Qaz! I was thinking you should try doing a color processing breakdown from a well known movie from before computers were an option. Something like Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, the original Star Wars Trilogy, Terminator, Alien... That would be interesting not just for people wanting to get the look but also, if you could find out how they worked to achieve those colors it would be a really good lesson for all of us to learn.

lots of the past color grading were done on the film choice and the chemical used to develop them. I'm not sure what's to be taught about it. Color grading is also a thing that happen in front of the lenses such as lighting, colors of the set props etc. It not only a thing that happen during post production.

How is this process different with compressed footage as opposed to what you'd do with raw or a better codec? I don't see the compressed clip playing a roll except with the extra grain... Last year at least 80% of my coloring gigs were agencies handing me a pile of stock video clips to match. They are all compressed and shot inconsistently so what are those watchout where does compressed footage fall apart or what tools within davinci are gentle enough for compression but still useful...

When playing the log footage directly in VLC : no color streaks... How can I recover the footage and correct/grade in resolve please? Thank you

After bringing some of the saturation down on the sweater, you could've added color density to the red, so that it is more colorful without actually being "high saturation". Darren Mostyn has a video on that with DCTL nodes.

Loved this very simple tutorial. We see so many tutorials for grading RAW or 10-Bit etc these days, but not everyone wants or needs higher bit depth video and certainly not RAW. I don't want to be a colorist. I just want to be able to correct my skin tones and make the image a little bit nicer if I didn't for whatever reason nail it in camera. Waqazi you are a very talented guy. Can we have some more 'color-correcting for 8-bit' tutorials please? Just what the doctor ordered.

Awesome tips! How would recommend removing yellow (say on a wall that's in the BG) in an image without affecting skin tones too much?
@earthpond8043
@earthpond8043 2 жыл бұрын
Well depending on the luminance you could isolate, but that method is a little dirty. Rather go to your hue vs hue and select the color there and drop up or down depending where you wanna take it. That or add a little bit of blue to negate the yellow as they are opposites. Obviously you can’t do too much otherwise everything turns bluer but a smidge should help. One last thing would be to desaturate the yellow by going to the hue vs sat and selecting it there.

@kenkondo8663
@kenkondo8663 2 жыл бұрын
i think because the red was obviously the most saturated part in the image and sat vs sat helped to balance the overall saturation of the image if that makes sense. plus if he used sat vs hue in this case, her skin would also lose saturation.
@earthpond8043
@earthpond8043 2 жыл бұрын
You should use it! It’s a great tool! Sometimes I’ll use it to merely balance out saturation as you can bring the overly saturated down and the under saturated up. Hue vs sat in this instance would desaturate all red including her face, since there is such a difference in the level of saturation with the sweater using sat vs sat tool was the correct choice.

The end result of this shot is too far fried in my opinion, the grade also changes the time of day. The original does not look like an incorrect white balance. It was shot during the blue hour after sunset and the sky blue is reflected from the snow bathing everything in blue light. Ambient blue light is everywhere, this is how it looks in the North. A key to making snow look more natural is to have blue tones on it. Colorists and artists usually make snow black and white and it makes it look dirty and unnatural. Try to paint beautiful looking snow, blue in the shadows makes it really pop. I’m an artist that grew up in Northern Finland, been surrounded by snow all my life.
