It's just a few days before Christmas, 1950 as the USS Leyte, CV-32, steams in Korean waters, launching and recovering F4U Corsairs, AD Skyraiders, and F9F Panthers in this vintage color film.
The Korean War is in full swing. Earlier this month, USS Leyte lost Ensign Jesse Brown, the first black naval aviator to complete the navy's basic flight training program. Brown and his flight of Corsairs were defending Marines embroiled in the fight at the Chosin reservoir.
In these films, specialized ladders are used to reach the tip tanks of F9F Panthers for fueling.
USS Leyte served until 1959. The ship was scrapped in 1970.
