I've been a movie fan since childhood. i watched this movie because I like Charles Coburn. I'm also a fan of Joan Bennet. Coming into my adolescence, I first noticed Joan Bennett as an attractive, human woman, instead of a flickering, screen presence. So, she effected a change in me to make me view screen actresses as women instead of phantoms. I troll KZbin for "old" movies of the 1930s thru the 1950s. I'm nearly 80 years old, so "old" movies are really not "old" to me. I appreciate these movies as not throwing curses around instead of plots and pertinent dialogue. Glad to see intelligent comments here.

This was a great movie!!! It brought tears to my eyes. So many of us forget about where we came from and who fought for us in the past. North and South gave their blood for what they believed in but in their hearts they were always Americans. I've had uncles cousins my brother my father all who served in the military. They sacrificed in many ways most of my family came back some didn't but they sacrificed in other ways. Their sacrifices came by being away from their families for years at a time and doing their duty to their country to all veterans thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for your service!! I was unable to serve in the military because of a blindness in my left eye. I volunteered three different branches of the military during the Vietnam war. My country means a lot to me and it breaks my heart to see the divisiveness of this country now. This movie sparked an emotion in my heart and re-energized my love for this country. She has been like a mother to me and to all of us should be. It was built on the blood and the sacrifice of many. And she'll go on as long as we stay United. Thanks for the movie thanks for the memory this is a good one.

What a surprising film. In 1946 a community learns of the importance of it's heritage. And how we are still thinking about our heritage. Apparently we always will thru the ages. Sometimes with pride and love and at at other times without. We are not perfect, but we do revere, and remember those who have served in peace and in war. A good film.

@AMT What´s a little kid walking by those statues of all those Confederate ´heroes´ supposed to think? Black, white, it doesn´t make any difference. It´s a bad, bad message. And I know, after Lincoln´s Vice President became President, he gave amnesty to all of them, and they embraced. Black people who had been working like dogs to end slavery for decades watched in dismay as both sides in the war turned on them. I really think John Wilkes Booth didn´t just murder Lincoln. He murdered the whole country. We´re still stuck up to our necks in Treason.

@@nedludd7622 so my little brother wouldn't have to. I had friends going over there and dying and I felt like then being forced to make a sacrifice was important. But I just knew I did not want my little brother to have to go into that s***. If I'd have gone over there and lost my life they wouldn't have forced my little brother to go and that was the only reason. Call it stupid but that was my reasoning. And no I did not agree with the Vietnam War we shouldn't have been there and we never should have but that was a political Thing by the idiots that we had running our country at that time

D B I almost put a like without thinking, but thought about it then thought you're almost right, almost. So I have to make it clear. I making a guess you are American. I'm British hear me out before you stop reading. The film doesn't quite go far enough back. Most Americans it seems think only of their History since the revolution. Bear with me read on. Before America became "America" it was British. The 13 states anyway. The pre revolutionary country was British. So the majority of those founders of the Colony of America were British Jamestown, Roanoke, Boston, Salem witch trials were all British first. My Own Regiment fought at Lexington and Concord. There is much more than Just as you put it "Our History." History has to be protected not just in America but in the whole world. We British have thousands of years of history and so developers think they can demolish this flatten that. It's All wrong we lost far too much History in WW2. Like this film points out in an endearing post ww2 way, loose the bricks and mortar you loose a tangible touch with history. I have a friend in America who renacts my regiments historic roots, the 10th of Foot later to become the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment. One day I intend to go over dress and fire a musket. And get a feel for it. I'm absolutely amazed that Americans take the time to remember the regiment when most Brits, even in Lincolnshire the regiments county haven't a clue. Of its many, varied parts of the world it served. But America has chosen to remember them because it's your history also. Sorry went off track a touch but anyway suffice to say, I agree Our History is important.

You have a rich history worthy of your pride. I know we are very young but I hope we are not watching the beginning of our end. I have seen things happen in the last few weeks I would never have thought I would see in the last 62 years I have been alive. Tonight I saw in the news a statement of one of these activists that next they need to destroy all the stained glassed windows depicting Jesus and his parents as white. Truly delightful film. Even as the strains of patriotism to the stated ideals of the American Mythos warms the Heart, the reality that two black men were relegated to the sidelines as servants and comic relief was impossible to ignore. We as a nation are divided by looking back with blinders. We will be destroyed if we see the future through myopic self-interest. Democracy is a full time responsibility for all who demand its rights!

To bad we destroy so much history. Everyone thinks something new is cool, and forget that history is earned. Something with a lot more value than something that's new. We need to stop neglecting or buildings, repair, maintain, and put them to new uses. Not only is there history, but a savings of resources.

You are so right, you are young, with an old mind. Which is a very high compliment. Not many young people, think that way. You absolutely can't imagine, that where I live, they have demolished alot of very beautiful historic buildings. For new ones, or parking lots,. Its so sad. The beautiful architecture, and history they have removed is heartbreaking. And the new buildings are so cold and ugly. No beauty at all. I can't even stand to go about town , for this isn't, my home town, anymore, not the hometown, that I once knew, and loved. Its enough to make a person sick.

How relevant is to our region right now in New South Wales Australia. Our state government has been neglecting the rural regions, and using the taxpayer's money to destroy public transport infrastructure. There are always vested interests in these dealings. The largest city outside of Sydney, Newcastle, has had its direct rail line to Australia's largest city ripped up. For $1billion, about 3.2 kilometres [about 2 miles] of the line with three stations were removed, and a 'light rail' placed alongside it on the road! This is a huge waste of our money. It prohibits direct access to Sydney from Newcastle's CBD. Now, in the northern part of the state, in popular tourist visited Northern Rivers, the state government offers $100million and more to rip up the railway tracks for an elitist cycling track. The central local government area of Lismore City has its councillors thinking this would be a good thing! There is no proper consultation with the community, who since daytime railway services were closed in 1990, have no real transport to the coast [Byron bay], towns and villages in the seven LGA, or into our close large city of Brisbane. The roads are dangerous, and many cannot use them or the sparse bus services to traverse our regional distances. The reasoning is that mostly poor with discounted fares were using the last rail service. There's nothing for our huge numbers of visitors to the region. They're not going to ride bikes through our hot droughts, fires and floods. This stops the poorest, those with disabilities and many others without proper access to their needs. We are supposed to be in a wealthy country without a class system, but 52% in NSW call themselves 'middle class' and have no regard or empathy for others. In Zurich, Switzerland, the wealthiest to the poorest share their public transport system. Rail is the only socially inclusive mobile venue there is. Why, is it so difficult to get humanitarian and democratically minded people into our councils and governments?

Thanks, for another great movie. Love Charles Coburn. He was quite the funny gentleman , great actor. Its sad to see, that's nothing has changed in the comment section. Still mudslinging hate. People just can't stop, to watch a simple good old movie. I'm sure in the year this was made, the actors had no idea, that it would cause, such division or the big ruckus that the movie causes in 2018 ! Or most of the actors probably wouldn't, have made it. They made it for, fun entertainment, not to start a political or racial war! It's always one ,or the other. If they could only see us Now? They would probably find it quite disturbing. It's sad, The Hate is that bad.And some can't distinguish between fiction and reality! There was alot of the same things going on back then, but this is a movie, and nothing more. Period, they didn't even mean it to be more than that.

Folks! This belongs to you! Possibilities..! [Note: Semper Fidelis!]! Our "We" system? In a 21st century context... This needs you; and, word of mouth. (Please consider, carefully?)? "A well regulated [ neighborhood incident management / comprehensive contingencies management system ] being necessary to the [ national security democratic posture ] of a free state, the right of the people to [ employ a Swiss version of active and passive civil defense, within a republic, will not likely be ] infringed." The first part of that "sentence", before the comma, boils down to the "musterings"! That's where they gathered, and talked... (... before a "Formation", as they gathered and waited; during a "Formation"... being informed, organized, consolidated, coordinated, trained, nominated leadership, exercised, educated, assigned, deployed...; and, they communicated, as they parted... traded, bartered, planned, informed, organized, reported for "night-watch" duty, deployed... for neighborhood incident management... Functioning within a comprehensive contingencies management system! Gatherings of: knowledge, education, experience, training, abilities, talents, wisdom...! Considering: food, water, shelter, shielding, commerce, waste, logistics, liaison, medical, health, warning, correspondence... But, as the security apparatus faded from use, so went the treasures of the "demos-kratos" "musterings"! Note this, as easy to fix...!...? Note: FEMA recommends that "We" "maintain secondary EOCs (Emergency Operations Centers)! However, such was written, in the context of maintaining "secondary [Primary] EOCs", in case the Primary has problems! (The Primary controls that "Police Line"... Dispatch, "Enforcement", Medical, Fire, HazHats, Health, Public Works, Waste Disposal, Water, "Professional 'First' Responders" ...)! Tell me, aren't you, normally, "the first responder?". And then, a second person may help, and then more folks, maybe, before the EMS, or the "Enforcers", get to us, to help? This matters, in "civil defense!". In basic "Old School" neighborhood incident management, and comprehensive contingencies management! Basics "We" are born into, as "members"! Humans! Note: "civil defense" can not, only, be, another government agency (Note: "The Civil Defense Act of 1950, as amended.); while, "We" needs, "professional" "First Responders"! Thusly; DES ("Disaster and Emergency Services / "Civil Defense", etc.)!... Humph! Folks, nobody says "We" can't use, and be, that "secondary" system! And, "We" can do so, "Separate but Equal", within a republic! ..."For, Of, By...We"! "The Fourth Branch"!..?? (Note: Swiss example!). "We" can use this, to actually build "secondary [Comprehensive Contingencies Operations Centers]!" Anchored in a neutral / objective, logistics / liaison, "Matrix" NGO. With the necessary technical back-up systems! (Note: Internet possibilities!)! [I want an Desktop Icon, that takes me to my very own NASA type CCMC (comprehensive contingencies management center! Where i can track and map all of my utilities, and all the taxable matters and issues about them... From my sink, to the Primary Intakes, and beyond... Upstream!! Or, waste output systems... Downstream..., ages, conditions, contracts,.. Thusly, an Internet site, where "We" can do our own "official" polling, and surveys, with capabilities, for full contribution, and participation, on any issue!....). Such an NGO gives us "Project", and "Mission s" capabilities! (Like the Red Cross; but, ARC can not be "armed!"??? ... Thusly; "active and passive" "civil defense"! [OCD, 1964])! The "Project - Missions"... (Who, What, When, Where, Which, Why, How...)! And; if "We" lock it into all levels of education / academics, for a 24/7 operational platform, (for mixing Internships, In-Service Learning, Instructors, Volunteers...). So, your younger folks, and even your little ones, can participate, directly, in "democracy", too! (Note: "Minute"...men, women, kids, elders...)! (...toddlers, pre-teens, teens, young adults, adults, elders... "civil"... "civil defense", with "Civil Defense"!). [Note, for instance: some of us old Vets ( "we" "nocturnal s" ), are "standing by" for "night watch" "duty"!... So, to restore "Minute" capabilities???]. Ask we millions of Vets, to give it an instant backbone, for some basic SOPs (Standard Operations Procedures). While always selecting our best leadership, as we go...? FEMA recommends "We" apply CEM. (Comprehensive [Contingencies] Management)! Thusly; a "four phased cycle: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery." "Through an IEMS (Integrated [Contingencies] Management System)!" Which "includes all sectors: Public, Private, and Governments!" Such will provide ability for restoring "mustering", from home, for managing any issues! Such can provide "active and passive civil defense", within "national security democratic posture!" (Considering the Swiss example, for resolving the "firearms" issues, as it must be, as "active [armed] and passive civil defense are integral to national security posture! [OCD 1964].). Such will provide an ability to efficiently consolidate and coordinate resources: human, material, information, agricultural...! Folks, FEMA pleads for citizen involvement in "civil defense", anyway! I recommend, "We" call it, what it does, so to avoid confusion, down the road. Such always centers the concept, for employment in any republic. ..."DES" - "Support, Systems, and Services"! That way, "We" can plug directly into the sources (on the other side of any "police line")! [So, to "unionize", and to "protest", from "home"!]! Such could mechanize and empower demos-kratos, within a republic! Folk, this is the system "we" can use, to be "We", within a republic! ... [ Just for starters! ]... I hope!... [Folks, this comes from 40+ yrs of research into finding ways to make "civil defense" what it must be, for us to survive the future. For all us "Boomers", we knew the truth behind songs like CCRs "Bad Moon Rising"; and, "In The Year 2525!"... Thusly; I know you want to preserve a twinkle, in the eyes of your little ones, and not tears! Help?]!

Let’s defend Vichy French monuments, and monuments to Norwegian SS units. Otherwise we can’t know about history, right? It’s not like we can just look things up and read about them, we can’t know about history unless we have a monument celebrating those who did every evil act ever committed.

The dude in the Mayor's office painting was named Ivanka. The Mayor is having a new FBI building erected and his brother-in-law is getting the contract. This movie isn't set in 1940, this is 2020 under Hier Mayor Trump. Guess which cousin got the border fence contract?

@@pawel5280 Grandpa Trump fled to the US to avoid military duty in WWI, In America, Donald Trump avoided the draft to stay away from Vietnam. The name Trump will go down like the name of Al Capone, Adolf Hitler, Ted Bundy, and Joseph Stalin... Barron will change his last name the minute he turns 18, and he has cashed in his inheritance check. Trump = massive corruption.
