PO48 is definitely on Kremer pigment as a pigment, they call it Cinquasia® Gold, red-gold

No problem, it must be a trade name or something - I stumbled across it quite by accident when trying to identify pigments in their watercolours.

Quin Burnt Orange was also one of my two first Daniel Smith paints, along with Green Apatite Genuine (which I utterly adore and looove using for my landscape painting). Glad to see that this beautiful color gets some love, it's such a great orange tone and I like using it to mix skintones. Thanks for the wonderful video :)

Great Spotlight as usual Denise! Such a useful color for me in M. Graham. Its so similar (in hue) to my favorite brown mixer, trans. red iron oxide. Isn't the texture just granulation? Texture does seem to change for me depending on paper. I get similar texture patterns with some other colors. Not great, I realize, if you're expecting clean, non-granulating color. I think your first fox was better than you give it credit, but I know that in our minds eye we can see things turning out differently sometimes. Recognizing and admitting fails to ourself, is so important to pushing ourselves forward. Kudos to making the decision to repaint and share that with us. Can you share your Foxicorn reference with us? I doubt any of us has actually gotten a glimpse of one! 😂
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! It is indeed very close to the red iron oxide, especially from MGraham, and I'd be curious to put them side by side in some mixing studies in the future! I suppose that the texture is a type of granulation, but MGraham doesn't list it as granulating. Interestingly enough, upon double checking DSs info, they do rate it as slightly granulating 😂 so there's that! Thanks for the kind words about the foxes. It was really just how badly I overworked the chest that I was so unhappy with, but definitely a learning experience so I can't be too bummed :) The reference was from pixabay, here's a link! pixabay.com/en/fox-animal-nature-forest-tatry-3053706/

Good on ya for showing a painting you didn't like! It's important to see that even the Pros struggle, and even more important to remember that the Pros only share the "good" pieces, that you don't see the piles of failures it took to get to the "good" one! Also, I love Quin Rust. I've only ever used MGraham's version and never noticed that it had that slight granulation to it.

I really like this color for mixing, especially for natural looking green colors. I missed out on stocking up on PO49, so I am stocking up on this because it is part of my main single pigment mixing palette.

I found Transparent Red Oxide (PR101) worked a lot better for properly neutralising ultramarine blue. But the mixes you created with PO48 is so pretty too :D Both foxes are so cute. well done for getting back up and giving it another go, that's not easy to do. Congrats

Thanks Oto! Indeed, I don't look to QBO for neutralizing. I look to it for the gorgeous, vibrant mixes! I just also keep a burnt sienna on my palette for those greys :D

I love Quin burnt orange! Accidentally sort of found out about it because of that Daniel smith secondaries set and Quin burnt orange and the undersea green ESPECIALLY ended up surprising and delighting me. I know I also liked the carbazole violet they came with as well, but I’d already tried it before so it wasn’t a super big surprise. This color, for me, is the nearly perfect shade of deep and warm orange that mimics my hunky’s hair color, so it’s certainly gotten use in my household. =^.^= (as we’ve aged his hair has gotten just a little bit darker though so it’s mostly just the base for a mix and the highlights.)

I don't know about the other versions of PB60 since I haven't mixed them with PO48 before, and I know it's your least favorite version, but DS Indanthrone Blue does neutralize very well with Quin Burnt Orange. I use the combo for warm blacks, and I used it in a few art projects to get a wide range of grays and browns. These two pigments are some of my most used colors for their incredible versatility in a variety of subjects.

Thank you for this video, I love your demonstrations. I've been trying to decide whether or not to get this colour and which one to buy. I've been trying not to buy new paints until Jackson's gets M. Graham in stock which I know is coming at some point but as I'm not a huge fan of granulation I'll get the Daniel Smith. So thank you, this is one of the paints I was going to try from M. Graham and I think I would have been a little disappointed. I was wondering if you have videos for the sea turtle and red panda? Thanks again. ❤️

I've been trying to find the neutralizer to my PO48 for three days now :D I wanted to put it in my palette instead of Transparent Pyrrol Orange, but nothing works... Thanks for mentioning it, thought it was my mixing skill that was the issue. Glad to know it's the color characteristic. I do plan on putting Perylene Violet on my palette and in neutralizes perfectly with Perylene Green so that will be the grey I'll use. Would you consider Daniel Smith's PO48 as a possible replacement for Burnt Sienna (not counting the neutralization issue)?
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
Glad I'm not alone either Ana! Haha. I was like "why don't you have a mixing compliment?!" PO48 is a replacement for the oranger burnt siennas like Winsor & Newtons, but definitely a different color from Daniel Smith's earthy one. I have both on my main palette.

Thank you for the suggestion. My DS PO48 and DS Cerulean Blue Chromium create a range of greenish browns and brownish greens unfortunately :( Perhaps M.Graham processes the pigment differently. Really want to try their Quinacridone set now ^_^

As Denise said its probably because MG leans more red brown. I love a challenge so I'm sitting here playing with the DS dot card and DS Cobalt Blue seems to produce an almost perfect neutral with their PO48. 😃

Yes! My graham has that texture to! Due to the fact that I only have one po48, I still use it, even a lot in skintones, and it doesn’t really bother me in light washes c: And yes! I adore your baby foxicorn, especially his tufty chest. Pups do have uncontrollably fluffy fur and I would expect nothing less than that from a kit. I would think that, secretly, the people asking for a rework just wanted to see more lovely unicorn creatures from you. So thank you for the bonus, but I thought the kit was top notch.

Hmm, I've never heard this and don't believe this is the case. Brighteners usually make a paint more chalky and opaque, not give them more texture (as far as I'm aware).

When you are brushing it out on this demo, it looks granulating. Daniel Smith lists this pigment as granulating. My cannot live without pigment is Winser & Newton, PR101, the one that is mistakenly called Burnt Sienna. It's not Burnt Sienna anymore than any PY42 is a Yellow Ochre. But I adore the W&N brand of this transparent, non granulating PR101 pigment no matter what they call it. My let peeve is that a true Yellow Ochre was always PY43 many years ago. I mean MANY years ago. I'm 65. Raw Sienna was always the sunnier p one being PY42. True yellow ochre was deeper Ochre with an almost a greenish cast to it, like a field new of freshly cut hay. At least Winser & Newton is correct about their Yellow Ochre being real PY43 Yellow Ochre and Raw sienna being PY42 Raw Sienna.
