@@RuneDrageon Bridget's original background wasn't like, transphobic, it was kind of progressive at the time... but now its kind of weird and at least phobic-adjacent. The tl;dr is she is a twin born in a weird fucking village with a hyperspecific superstition about two male twins being bad luck, so the village was going to form a mob and fucking murder Baby Bridget, so their parents dressed her like a girl to avoid the mob and she had to live that life or shed be murdered. The character seen in game was a femboy, someone who identified as a man and was male, but also crossdressed feminine due to a necessity. Kind of weird stuff. They corrected people who identified them as female, but used personal pronouns that suggested femininity in Japanese. There was some story elements of the character wanting to prove the superstition as wrong by being their male self. Now, the character just come out as a woman, not a crossdressing man. This really pissed off some people, who are pretty weird. Her entire background is super weird, and seemingly designed to come up with a super-femboy. Fighting games have bizarro backgrounds and irrelevant story and live in a state of weird soft canon anyway, I can't imagine being so upset about this. Personally, Bridget was the first trans-adjacent character I ever saw portrayed as a good and positive person, and that did have an effect on me and is a small part of my trans journey. I think the femboy version fit the time the game came out and trans woman fits them now.
@Bwooke2 жыл бұрын
@@RuneDrageon she used to be a boy dressed/raised publicly as a girl for 'plot reasons' involving her village having a superstitious belief about male twins bringing bad luck. Her parents make this choice to protect her, but are remorseful and apologetic. They regret having to do so, and Bridget never really cared that much. Her story in the first game/expansions she was in involved her becoming a bounty hunter to make something of herself and prove to the village that she's not bad luck so she can be accepted and erase the superstition as well as make her parents less uncomfortable with having raised her like that. She is wildly successful, and brings back a fortune to the village, and they all accept her as a male and the superstition is erased. Fast forward to strive and it's revealed in the time between games she's been unhappy, and leaves her village to go soul searching basically. Her story in the game is one of a trans person finding their identity and making the choice for themselves, rather than letting others or society influence her decision. It's very wholesome and positive. Her design+song+bio+arcade mode dialogue all very much loudly confirm she is trans, but bigots/weebs are upset for a myriad of reasons and spreading weird false info to try and convince people she's not despite her basically saying it directly to the camera. Try shading in grayscale first, then apply color afterwards using a color picker. Assuming you're working digitally. Neutrals with one or two other colors, or traditionally complimentary colors are an easy starting point. Alternately go for warm or cool colors. It can often be hard to find the right colors, but being able to adjust in real time using a slider or wheel makes it way easier.

The most infuriating thing about Vaush's bad media takes is that he often has a point, but more often that not that point is misplaced, and that he is heavily biased without realising it. Like come on, you can't say that the characters from Dennou Coil (a really good show btw, highly recommended) are easily identifiable with distinct traits and then turning around and saying that Madoka characters are only identifiable due to their hair colours. Also I would argue that characters being iconic is less to do with their art, and more to do with their own characters and the show they are from. Like a lot of people know which series the Kill La Kill characters are from, but that is because the show is very well known.

this reminds me of when i got into an argument with someone over the general color direction of jsr vs jsrf. I said that jsrf actually comes off as more vibrant and colorful as opposed to jsr because of the color and tone harmonizing jsrf does throughout the game. Jsr does this too of course, but it has a lot of times where the colors are just basically saturated with no harmonizing tones... and it makes the visuals clash a bit more (best example is the very first look of the tutorial area in jsr). But because they pointed out a screenshot of jsr where there was a lot of just saturated colors with no harmonization as opposed to a softer ambiance of greens and blues in Highway Zero of jsrf, they said i was wrong. Like, im sorry but they just straight up did NOT know what they were talking about so i told them to take a color theory class and bounced.

I actually really didn't appreciate the subtle suggested movement and depth put into Strive Bridget's back leg. That subtle bend in her foot, combined with the shading that sets it apart from the rest of the image, but still is balanced out by the shading on her jacket's right sleeve. You can tell that she's moving forwards, but need only to look at one of either legs to get that impression. Also, that little peek at her boy shorts is a subtle nod to her character, along with a bit of sex appeal. (chef's kiss) Needless to say, Guilty Gear has come a long way in its art design and it is glorious.

I would love to see Vaush go over the chainsaw man trailer.

Do a Guilty Gear Strive stream. I'd pull up, that shit would be amazing. Also, the music is as good audibly as the art work is visually.

Berserk is also an example of great character design. And it doesn’t even use color.
