Welcome back to another Hiking in Colorado 14er adventure! On June 21st, 2020, my friend Joel and I made our way out to the Sawatch Range to hike two 14ers: the West Ridge of Tabeguache Peak and Mount Shavano from the Jennings Creek Trailhead. This is the nonstandard route for those of you who are looking for a different, less frequented approach than the standard route up Shavano.

This video showcases our trip up the West Ridge of Tabeguache Peak and neighboring Mt. Shavano. The route begins from the Jennings Creek Trailhead and is slightly shorter with less elevation gain than the standard route up the East Slopes of Mt. Shavano. This was a great way to get my #45 and #46 fourteeners!

Have any of you tried this alternate route up Tabeguache? Let me know below!

I haven't personally done it, but I've looked at it as an alternative to the standard Shavano trail as that one gets so crowded. Worth it to you to take this route over the standard one?

It was definitely worth it! We only saw three people until we got to the summit of Tabeguache. Plus you get to make your way up a beautiful basin. Definitely recommend it!

Did you do this on a weekend or weekday? I'm just curious as to just how crowded these summits were. I'm trying to plan this weekend's trip, but crowds will probably keep me below 14k'. I have avoided 14ers during the main climbing season for years, but this year is...special.

I did 14ers in the 90s, early 00s. I found it was better to do them after about August 15 (tourists mostly gone) and best to do after Labor Day ( college kids, last of summer hikers gone). Was curious what it was like nowadays. Haven't been up there in years.

@@OspreyFlyer You're mostly right about the end of summer tourists, but I think there's a steady tourist presence through the fall now just judging by the northbound Sunday afternoon traffic on 285. It can backup miles south of Fairplay even into September. And, it's not uncommon to share the summit of a Sawatch 14er with 40-50 others these days. I've lived here for 14 years and I have witnessed a balloon of mountain traffic in that relatively short time.

@@habaceeba I remember Friday and Sunday nights were heavy traffic in summer (including 285) with the weekend Front Range crowd. Don't remember backed up traffic! On weekdays later in the season, there weren't many on the trail. I tried to go less popular routes, not the main routes. Thanks for the info.
