Colonel, the reason recruitment quotas are not being met nowadays is that there is simply no real leadership with Obiden at the helm. One of the biggest mistakes from the Vietnam period was ending the draft call-up for purely political reasons. Opposition to the draft was a reflection of public opposition to the war itself. Rather than use the trained resources in the Reserves and the National Guard - again, for purely political reasons - the geniuses decided to go with lowering the requirements for Basic Training. This allowed for 100,000 people who could not achieve the minimum qualifications to enter the military, with the promise of assistance from the VA if needed. What was not said was that the VA only will assist those who have and Honorable - or General under Honorable Conditions - discharge. Two other categories of discharge were also given Administratively: Undesirable and Bad Conduct Discharge (also called Big Chicken Dinner). It stands to reason that the less than minimum people would be most likely to receive the less-than-honorable discharges. I am a Vietnam veteran and I earned an Honorable discharge from three branches: Air Force, Marine Corps and Army. My actual service was just under four years in the Air Force and five years in the Army National Guard - the Guard was twenty years after I returned from the Nam. I hope the above helps to explain the situation today - particularly about the difficulty in recruiting today. The kids today are taught virtually nothing about their heritage and history, which does not help either.
