I never heard of it either, 'til today June 24th '23. But aside from him killing the barmaid, the Cagney character was totally right. That was no peace treaty, it was a slavery pact, which is why the IRA regrouped.

I saw this at the time,1959, when I was 12 years old. I thought it was boring. Of course I was too young to understand what it was about. Even so, I remembered that and avoided watching this when it occasionally was shown on TV. How wrong I was to do that. It’s a fabulous movie.

Love anything with Cagney in it. Don't know too much about Irish history, but I love St Patricks Day. I am "black" Irish on that day!
@jamesbradshaw33893 жыл бұрын
Hello Moriah You many not know but for many years the Irish were called and classed as the blacks of Europe because of the cruel and brutal behavior of the British government, its army and their police, During the 50s,60s and 70s in the UK it was common to see signs outside lodging houses No Irish, Blacks Or Dogs allowed, when looking for employment the signs were No Irish & Blacks need apply, that also happened in the good old USA and that is a recorded fact. The Irish and Blacks were welcomed when people were needed to fight their wars and carry out works that other people did not want to do. The Black and Irish people are all proud people, they will not stand aside and let anyone abuse or talk down to them, they are a fighting people, fighting for the good of all mankind and fighting for own their rights.and just for started Muhammad Ali forefathers/mother came for Co Clare west of Ireland, President Barack Obama's Irish links to the Kearney family from Moneygall Co. Offaly Ireland .Jimi Hendrix had a mixed genealogy, which included African American, Irish, and Cherokee ancestors. This is not uncommon. His paternal great-great-grandmother Zenora was a full-blooded Cherokee from Georgia who married an Irishman named Moore, You see that we are all connected somewhere back along the line, the more people understand this the better for us all. You are more than welcome to feel IRISH on the 17th March or any other day of the year

Fascinating film,thanks for posting it,I can't understand why it's so little known,especially given its quality and it's fairly frank and balanced approach to such complex and grim events.it is sad to recall how much hope for peace and an end to violence there was,only to be followed by the Civil War and another 70 years of struggle and loss.I hope that Ireland can finally find the peace and prosperity such a noble land and fine people deserve in the 21st. century!

Thanks for uploading this superb and historic film, which has superb acting by the incomparable Cagney and a slew of other first rate actors. Just a brief history for those who are not familiar with it. This film depicts the battles in the first half of 1921, when Northern Ireland was under British martial law and roughly a thousand men were killed on both sides. The film ends on the eve of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, agreed to in mid 1921 and signed in December, wen the IRA was suffering tremendous casualties, while the British Govt. concluded it could not end the battle by military force, which led both sides to agree to a truce. It was followed by a civil war between the "Cagney" supporters who wanted to fight to the end, and the opponents. Those supporting the peace won, and things settled down pretty much until the 1960's when the internecine religious battle was re-ignited, until the Irish-British Catholic-Protestant war was finally brought to an end with the Good Friday Accord in 1998, which was negotiated by US President Bill Clinton and his Secretary of State George Mitchell, and which has thankfully stood the test of time ever since.
