It's just a few days before Christmas, 1950 as the USS Leyte, CV-32, steams in Korean waters, launching and recovering F4U Corsairs, AD Skyraiders, and F9F Panthers in this vintage color film.
The Korean War is in full swing. Earlier this month, USS Leyte lost Ensign Jesse Brown, the first black naval aviator to complete the navy's basic flight training program. Brown and his flight of Corsairs were defending Marines embroiled in the fight at the Chosin reservoir.
In these films, specialized ladders are used to reach the tip tanks of F9F Panthers for fueling.
USS Leyte served until 1959. The ship was scrapped in 1970.

My dad was at the Chosin reservoir battle....7th Infantry, Task Force Faith...he didn't talk much about what happened there, other than the courage of the Corsair pilots that bombed and strafed the advancing Chinese troop waves.

Thanks again Mr. Johnsen for the Korean War era post. So many of our brave service men and women who were involved during this time have been forgotten. I see them from time to time when at the VA doctor. As always, God bless you and yours and thanks again for all you do! Have a Happy and Safe New Year! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

That's one of the good possibilities with KZbin -- now there's a chance more and more people will find these old films and catch a glimpse into the lives of the Korean War veterans. Thanks, and Happy New Year.

Those Navy photographers did a bang up job filming this video and others from that time period and before. It always amazes me how they move and position the aircraft on carriers. Thanks for this and all the films that you bring us.

The Panther was an all weather aircraft. Using that ladder in bad weather must have been a nightmare. The team work on aircraft carriers is amazing.

I just can't imagine how they landed those F4U Corsair planes on aircraft carriers with the pilot seated so far back - poor visibility of the deck had to be an issue.

Thanks for another great posting. I like the specialized ladders to fill fuel tanks, what are the remove before flight pins for I wonder. Do they just indicate that the tanks are full or empty? The Panther at the three minute mark seems to have a kill marking. Thanks again!

Full-or-empty sounds logical. Hey, thanks, as always, for watching and commenting.

Appreciate you bringing these videos to YT. Thank you. But who chose the music? I just muted the entire video. It's a trivial matter to find something time-appropriate.

Well, appreciate your commenting. We learned years ago it is impossible to please everybody no matter what we do for audio, but our channel growth suggests we must be doing something right for the majority of viewers. So I guess this time, you are the one who won't be happy with what we've done. Thanks for watching.
