When you also pretend to be a Conservative, you can get them to reveal a LOT of how they actually feel. I do this with some of my own friends. They are usually just people who go through the same experiences we all do, but process them differently. A lot of men say they are against abortion because life begins at conception. Get them comfortable and they'll say they don't care, they are just enraged women get to sleep around with no consequences. Some even admit it outright. Lots of women too are against abortion. Usually again because of life experiences, where they set rules on themselves not to sleep around, so when they see their friends do it and get away with a couple of pregnancies with no consequences, it creates a deep hatred. It's also why we see a lot of Conservatives being gay in secret. They set the rules on themselves that it's not right, so either keep it inside, or do it in secret, and when they see others freely doing it with no consequences, that's where the hatred comes from. "No I was taught all my life they are supposed to be below everyone! Why don't they have to suffer like me??" Conservatives' issue with the trans community as well. They most likely see a trans person, and their body reacts automatically, either with disgust or lust, or a mix of the 2, and they literally don't know how to deal with it. This one is great to pretend to be a conservative with, because if you ask them for a solution and push them, they'll reveal they ultimately just want all trans people deleted. Same with a lot of Conservatives accusing people of grooming. It's always internal struggles they have to project. They don't want virgins because of some inherent purity. They want virgins because they are usually young enough to groom and brainwash. Growing up in a Conservative household, I was always taught that drugs destroy your life, marijuana, coke, meth are the same etc... So growing up avoiding a lot of it, but seeing friends do drugs and not just face no consequences, but still succeed more than me, I do understand how conservatives feel, but thankfully I broke out of Conservatism in University. Education does help, but you really do also need a lot of introspection.

If they fail to source what they’re saying, bring up a reliable source from Pew Research or other primary or scholarly sources. If they say that source is biased, ask how. Keep pushing them on their beliefs. Eventually they will be backed into a corner. Some of them will just be angry that you’re challenging their beliefs, and the cognitive dissonance will spur their pride to want to be right, and they will hardline. Sometimes, they will think and actually change their mind. This provided that you and the person you are talking to is good faith. Being bad faith (like my parents) will almost certainly cause you to be shut down, or the first outcome I described will happen

V is really good off the cuff, and that’s great for addressing opposing arguments, but if you’re trying to persuade someone, this style is much more likely to breed animosity. I have a conservative friend and I know I've changed his mind on a number of issues but I don't know what exactly caused that. In general I'm skeptical of, well, generalizations that there's only one way (or no way) that people change. I fell deep into the field of conspiracies to the point where I began to think like a typical centrist class reductionists, “both sides should unite and abandon this gender and race theory” kind of guy. What pulled me over from the "liberal" camp to the "left" camp was Legaleagle's video about all of Trump's crimes prior to the election. It was relatively short, to the point, and demonstrated the facts of Trump's crimes without commenting on his voter base all while naturally conveying the urgency of the situation. Additionally, the blasé attitude of my fellow conservative friends regarding this absolute fascist creep into our government solidified my transition. Now this is an incomplete story, because my transition fully started when COVID hit and the abysmal response to the pandemic, followed by the equally abysmal reaction to the 2020 Floyd protests. All of these were the seeds of doubt that started the push from an apolitical lib to a proper lefty. I think that if you're a politically conscious conservative (and have been for the last couple of years) you're well aware of what's going on and don't care/support it. I think the broader issue I see with people is that they're very politically conscious and aware of *their* intersectional issues (real or not) but turn a complete blind eye to everyone else's. Think TERFs, men's rights activists, or Zionists for example. If there's a good way of breaking through that and convincing people to understand, care, and support issues that aren't theirs we could have a real solid push towards the left. EDIT: clarity

I’m surprised that no one talks about this, but there were actually Monarchists at the Jan 6th riot. I have trouble finding it but there is actually a photo of someone carrying a flag of the Union Jack in the corner of a blank red canvas. I recognized this from a Hamilton animatic (yeah I had bad taste a few years back) and realized it was the original British flag for the 13 colonies. No it's older than that. I & a lot of other kids got the pants scared off us at summer camp by a preacher who laid out a scenario almost exactly like the Left Behind series. The American Rescue Plan had nothing to do with paying for lockdowns since most major lockdowns had ended almost 12 months prior to its passage. While working at the election polls as a judge I met two women who were Republicans and they have given up on the party. One was an old lady who said she had been voting Republican since Eisenhower but she would not vote for Trump and the other woman had been watching the hearing that day and said while she knew he behaved poorly hearing it out loud and in detail made her give up on the party and swore of Trump. Yes don't tell them to watch a video. But do use some of the points in the video when talking to them. I've noticed a lot of conservatives just haven't been exposed to criticism or implications of their own ideas. So they need to be exposed to that and introspect and make the connections in their own minds. They might not explicitly tell you they agree or changed their minds (I think most people don't) but their ideas may start to change.

I think we all want a video we can show to our disconnected boomer parents that gets them to start challenging their beliefs a little bit but there's no shot that that video can be half an hour long or use the kind of rhetoric that Vaush does. I have conservative family and I'm from a conservative community. They are incredibly hard to talk to about politics because they immediately go on the defensive if you even suggest they're being misled, sometimes violently. They're in a cult and you can't rationalize a person out of a cult. There was a quote on 30 Rock of all shows that said "Irrational people don't react to logic, they react to fear.". We need to figure out what they are individually afraid of and press those points to show that Republicans are the real source of their fears. Obviously if those things are racist or bigoted it's harder to sell because it requires significant reframing but that's the most practical approach.

As a conservative (usually republican voter) that enjoys Vaush vastly, I have a couple recommendations when speaking to "us". Don't talk about democracy and then immediately undermine it by describing tyranny of majority and describing a constitutional republic, then go on to describe republicans as mass murderers. Side note, I'm an atheist, so the assumption that the person on the right somehow permits manmade global warming because of God's will is far better posed if talking to that group (evangelical Christians). Same thing for the Jan 6 nonsense. That should be posed to Trump supporters. I mean, you think Dick Cheney's daughter needs to hear this? She's head of the Jan 6th committee! Despite my stances, I can see some reasonable arguments in favour of capitalism in some forms, but I cannot fathom any reason why someone without faith as a cornerstone of his or her ideology would be socially conservative. I'm all for worker co-ops, particularly because many don't care for "waterfall" type hierarchy. I think so long as government incentives exist, we should use them to help grow co-ops. That said, I would want those to be localized decisions based on the region, economic situation, cost of living, etc. and not top down, eh, like "waterfall" project management. Edit: Oh, and climate change is just a matter if what impacts it will have and, again, what role the government should play. I can't say for sure what I agree with or disagree with Vaush in that regard because he seems to just be upset about those that don't think it exists and tends not to go much further. Even his reparations argument literally is structural and not handing out money from, let's say, whites to blacks, so I think there is a lot of discussion to be had there.

So good question. I'd say I'm fiscally conservative mostly but you'd have to ask a specific question about LGBT stuff to see how socially conservative I'd go. That said, I definitely have no moral issue with it. So I fall under almost exactly Vaush's description of his beliefs: do what you please as long as it doesn't hurt others and I gather my preferences based upon axioms from experiences, knowledge, empathy, and what I call natural law (although that term is highjacked a lot).

I’ve tended to notice that conservatives lack the ability to care or understand anything that doesn’t directly affect them or the people in their lives. Basically they have little to no empathy for “others”. Instead they try use view all issues from a self centered point if view, aka “personal responsibility, pick yourself up by the bootstrap”, as if everyone is born with same opportunities and circumstances in life. Lastly, aside from romanticizing the past( where most of them would be nothing more serfs working for an overlord), they love simplifying complex societal problems that they end up ignoring current challenges. As a result, these challenges end blowing up in their face, which is why they tend to do substantial harm when given power.

Regarding the part of being oblivious to the consequences of what they support, i.e.: labeling all LGBTQI+ people as groomers, and such, I think a strong factor is just the in group bias. "I believe what others in my group believe, and I rather delusion myself out acknowledging the logical conclusions of those paths of thoughts, than to question the in group line and make myself an outcast of my social group". It's a normal human response that we see in all political leanings. Yeah.... This won't be effective against most conservatives who aren't already questioning, and even then it may relapse them because of how prepped they are to block this sort of talk out. The best way to chip away and get concessions is by arguing emotionally. Conspiracy is used to destract them but we can try to use it at least to make economic arguments, after all they hate big and generally also dislike the 1% as "part of the new world order". Funny thing is that leftist policies weaken them. If they are outdoorsman point out the larger mosqueto season, up north shorter winters for less ice fishing, show how these valued experiences are dieing. No matter how you do it it gets that worm of "do I trust my party". It got me out, and it gets others to faulter.

I kept wondering why Trump is still alive. 1. He keeps talking about getting rid of democracy 2. He gives public speeches 3. Almost everyone in USA has guns 4. Conservatives keep saying that their guns are to defend the first ammendment. So, I eventually realized that they don't actually want to use their guns to defend freedom, but actually racism and other bigoted beliefs. So, we should absolutely take their guns away.

Honestly I think the liechtensteinian system is the best. It is both extremely democratic as well as autocratic but even though the prince has almost absolute power there are many checks ensuring he cannot abuse his power. A veto can be called at all times to abolish the monarchy as well as every single village can vote to secede at all times. The prince has only once vetoed a referendum and that was a hunting law that he considered to have long time lasting negative effects on the local environment. The system is setup in a way that the prince can act quickly to deal with the inefficiencies and power abuses that democracy can cause, but if he abuses his power he can be easily be set aside by the people. Also the way they do direct democracy is extremely efficient and transparent.

Vaush makes a really good point about conservatives forfeiting the right to have their minds changed. If we want to save lives and push our legislation, we can't do that by pursuading people of our positions, because there is no pursuading people. We have to step past conservatives, rather than fight against them.

@@Eibarwoman while I find that a moderately compelling point, plenty of people move from left to right and vise versa, some even a few times, plus there are always new people just learning things. Also for it to be more compelling you would have to show that all efforts had been exhausted without change, leading to the current state (or that it would be reasonable to assume most of the best ones had been). My take is that the real scandal is that people want to play team sports with politics so that they aren't as convinced as they could be if both sides could bring to heel their most cynical pundits, leaders, and propagandists. People kinda like somebody to punish because of the catharsis of vindication, to the point that they might push an annoying enemy further away from agreement subconsciously and still rationalize to themselves that they were being good faith and as persuasive as possible. On top of that politicians from almost any time in history foment division to try and differentiate themselves to engratiate votes and consolidate power which means they look to propogandize people away from anyone else that might challenge that, which leads to people digging in further than they would do so under more amicable conditions. Many have been narcissistic and are always looking to couch thier self interest as a kind of messianic imperative. Conservatives aren't people, neither are leftists, these are positions within politics that can never be vacated properly; they are hyper-objects or metaphysical realities that are defined by contextuality to a bunch of factors, not the least each other. Vaush 100 years ago would probably have had conservative views by today's standards in at least a few areas, and he has some positions today that will probably seem conservative in another 100. It isn't as if socialism is progressive enough for some leftists, or communism, or anarchism (look at revolutionary Russia, lenin, trotsky, stalin). This is because there is no definitive philosophical forward to all people in all times, (or backward for that matter) which is why democracy seems like the plan that shares best the goods of human dignity equally (namely the right to philosophical self determination and expression). There is no pipe dream state where everyone gets what they want in this universe. My dad recently voted for a Democrat for governor, a first for him I think. This was a man who listened to Prager and Savage for years - it's not definitive proof, but it gives me more than reasonable doubt in the premise that it doesn't happen. I also debated at colleges and worked for the GOP (technically i worked for the people of the district in an legislator's office, I also tried to work for a DNC controlled executive office, but the guy doing the interview wanted to be petty rather than honest, because of his prejudices) now I've always been some species of libertarian - so I don't think that should surprise you ... but if you knew my dad your head might spin a bit.

I see a lot of people saying that this video is too aggressive and too insulting to conservatives to really move them over, and while yes just *showing* them the video probably does nothing, being aggressive *is* how you change these people. In my humble experience on this hell world, I have never once seen anyone being moved from the right by people who were kind and supportive to them. Not even once. The way you push these people over is to let them know that they *won't get away with it* . Being nice to them just reinforces their feeling that their beliefs are normal and sane and worthy of respect. Don't do this. My personal experiences are with my family and with a particular group of friends I have. With my family, since the main breadwinner is my mother and she is super supportive, I have the privilege of being able to actually follow through with a "I won't talk to you anymore if..." and wow that is effective. The way I moved over a lot of them was by doing exactly that - get visibly disgusted at their ideas, and then break contact. It is effective because it exploits one of the conservatives' biggest fears, the fear of not being in the in-group anymore, that they *aren't normal* . This is why they insist they are a silent majority, by the way. And with that group of friends, it was mostly the same. If you argue politics with them it will come a point in which a question will come from them, more or less in the way of "are you really letting politics get in the way of our friendship" and the answer for me is, *yes* . It is deeply unsettling to be at the receiving end of that reply, because again, ot destroys the illusion that the hatred they promote is something that can exist on a separate sphere than their private life and that is, again, not the norm. They will never change immediately - they may go away, and they may even never come back even *after* they have changed for the better, but, if you are like me - a combination of being easy to make friends with and not really needing that many - you can say it's worth to lose them to save their souls, so to speak. And speaking of souls: insulting and belittling someone's religion *is* a good way to move them over! Why? Because most people, *fanatics included* , are deeply insecure about their beliefs. If, for example, you have a cousin that is very pro life, and also very religious and those two things are linked, I suggest you try to dismantle their beliefs at every point the pro life thing comes up. If they say life begins at conception, for example, try one of these: get them to point at the bible, if they can, and then start talking about all the inconsistencies and contradictions of their faith and all the things that were eventually proven wrong, even if they are not related. Especially exploitable are their beliefs on an afterlife, because they are often the beliefs one feels most insecure about. You can learn how to systematically destroy one's faith really easily online or on books, it's not that hard there are like 5 arguments, and then it is a matter of showing them that you know what emotions drive them to these beliefs in the first place. Over time, the choice between confronting what their life would be without the emotional support of their faith and simply dropping the pro life shit will do wonders in tipping them over. And when they change their behaviours, even just around you, you're halfway there: changing their behaviour is the first step in changing their mind, and you just showed to an authoritarian that you have power over them, so, yeah.

Because I don't think I have ever encountered one that was pro life and nonreligious outside of doctors who don't perform in public but do so in private clinics, which is sadly allowed where I live. There is really no reason to be one outside of political or monetary gain as specified above, social pressure, religious psychosis or a mixture of all three and a little bit of retardation on the side to make it all work. Yeah the video was about friends and family, of course you would think they would have an attachment to you. But if anything making quite the spectacle of the fact that you are cutting ties with anyone can prove quite unsettling even if they were just a coworker or something. I did not really have the means of trying that. Anyway even excluding friends and family I think the aggressive strategy works best with authoritarians like anti choicers since they need so much the reassurance that they are the norm and the majority so much. There was a book explaining this in detail but now I don't remember the name so well. The authoritarians? Maybe? Something like that. I'll find you the title if you are interested
