Mt Sherman is widely known as one of the easiest 14ers in Colorado. I decided to spice up my third trip up to its summit by adding 13er and centennial Dyer Mountain as well. The hike was about 8.5 miles of hiking with 3,300ft of elevation gain. This is a class 2, dog friendly hike. This was filmed in November.

Summit these on a full moon clear night and look down on Leadville or to the east to Fairplay and the park . This is a good start for your first 24 er if you are not use to altitude etc .

Hiked Mt. SHERMAN from the west Iowa Gulch, short, steeper, fun. Trail was not though what Sherpa pointed out. That was just old dead end mining road traversing the western slope. The trail is well defined, crossing the valley and steady climb to the saddle between Sherman and Sheridan. Nice video!

One of the easiest I’ve done. Good for a first timer. When I summited, I had some of the worst wind I’ve experienced, but once I was back off the ridge it was fine.

Dyer Peak is named for "Father" Dyer, an itinerant preacher and mail carrier back in the good old days of mining in the area. He used skis in winter to navigate his circuit between Breckenridge, Alma and Leadville. There's a memorial to him atop Mosquito Pass. There's also a Father Dyer Peak a ridge or two north of Quandary Peak. Quite a guy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lewis_Dyer

The drive up to the 12,000 ft parking is a nightmare. This guy downplayed it big time. I can’t believe we made it up and back down without getting a flat tire in our Outlander. Some girls we passed by on the way back down were not so lucky. Your tires will be all over large loose rocks with dips, all the way up and down. Driving on the moon would be safer, as I needed a chiropractic adjustment afterwards. Avoid this one at all costs, unless it is an absolute MUST to complete. It’s not worth your vehicle wear and tear. You have been warned.

"This guy" has driven to this TH multiple times and feels as though he described it accurately based on the conditions that day. "This guy" has also seen hundreds of forest roads, here in CO and this one is, regardless of its current condition, is a cupcake compared to many others in the state. Hope insurance covered your chiropractor!

@@TheVirtualsherpa Yeah, OK John Wayne. Look, It’s a horrible path anyway you spin it, regardless of your past experiences on other Forrest paths. Your opinion does not change my experience, nor the opinions of possible unprepared travelers who (God forbid) may take a sedan up the mountain, like the sedan we saw broke down. It’s a rough ride of large sharp rocks all the way up and down, and to put it any other way, is simply disingenuous and misleading. I did however enjoy the old abandoned mining shacks. Still though, I’d love to know the number of breakdowns heading up to the parking area. Hell, I still have a video I made on my phone going up. I may just upload it and paste the link, and travelers can decide for themselves. For anyone who thinks I’m full of it, run a Malibu or an Elantra up there. Hope you don’t mind a little undercarriage damage.

I really enjoy your videos. I have watched a bunch of them. Very well done. I used this one last fall when I was looking for a way to hike Sherman and still obey the "3K rule". Although Sherman is so-so for me, I really like that region. 2 weeks later I did Sherman again but this time climbed Sheridan, Peerless and Horseshoe. I especially like the 13ers in that area. I also enjoy your New England connection. I lived in New England for 30+ years (lived in Colorado for ~3.5 years now). Did the New Hampshire 4K's, Adirondack 46, and I lost count of how many times I hiked Mt Mansfield and Camel's Hump. Keep up the good work, I love drone footage, but hate encountering them in the backcountry (it's only been a couple of times in all my years of hiking). You do a good job with the trade offs there and seem to be conscientious of any impacts. Cheers.

Looking good up there. Hoping to do the class 3-4 route up Dyer Mtn. later this summer, then hike backward on your route to Sherman, Sheridan, then down to the car again (Iowa gulch side). This is such a great hiking area. Love your videos/website, keep it up.

Those humps are Gemini, the unranked 13er. The one you didn't ascend is slightly higher, I think. It breaks my heart that you were that close and didn't add that to your day. Edit: oh, you explained all of that later in the video. You've probably already bagged it anyway.

Great vid again! My bro and I are from PA and heading to CO in Sept to tackle some 14ers. We’ve done Quandry twice and it was rough as we were at 600 feet in Pennsylvania a few days prior. Any advice on how to train for a 14er being from PA? I do a lot of uphill running up the small mountains around here and hiking uphill with a heavy weight vest. Any other tips?
@TheVirtualsherpa
@TheVirtualsherpa 3 жыл бұрын
Wish I had a better answer but everything you are doing sounds good. Really no way to train for elevation besides being in it. Maybe try a day or two at 9/10k before and that might help make your hike a bit easier elevation wise.
