Color theory + Harvesting & making bouquets… And... how much did I make at this week's market?

This week, I take you from harvest to bouquet making in preparation for my Sunday Market. I discuss color theory and how I'm trying to be more deliberate in my bouquet color palette. Watch to find out which color type sells first, how much I made, and profitability from this Sunday's Market!

One of the most important thing to know about colour theory is that there are no wrong colour combinations, only wrong percentages or locations of colours used. Also, aside from colour, texture is a most important ingredient of all design. The rules really only act as a guideline until people understand the math behind colour combinations. If you apply a weight to a colour it is easier to understand. For example, pale pink weighs far less than fuschia because fuschia demands far more attention. If you place one fuschia flower on one side of the bouquet, the bouquet will feel lopsided and heavy to that side. This imbalance can be rectified by a colour of equal weight placed on the other side, asymetrical design. Place the one fuschia flower dead centre and the bouquet is balanced - symetrical design. This is how the "weight" of colour affects design of any kind. The same applies to textures.

@@bareflowerfarm Unfortunately not off the top of my head. When I was going to college for my Associate of Interior Design, colour theory was a 6 month course and that was a very long time ago. Reference books have long been forgotten by me.

I've learned to never compare myself to anyone .. do the best you can and your never disappointed. At the end of the day we don't know exactly what the customer is thinking. I wouldn't want to carry around a bouquet if it is hot out. Have you ever thought of having some kind of application for CSA and making your farmers market a pick up point ?

Thanks for taking us along on your market prep. Your stall looked lovely. I wouldn't have lilies in my house because I have cats they are extremely toxic. Also, I find the smell overpowering. I am not sure if more of a choice of focal flowers would have made a difference. I am living vicariously through you since none of my flowers are blooming yet.😁🌻

That is a very valid point about having a variety of focals! The ones grown here were actually unscented or very mild scent but obviously still toxic for cats. Hope your flowers start blooming soon!!

I waffled between setting those bouquets at $20 and $25. I think I could have sold at few at $25 but you can definitely see that the $20 price point is inhibiting people at the market. I definitely notice a pull back on spending. Since sunflowers will be my focal for the next few weeks, I feel I’ll have more wiggle room to make a bouquet worth $15-20 and sell it at that. I still think flowers are recession proof but a $15 bouquet is more recession proof than a $25 bouquet. Hope this makes sense!

I've noticed $20 seems to be a bit much for people in my area at times. Even though I know I'm putting $20 worth of flowers in my bouquet, if not more. Hopefully things will start picking up for the both of us! I'm new to the flower farming business but jumping in with both feet!

Beautiful bouquets. What is that variegated foliage you used in the bouquet with the yellow lilies? It’s also in one of your „Shorty“ bouquets.

Do you sell any single bunches - eg a bunch of 10 snaps? this is what I'm aiming to try this year. I think people like a bunch of, say, dark red snaps etc etc. Then I'd load a quantity discount on top of that.. Great video Jessie.

I totally want to but haven’t had enough snaps to do that! Some are being overtaken by thrips 😭. That was actually my original plan and I do think it’d do well. I actually had a woman who asked if I could sell a small bucket to her bc she wants to arrange herself. I’m totally open to this and figured snaps could play a big part in this bouquet along some a few focals and other fillers!

@@bareflowerfarm Yes - you notice things on your travels... i've seen many single colour bunches of snaps in peoples houses - they are a very important crop IMHO..!

I like pink, orange and red together with light green greenery. Mixed up with small white flowers. Even yellow. Love blue and yellow. Deep reds with light pink.

I’m new to growing cut flowers. Doesn’t dill have a pickle smell? I grew it last year and the smell was awful. Maybe I had the wrong type but I don’t see why you would use in a bouquet.

Dill definitely has a smell and it’s a smell that not everyone loves. A few farmers will grow dill though it’s less of a popular filler. I had a lot bc had a ton of seed left over from microgreens and grew a bit for our own culinary use and to test for intercropping (deterring pests). I would grow it again but in smaller quantities. My customers loved the dill!

I had to put shade cloth above. I envy, but they are now bloom and much taller. I believe Lisa Mason Ziegler has a podcast conversation with Dave Dowling on snapdragon growing.
