rain; One Boy, One Girl; Angel of No Mercy; I Think About You; I Love Being Wrong; On the Verge; The Gift; Little Red Rodeo; That’s My Story; Someone You Used To Know; and She's With Me.

Haven’t hear this song for awhile. Thanks for sharing! I always took it that after Grandma passed, Grandpa was re-reading her note and at the same time telling her to wait for him in heaven. And that his time wasn’t up yet but he will see her again eventually. Sad in the here and now but beautiful and uplifting for the future…still definitely a tear jerker.

You got it right, 100%. Grandpa was so moved by that sweet letter, he kept it his whole life, and read it back to her when she passed.

He used to close every concert with this song. He has another song now called She's With Me about his granddaughter. I had not heard She's With Me before and so it's possible he now closes concerts with that one.

Your initial read is correct. The first few lines are "I read a note my Grandma wrote / Back in 1923 / My Grandpa kept it in his coat / And he showed it once to me". He goes on to tell the story of how the note was written - in 1923. Then we jump ahead to when Grandpa showed it to the boy, "I read the note just hours before / My Grandma passed away / In the doorway of a church / Where me and Grandpa stopped to pray". The words were the same, but now where Grandma had said "if you get there [to the tree] before I do, be patient, I'll be there soon", now it's Grandpa saying "if you get there [to Heaven] before I do...".

The initial reading was self explanatory. The 2nd reading was him telling his wife, who was entering the Kingdom of Heaven, not to give up on him. He's meet her there when his chores on Earth were completed.

This song makes me cry every time I hear it. It reminds me of my mom and dad. They were married 57 years and mom passed away. My dad keeps telling her. "Just be a little patient ma, when I have everything done here I'm coming to be with u" It tears me up to hear him say things like that. But he says she's was his soul mate. He says after 57 years it's like a part of his soul is gone. Rip mom thanks for reacting to this song

You’re exactly right. However, man I call this a happy sad song. A life lived in love with your one and to see it to fruition & the keeping of your vows. That’s awesome. It’s sad when our loved ones dies and spouses in particular. However, it’s a big sad listening to it in context of today’s dating/relationship culture in the western world.

The story starts with Collin as a boy, reading his Grandma's letter to Grandpa, when they were young and in love. So right away you know they got married, had Collin's mom or dad, then Collin was born, and now he's with his Grandpa. Then Grandpa tells the story of when the note was written, and why. Their plan to run away and get married, and she had nailed the letter to the tree where they were supposed to meet, telling him if she's late, she's still going through with it, she just has to finish her chores. Now, some 35 or 40 years later, Grandpa's with 15-year-old Collin, who's reading the letter in the doorway of the church, while his Grandpa's in there praying, Grandma about to pass away. Collin can hear his Grandpa saying the same words as in the letter, only now with a new meaning, applying not to Grandma as a young lady finishing her chores before she elopes, but as himself now as an old man, speaking them to her about how she'll soon be in Heaven where they'll meet again, telling her with tears in his eyes and in the words from her letter so long ago, that he'll be with her soon.

Yes, you interpreted it correctly. Maybe just listen to a song fully though before trying to guess. You kept pausing it at the most emotional impactful parts of the song. Love your reactions, though. Collin Raye has lots of good songs. Little Red Rodeo; Somebody Else’s Moon; That’s My Story.
