One of the best videos I ever watched, explains details, like 2 person job and how heat has to be use at all times. Thanks a lot.

You can use Tempil Sticks to indicate virtually any temperature. Welders and heat treaters have used these for years. There is some very good info using Oxy-Acetylene out there too. Not today's technology but it works with skill. Thanks.

Excellent guidance. I personally felt I have started the lesson on how/what to do. Very good guidance at a level beginners can understand.

This guy is very knowledgeable on paper. However, I see his crafty side with working hands on skill is questionable. 😁 Just saying Larry... Don't get mad, I've learned much from hearing you speak on all your guys videos. So thank you for that.

We had damage to the nose of the hood on our new Lincoln Corsair and the insurance company says bondo will do. The dents are right at the crease where when you lift the hood it has impacted the seam where the two or three pieces of aluminum are bonded together. Is this an adequate means of repair ? very concerned about aluminum corrosion and that seam opening up over time.

I took an aluminum class and they said ford uses 2 types of aluminum, and one type of stud works on one type and one sticks to the other, I think silica and magnesium?

@collision hubLarry talked about the use of the dye on damage analysis but then mentioned using it on bare aluminum. Can you use the dye without bringing the panel to bare aluminum? If I have a heave hit to an upper rail and want to see if the strut dome has any cracking can I do that without having to prep the area (minus the steps for the dye itself)?

Benjamin Bowman no I'm an aircraft mechanic it is of little use on a painted surface for detection of stress cracks . Major STRUCTURAL parts are inspect with the same dye Penatrant and an NDI process and always the paint is removed with a paint stripper. I got to be honest bondo will stick to aluminum I really can't imagine why all the fuss on a hood or door panel of a car when it has little chance of falling out of the sky. I'd repair the same way I would repair a steel flat panel Bondo it and move on. I did body work 4 years before I got in the aircraft field when we were using lead filler. This process is a total waste of time.

Thanks for showing us this information. I just wish cars didn't have to go to aluminum. I just don't trust it yet. I hope nobody has to get hurt just so automakers can over complicate things yet again by trying to save money. I just don't get it though what is the point of going to all aluminum on a new car? Its going to raise car prices and if it's not thin how can it be about saving weight?
@Collisionhub
@Collisionhub 8 жыл бұрын
All car manufacturers are having to save weight due to the CAFE standards on gas mileage. For example the Aluminum on the F150 saved about 650lbs over the previous production year. In crash testing it has the same safety performance of the high strength steels. Also important to remember we've had Aluminum body cars in production going back to the 1920's. It's just going to become more common.

Also keep in mind, besides appearance and wind drag, the outer panel is like a veneer for looks etc. The effect would be minimal during a crash as the energy is absorbed by the frame etc.

Aluminum panels should be repaired in clean rooms on big repairs .When working with files they can never have been used on steel.If just a little piece of steel get impregnated into the aluminum you will have a problem.Always keeps steel files and aluminum files separated and marked them .Make sure your grounds are clean and free of any iron..Make sure you charge for additional material and labor on all aluminum repair work.

Can you apply body filler direct to aluminum panels?
@Collisionhub
@Collisionhub 8 жыл бұрын
bossmike24 yes, as with steel you want to make sure you get a tight skim coat for your first coat. Also, review the OEM procedures for the vehicle your working on, some OEMs require a 2K primer prior to filler on both Alum and steel panels
@jonathanolsson7347
@jonathanolsson7347 5 жыл бұрын
Body filler has to be able to use on aluminum, usually it will say on can or bottle, but for aluminum I like use ever coat glaze putty you can use right over bare aluminum, but clean with rubbing alcohol first

pinoydad0811 Did you clean/brush the area immediately before applying the pins?
@JD_Mortal
@JD_Mortal 6 жыл бұрын
You need to match the OEM "Alloy". Aluminum is not normally "Pure aluminum", It is an alloy of various metals. There are many alloy types. You are obviously using the wrong alloy for the pins. Here is a quick tip... Go to a junk-yard, find a similar vehicle, cut-out a chunk of the same metal, with a nibbler. Use that chunk of metal to make "tabs" for pulling. It should be 100% the same exact alloy.

you don't need heat for a tiny ding like that. I metal shape aluminum all the time and I rarely use heat. Heat is so it won't tear but it's not going to tear for that. Silly.
@123suzukisamurai
@123suzukisamurai 5 жыл бұрын
sanchtech the heat is to soften the metal making it more pliable and less prone to cracking. Makes the operation way easier. The aluminum u r using is softened already

Define “collision repair”. Correct me if I’m wrong but collision repair involves another vehicle and/or structural that causes very noticeable damages. I don’t believe this classifies as “collision damage.”

This is bullshlt bin in auto body for 30years that aluminum must be very thin. I'll give you a stretched panel dent to bring out like most damages. Theirs no way that little flame can fix anything in an accident.

Aluminum exterior panels are not that then. This repair technique is standard as part of the various OEM Aluminum repair classes.
@123suzukisamurai
@123suzukisamurai 5 жыл бұрын
S Q yes the aluminum is thin but 2 to 3 times thicker than steel panels. It’s very stiff and when dented it work hardens more in the damaged area making it difficult to put it back to where it was the heat just lower than melting softens it making it easy to manipulate back to where it was meant to b Also by softening it previous to reshaping the metal is pliable thus much less prone to cracking. Believe me it’s not like the steel panels we are used to. Need to approach it differently than steel. Sad but true nontheless
